Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the Roman goddess of the dawn, who shares a name with a Disney animated princess?

Answer: Aurora

This name was shared by the princess in Disney's "Sleeping Beauty". Ovid described this goddess as being forever young. Vesta, Minerva, and Juno are all other goddesses of the Romans.
2. Who was worshiped in ancient Egypt as the god of architecture and the sciences?

Answer: Imhotep

Imhotep (aka Imhetep) was once a man who became deified after his death. In life he was a vizier, physician, astronomer, and most of all an architect. He designed the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, and his work led to the Pyramids of Giza several generations later. His cult even spread to Greece. Horus, Osiris, and Anubis are other Egyptian gods.
3. In Greek mythology, what goddess with a floral-sounding name personified the rainbow, and was also a messenger of the gods?

Answer: Iris

Hermes was also a messenger, but he was a god, not a goddess. Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love and beauty, and Clio was the Muse of history.
4. Which of these was the Norse god who was the only one brave enough to put his hand into the mouth of the giant wolf Fenrir?

Answer: Tyr

Tyr was a warrior god, and it was only because he volunteered to put his hand into the mouth of Fenrir that the giant wolf could be bound. Tyr lost his hand when Fenrir closed his massive jaws upon it. Odin is the All-father of the Norse pantheon, Thor is the mightiest of Odin's sons, and Loki is the trickster god.
5. This Celtic goddess was the deity of horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules, as well as being a fertility goddess, and was the only Celtic deity also worshiped by the Romans. Name her.

Answer: Epona

Epona and her horses might also have carried souls into the afterlife. Brigid is also a Celtic goddess, but Dagda and Lugh are both male Celtic deities.
6. Which Roman deity was the god of shepherds and the protector of sheep, cattle, and livestock in general?

Answer: Lupercus

Lupercus, aka Faunus or Faustulus, was the protector of shepherds and livestock, which seems strange in view of the fact that his name derives from "lupus", meaning "wolf". His feast, the Lupercalia, was on February 15th. Jupiter was the leader of the Roman gods, and Romulus and Remus were the legendary brothers who founded Rome.
7. What was the name of the Norse god who demanded of Odin that the latter sacrifice an eye in exchange for one drink from his well of knowledge?

Answer: Mimir

Mimir gave counsel to the gods, and eventually was decapitated by the Vanir. Odin took his head, embalmed and bewitched it, and thus was still able to receive advice from Mimir when he wished it. Frigg was a goddess, wife of Odin. Balder was the most beautiful of the Norse gods, and Hoder was the god who unintentionally killed him with mistletoe.
8. Who was the Aztec goddess responsible for earth, fertility, and the dead?

Answer: Itzpapalotl

Aztecs believed that the souls of the dead sometimes manifested themselves as butterflies, and the name Itzpapalotl translates as "obsidian butterfly". Changing Woman is a Navajo goddess. Raven and Coyote are trickster deities in the mythology of many Native American tribes.
9. Who was the ancient Greek goddess of Victory? (Hint: check your sneakers.)

Answer: Nike

The most famous representation of Nike is the now-headless statue "Winged Victory of Samothrace," on display in the Louvre. Hera, Athena, and Artemis are all major Greek goddesses.
10. Who was the Irish triple goddess of fate, battle, and death?

Answer: The Morrigan

The Morrigan can be either three goddesses or one, or three-in-one. The Morrigan foretold life and death, especially as pertained to battle, and often took the form of an old woman or a raven. The Norns and the Fates were triple goddesses fulfilling similar roles in the Norse and the Greek pantheons respectively, and the Valkyries were the beautiful female deities who took the souls of brave Norse warriors to Odin's hall.
