Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There seems to be one dancer that is leading all of the others. You hear some claves and congas in the band, and everyone starts to move! They are mostly moving their feet enthusiastically to a very distinct rhythm. What is this dance called?

Answer: Salsa

There are many versions of the salsa, and the salsa itself is a bit of a hodgepodge of several other Latin American dances including the Cumbia, Merengue, and Bomba dances. All versions of the salsa tend to rely heavily on footwork and turning, though there is upper body movement as well.
2. The dancers are very close to each other. They are in pairs, with one dancer acting as leader and the other one acting as follower. The dancers perform a lot of twists and turns as they dance to catchy, fast-paced music. What dance are you watching?

Answer: Bal Swing

There are two main types of the Balboa. Pure Balboa involves very close contact between two dancers, and that contact cannot be broken. Because of this, Balboa was always known as a more reserved dance. Bal Swing is a more recent form of Balboa that allows dancers to move around more freely, involving lots of twists and turns and, of course, swings!
3. Women dressed in brightly colored, silk costumes begin to dance to the music of the barrel drum, flute, and sitar among other instruments. There seem to be five different dances, some that are accompanies by lyrics and some that tell stories of heroes or love. The performance ends with a final dance full of freedom and spirituality. What dance was just performed?

Answer: Odissi

The Odissi is an Indian classical dance, and it consists of the three main dances common to all classical dances of India, as well as an opening and a closing. The dance starts with a song to praise the gods, and moves on to a dance generally focused on movement.

The next two dances tell a story of some kind (mythology or poetry is common) and the closing dance is once again focused more on the movement (¨pure dance¨).
4. Everyone is wearing flashy clothing in a large room with flashing lights. The music is catchy and uses a lot of string instruments. You recognize an electric guitar and some specific dance moves, such as the Travolta, the Retro Hustle, and the Butterfly. Some moves, however, also seem to be improvised to the music. What dance is going on?

Answer: Disco

Disco, as you might imagine, has a very long history. It is definitely one of the more well-known dances out there. First introduced in the 1960s, disco music was very popular in the 1970s but lost some of that popularity in the next decade. Now, disco music is not quite the fad that it used to be, though it certainly remains well-known and, to some, dear.
5. Four couples are gathered outside, and when the music starts they begin to dance together. There is one person who is calling out dance sequences for the dancers to perform. Since this is the traditional version of the dance, you can see that the dance sequences being called out seem to go in a repeating pattern. What dance are you watching?

Answer: Square Dance

The square dance is often seen as an icon of early America, though it is performed in other parts of the world, such as Ireland and England. There is more than one version of the square dance, but most versions include a ´caller´ who calls out sequences for the dancers. In some versions, however, the dancers are expected to know the sequences and there is no caller.
6. The music starts, and the dancers begin to move their hips. They seem to be moving along with the beat, and they move their hips and torso in a graceful fashion. Along with the occasional arm movement and spin, they are focused on their hips, which move along to the music. What dance is this?

Answer: Belly Dance

The belly dance is characterized by its abdominal and hip movements. There is often some arm movement as well, but usually this arm movement merely serves to accentuate the hips and the abdomen. While the belly dance traces back to the Middle East, it is now seen in other parts of the world including North America, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
7. Everyone is crowded around a few dancers dressed in casual clothes. As some kind of hip-hop music starts playing, the dancers begin to move. Their movement is strong and fast, and they are all over the place. They seem to spend as much time moving around on the floor as they do upright. You wonder if what they are doing is physically possible. What dance are you watching?

Answer: B-boying

B-boying is more commonly known as breakdancing. The original term for the dance was b-boying or breaking, but as the dance became more popular the term breakdancing was used. Either way, the dance involves strong muscles and coordination, often including feats that to the average person seem physically impossible.
8. In this classical version of the dance, the dancers are on a stage and classical music begins to play. The dancers perform choreographed movements, and you watch them leap and twirl in awe. Their movements are telling a story of some kind. What dance are they performing?

Answer: Ballet

Ballet has a considerably long history, and ballet performances of stories such as ¨Sleeping Beauty¨ and ¨Swan Lake¨ are well known. Now there are many different types of ballet. Classical ballet usually tells a story, while neoclassical ballet is generally more abstract. Contemporary ballet is a more modern style of ballet and tends to have a less rigid form.
9. Rock music is playing, and the dancers begin to jump around enthusiastically. Some of them are in a very stiff position, with arms pressed firmly against their sides and legs together. Others move their arms and legs wildly with the beat. There doesn´t seem to be any set dance move or structure here. What dance is going on?

Answer: Pogo

Pogo dancing is perhaps easily recognizable due to its name. Like a pogo stick, the general idea is to jump around. There are really no strict ´rules´ other than that, and it is generally done during a concert or musical performance. Pogo dancing is not to be confused with moshing, where dancers purposefully collide and run into each other.
10. As the dancers begin performing the more rhythmical version of their dance, you notice their shiny black shoes. There is no music in this dance; instead the dancers begin right away. Through fancy footwork and coordination, they create a beat all by themselves. What dance are they performing?

Answer: Tap Dance

There are two main versions of the tap dance, both of which involve tapping the feet in different patterns and rhythms. In the earlier version, there is often no music and little arm movement involved. However, in the more showy versions, there can be music and lots of arm movement. The latter version of tap dancing tends to be more popular nowadays.
