Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Beside which lake did the Elves "awaken"?

Answer: Cuivenen

They mingled near the shores of the lake until being discovered by the Vala Orome.
2. The Elves awakened immediately after which cosmic event?

Answer: The rekindling of the Stars

Varda used the light from the Two Trees to rekindle the stars. The Elves awoke soon after and have ever since revered her above all other Valar.
3. During the journey to Valinor, which kindred of Elves was so large they had two leaders?

Answer: Teleri

The Teleri were led by the brothers Olwe and Elwe. Elwe later became known as Thingol Greycloak, Lord of Beleriand.
4. True or False: Once leaving Middle-Earth, the Vanyar never returned.

Answer: False

The Vanyar only returned one time, during the War of Wrath, when the Valar finally overthrew Morgoth. Amazingly, none of the Elves already in Middle-Earth, most notably the Noldor, aided the host of the Valar in this endeavour.
5. Curufinwe was better known as:

Answer: Feanor

The greatest Elven smith who ever lived (some would argue he was the greatest smith, Elven or not, who ever lived), Feanor was a fiery prince who led the Noldor to exile in Middle-Earth.
6. This Elf, who later became King of the Noldor, was known as The Valiant:

Answer: Fingon

He was the eldest son of Fingolfin. He became known as the Valiant when he rescued his good friend Maedhros (eldest son of Feanor) from torment on the slopes of Thangorodrim. After the passing of his father he became High King of the Noldor. He was slain by Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs, at the Battle of Unnumbered Tears.
7. How many times has there been a marriage between Elf and Human?

Answer: 4

1) Beren and Luthien; 2) Tuor and Idril; 3) Aragorn and Arwen; and 4) Mithrellas and Imrazôr (these last founded the line of the Princes of Dol Amroth). Interestingly, Aragorn and Arwen are both descendants of these lines. They come together when Beren and Luthien's granddaughter Elwing, marries Tuor and Idril's son, Earendil.

They have two sons, Elrond and Elros. Arwen is Elrond's daughter while Aragorn is descended through thousands of years from Elros.
8. The only two descendants of Feanor to survive into the Second Age were Maglor and _____________.

Answer: Celebrimbor

He was the son of Curufin and Feanor's grandson. He created the Three Elven Rings and was killed when Sauron invaded Eregion in an attempt to gather all the Rings of Power to himself. The only thing known for sure of Maglor's fate is that after casting his recovered Silmaril into the ocean, "...he wandered ever upon the shores, singing in pain and regret beside the waves...but he came never back among the people of the Elves." (The Silmarillion, page 254)
9. What happened to Feanor's spirit upon his death?

Answer: he went to the Halls of Mandos

When Elves were slain or died of grief, their spirits went to the Halls of Mandos in Valinor (also called the Halls of Waiting), there to reflect for a time until they were reborn into new bodies. Feanor, as the leader of the Noldor rebellion, has yet to leave the Halls of Mandos and it may be quite some time until he is seen among the Elves again.
10. Why was Thingol the only one among the Sindarin Elves to be considered one of the Calaquendi?

Answer: He saw the light of the Two Trees

Calaquendi means 'Elves of Light' and meant those Elves who had seen the light of the Two Trees. This included the Vanyar, the Noldor, and those of the Teleri who completed the journey prior to the destruction of the Trees. As one of the two leaders of the Teleri, Thingol (then known as Elwe) was one of those taken by Orome to Valinor to show them what awaited their people if they came.

He never returned, however, as he met Melian the Maia on the journey and remained in Middle-Earth with her until his death.
11. True or False: The original owners of the Three Elven Rings were all Elves.

Answer: True

The three original owners were: Gil-Galad (Vilya), Cirdan (Narya), and Galadriel (Nenya). Gil-Galad gave his ring to Elrond prior to his death at the end of the Second Age; Cirdan gave his ring to Gandalf when the Wizard arrived in Middle-Earth in the Third Age; and Galadriel kept her ring until the end of the Third Age.
12. Who was the first Elf to meet the race of Men during the First Age?

Answer: Finrod

Finrod loved to roam the forests of Beleriand and while in the land of the Green Elves, near the Blue Mountains, Finrod happened across a camp of Men. He took out his harp and began to sing and the Men woke up and sat there in wonder. Many pledged their service to the Elves and aided them in their war against Morgoth.
13. Which Elf slew Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs?

Answer: Ecthelion

Gothmog killed many notable Elves during the First Age, including Feanor and Fingon, but met his end during the attack on Gondolin. Ecthelion of the Fountain, Captain of the King's Guard, faced him in the courtyard and after a pitched battle, dragged him to the bottom of the fountain, where the Elf and Balrog perished.
14. At the time of the "Lord of the Rings", who is the only one of the leaders of the Noldor rebellion still left in Middle-Earth?

Answer: Galadriel

Galadriel was the only child of Finarfin to survive the First Age. She had wanted to go back to Middle-Earth to see new lands and kingdoms. At the end of the First Age, she was one of the few Noldor that the Valar still banned from returning to Valinor.

She lived through another two full ages of Middle-Earth and her opposition to Sauron and rejection of the One Ring finally allowed her to return at the end of the Third Age.
15. Whose name is accursed among other Elves and is known as the Traitor?

Answer: Maeglin

Aredhel dwelt with her brother Turgon in the hidden kingdom of Gondolin. She ventured forth (against Turgon's wishes) and met Eol with whom she had a son, Maeglin. She and Maeglin returned to Gondolin where he became mighty among its people. However, he secretly lusted for Idril, Turgon's daughter, and desperately wanted to be named heir to the throne.

When Tuor came to Gondolin as an emissary of Ulmo, however, Idril and Tuor fell in love and Maeglin became bitter and full of hatred as both objects of desire were gone. On a mining expedition, he was captured and brought before Morgoth where he revealed the location of Gondolin and agreed to further aid the treachery from within. And so he returned to the city.

When the assault of Morgoth came, Maeglin took Idril and her son (Earendil) captive until they were rescued by her now husband, Tuor. Maeglin was killed by Tuor when he was thrown from the city walls.

This ended the last of the Elven realms of the First Age.
