Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You're standing on the ground, but you're about to go up in the sky. What word is defined as moving in the direction of the sky?

Answer: skyward

Skyward is defined as something going toward the sky, such as when it is soaring or towering. If you were launched like a rocket, you would be going skyward. This is what astronauts do - they go skyward in their spacecraft in order to reach space. Airplanes go skyward after takeoff, and the poles point skyward.

A notable title that contains the word 'skyward' in it is the video game "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword" I played.
2. What word means to rapidly go up, like the fireworks that were launched to the sky?

Answer: skyrocket

A skyrocket is a firework that explodes into the sky, going off in a spectacular and colorful display. It is also defined as a time when the quantities or rates suddenly go way up fast; this applies to anything that goes way up rapidly and drastically. Food shortages would cause prices to skyrocket.

Going outside of the above mentioned definitions, a skyrocket is a plant called scarlet gilia that is native to western North America and blooms red, trumpet-shaped flowers.
3. You're about to jump off the airplane while in mid-flight. What is this action called?

Answer: skydiving

Skydiving is synonymous with skyjumping, even though diving is not synonymous with jumping. Skydiving is the process in which people jump out of airplane while in mid-flight, at least several thousand feet in the air, and parachute to the ground. During this time they free fall and use their body to direct where they want to go. Skydiving is commonly done for recreational purpose and it is unsurprisingly dangerous.

Many of the skydiving casualties occur when either the parachute was opened too late or failed to deploy.
4. What word means to perform acrobatics with a board while in free fall after jumping off the airplane?

Answer: skysurf

If you skysurf while skydiving it would earn you extra points! Skysurfing is a form of exercise done during free fall in which a board is worn on the feet. Mid-air aerobatics can be performed as if surfing on water. Skysurfing can be pretty exciting as you would rotate the view in every angle, seeing the sky below your feet and the ground above your head! The history of skysurfing only goes back to 1965, when Gary Patmor was the first person to skysurf.

Skytrick and skyfly are two of my made-up words used as incorrect choices. Skyfall means a sudden downfall, such as the downfall of emotion from the death of a loved one, according to the "Urban Dictionary".
5. You successfully opened the parachute and landed gently on the ground; then you look up to see the trail of colored smoke coming out of the plane going in a tracing patterns for forming letters and words in the sky. What is this odd process called?

Answer: skywriting

Skywriting is performed by a small plane flying in a horizontal and vertical pattern that traces out letters, numbers, or other symbols using a special smoke emitted from the tail cone. Skywriting is essentially writing on the sky as if it was a paper, using the plane as a pen, and smoke as an ink! Writing words in the sky is used for advertisement as well as to make viewers feel entertained and impressed. Skywriting would be quite a feat! Skywriting is very expensive, costing at least $3500, according to an article published by "Sky-Writing.com Aerial Advertising".

Skywriting was first accomplished to 1919 in Britain and was commercialized in the United States in 1932. Skytyping is a form of skywriting which uses puffs of smoke emitted from planes flying in formation to make dot matrices. Skytyping was first accomplished in 1946.

Skydrawing is a shooting technique used in archery. There are no such words as skytracing and skyscripting.
6. What word means the outline of a city with tall buildings appearing on the horizon?

Answer: skyline

The skyline of the city is especially seen from a far distance, so that it appears on the horizon. A skyline can also be the boundary line between the earth and sky, or the horizon itself. As a verb, skyline means to make an outline of something against the sky, according "Dictionary.com".
7. There are buildings so tall with so many stories that the rooftops are literally located in the sky. What is the word that means a tall building, one that is commonly found in big cities?

Answer: skyscraper

Skyscrapers are so-called because the buildings are so tall that they seem to scrape the sky. I live near Chicago, which has plenty of skyscrapers, such as Willis Tower and John Hancock Center. The Willis Tower is the second tallest skyscraper in the U.S. after One World Trade Center in New York.

The tallest skyscraper in the world is Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which measures more than half a mile in height and is twice the height of Willis Tower. A skyscraper is currently defined as building that are at least 100 meters or 330 feet tall; the original definition, which followed the invention of the word in the 1880s, called for a building having at least 10 stories.
8. All of the following terms refer to the indoor connection between buildings that are high above the ground EXCEPT for which one?

Answer: skypath

A skyway, skybridge or skywalk is a walkway above the streets that connects adjacent buildings so people can walk from one building to another without going outside and crossing the busy street. Like skyscrapers, skyways are more common in big cities.
9. What do we call a porter that checks in passengers and their luggage at the airport?

Answer: skycap

Skycaps are tipped porters who carry out many duties at airports, such as cleaning and maintaining cabins, and helping elderly and disabled passengers, in addition to the two duties mentioned in the question.

Railway porters are called redcaps because they wear red hats. Airline porters are called skycaps, which is taken from redcaps etymologically, with the 'sky' prefix nothing that they aid the passengers before they go up in the sky.

A skycheck is what a skycap does, which is the act of checking customers' belongings before they get on the airplane. Skyer means a batted ball that goes way up in the sky, and Skyman is a DC Comics Universe superhero.
10. What is the stealing of an aircraft called?

Answer: skyjacking

Skyjacking is the hijacking of an aircraft. A skyjacking is performed by forcing pilots and co-pilots to follow the orders of skyjackers, such as having them to fly off the desired path or forcing them to get off the controls for skyjackers to take over either by voice, threat, or attack. Skyjackers would typically have passengers to take hostage so they don't have to worry about someone fighting back and retaking control of the plane.

The most infamous cases of skyjacking happened on September 11, 2001, when terrorists skyjacked four airplanes and piloted them into intentional crashes; two of them crashed into the former World Trade Center in New York City, which, at the time, was the tallest skyscraper in the U.S.
11. What is the name of the gizmo that attaches a rope to a rock face?

Answer: skyhook

A skyhook is a hook attached to a rope that is used to secure it firmly to the rock crevice in order to support the weight of the climbers. It is the most important piece of equipment used in rock climbing. A skyhook is also a rope with a hook that can lift heavy objects using a helicopter or a crane.

A skyhook throw is performed by getting the hand with a ball to be thrown furthest away from the body then turn the arm up and release the ball above the head, resulting in the hook-shaped throw where the ball goes up into the sky momentarily. It is especially used in basketball, where one uses a hand on the other side of the body from an opponent that is trying to block a shot. I sometimes do a skyhook when playing basketball in my swimming pool!
12. What is an informal term for a paratrooper who jumps off the airplane?

Answer: skyman

Skymen are trained to jump off the airplane and parachute down to the battlefield. Because of this tactic, skymen can be used to invade enemy territory that would otherwise be blocked from land access due to fortifications and as for defense to protect their territory. Skymen were first used during World War II.

Skyman is also a slang word for God because God can be thought of as a human-like spiritual being that descends from the sky, according to the "Urban Dictionary".
13. Which of the following is the luxurious seating area that is typically located near the top of the stadium stands?

Answer: skybox

A skybox is a box-shaped luxury area enclosed by a roof and windows. It is usually the highest seating area of the stadium where spectators would literally be watching the sporting contest from the indoors. Inside the skybox, there is a lounge area, restaurants and bars. Tickets to skybox seats are typically very pricey.
14. What is the window on the roof or ceiling called?

Answer: skylight

Yes it's called a skylight, or fanlight if you prefer. The word suggests that it is in the sky on the ceiling, providing light shone from the sky like the artificial light panels installed on the ceilings. I don't have a skylight in my home, but it would be cool to have one.
15. What bird, common in Europe, North Africa, and Asia, can sing while flying?

Answer: skylark

These passerine or perching birds are members of the genus "Alauda". Skylarks are naturally found in Europe, Asia, and the mountains of North Africa, but they have been introduced to other areas, such as the Americas and Australia.

There is also a verb definition of skylark, which means being energetically playful or participating in tomfooleries or shenanigans, according to the "Urban Dictionary".
