Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Operated on Louisa Mary Cleese while drunk. Got swallowed by a red herring.

Answer: Edward George Armstrong

Dr. Armstrong was a bad alcoholic who operated and accidentally killed Louisa Mary Cleese because he was drunk at the time. He claims to the other guests that she died because the surgery was risky. His "crime" haunts him, as shown when he sometimes dreams about the situation.

He dies after Justice Wargrave tricks him into faking the judge's death, that being the red herring of the poem.
2. Withheld medication from Jennifer Brady. Of the servant class.

Answer: Mr. & Mrs. Rogers

Thomas and Ethel Rogers killed their former employer, Miss Brady, by withholding lifesaving medication. They claimed they tried to save her, but the weather was too bad and they did not make it back with the medication in time. It is suggested that Mr. Rogers was the mastermind behind this and he forced his wife to go along with it. In the 2015 BBC adaptation, Mr. Rogers smothered Miss Brady with a pillow.

Ethel Rogers is killed when she takes poisoned sleeping medication Wargrave slips into her drink after the gramophone reading. In the adaptation, it is implied he poisoned her in the middle of the night, after she had gone to bed. Mr. Rogers is whacked with an ax, an easy task since his role as a servant isolates him from everyone else. In the adaptation he is disemboweled quite gruesomely and bloodily, and in the video game, Rogers is literally "chopped in half" as the poem states.
3. Perjured himself, which led to the innocent James Landor being sent to prison. Hugged by a bear.

Answer: William Henry Blore

Blore was a former police officer who took a bribe and sent an innocent man to prison. The man later died without being cleared. Although the novel does not go into detail, it is implied that Blore was released from his duties as a result of this. In the 2015 adaptation, Blore physically assaulted Landor, a gay man, in his prison cell and claimed Landor fell down the stairs.

He is killed when a marble clock shaped like a bear falls on him. In the adaptation, he is stabbed and thrown under the bearskin rug.
4. Responsible for the drowning of Cyril Hamilton. Severely affected by the poem.

Answer: Vera Claythorne

Vera was the governess to Cyril Hamilton, a young heir. However, she fell in love with Cyril's uncle Hugo. Vera told Cyril to swim out to the rocks, which was far enough out that she knew he could not complete the swim and would drown. She did this so Hugo would become the heir. Hugo was devastated and left Vera, even though an inquest found her innocent, and the rest of the family believed so as well.

Vera is deeply effected by her guilt and the "Ten Little Soldiers" poem. She steadily loses her mind as time progresses. She is the last believed to be alive and hangs herself at the end of the novel, believing that is what Hugo wants. In the 2015 adaptation, she attempts to hang herself Wargrave walks into the room, causing her to knock the chair over but giving her enough leverage not to swing. She begs Wargrave to let her go and they will blame Lombard but Wargrave kicks the chair away.
5. Killed 21 members of an East African Tribe. Got frizzled up.

Answer: Philip Lombard

Lombard is the least remorseful of the ten soldiers. He claims he killed the tribesman as a matter of self-preservation, as he was lost in Africa and starving. He never thinks about the situation in the novel other than telling the guests about it the first night. In the 2015 adaptation, he is even more brutal as he admits he killed the men for diamonds they had and also says there were many others.

Although he is youngish, his old school style of thinking was his downfall. He believed women were weak and incapable of killing. Vera shoots him when they believe they are the last two remaining. Lombard is the first (if not the only) soldier who suspects Wargrave as the killer.
6. Sent Arthur Richmond on a deadly mission he would not survive. Widower of Leslie.

Answer: John Gordon Macarthur

Sometimes General Macarthur is renamed something else to avoid confusion with General Douglas Macarthur. Christie's Macarthur discovered that one of his officers, Arthur Richmond, was having an affair with his wife Leslie, whom the general loved more than anything. He sent Richmond on a dangerous and useless mission he knew the officer would not survive. In the 2015 adaptation, Macarthur shot Richmond in the back of the head but it is not explained how he covered it up.

Macarthur is the first to realize what is going on on Soldier Island, and is ready to meet his fate as his guilt is getting the better of him. He is bludgeoned to death. His death is symbolic and serves as the turning point in the novel. Prior to this, the other guests thought the two previous murders were accidents. However, the general's death makes it impossible for them to deny a murderer is on the loose.
7. Ran over John and Lucy Combes. Chokes.

Answer: Anthony Marston

Anthony Marston is portrayed as a vain and self-centered young man who has no remorse for the two small children he ran over while driving recklessly. He did not instantly recognize their names, and when he did, claimed it was a nuisance that he had his license suspended as a result.

He is the first soldier to die on Soldier Island and dies via poison in his drink almost immediately after the gramophone record plays. The other guests suspect Marston either committed suicide because of guilt after hearing his crime on the gramophone or died due to some kind of accident.
8. Led Beatrice Taylor to commit suicide. Extremely religious.

Answer: Emily Brent

Miss Brent is an elderly spinster woman known for her religiousness and often delivers fire and brimstone type remarks. She fired an unmarried and pregnant maid of hers named Beatrice Taylor. Beatrice had sought out help from Miss Brent, who denied her because of her sins. Beatrice threw herself off a cliff and committed suicide as a result. In the 2015 adaptation, Beatrice threw herself in front of a train. It is implied that Miss Brent suffered some kind of social backlash because of her decision.

She dies when she is injected with poison to make it look like a bee sting. In the adaptation, she dies when she is stabbed with her knitting needles.
9. Got a woman addicted to drugs that later killed her. Gramophone voice.

Answer: Isaac Morris

Isaac Morris, although never appearing in the novel and never making it to the island, is technically Wargrave's first victim. Morris was responsible for the death of the daughter of one of Wargrave's friends, whom Morris got addicted to drugs. Wargrave tricks him into recording the gramophone and buying the island before killing him and setting out for Soldier Island.
10. Sentenced potentially innocent Edward Seton to death. Alias U.N. Owen.

Answer: Lawrence Wargrave

Wargrave was accused of sentencing Edward Seton to death despite the possibility Seton was innocent. Wargrave claimed he knew Seton was guilty because he knew of inadmissible evidence against him. Wargrave is the mysterious U.N. Owen. He wanted to commit murder and leave an ingenious puzzle behind but could only bring himself to kill people who he believed deserved it, such as people who murdered but could not be punished for it.

He originally faked his death with Armstrong under the pretense that he would be able to catch the killer in the act. In reality, this allowed Wargrave to kill without being suspected. After he has killed the other nine, Wargrave commits suicide in such a manner that makes it look like he died when he faked his death, in accordance to the other guests' journals.

In the 2015 adaptation, Wargrave reveals himself to be U.N. Owen to Vera before killing her. He then shoots himself at the dining room table to frame the nonexistent U.N. Owen.
