Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the title "40 Carats" mean?

Answer: Being 40 years old

The expression "40 Carats" refers to a person, especially a woman, being 40 years of age. This movie is about a 40 year old woman who has a liaison with a 22 year old man while on holiday in Greece. Amazingly they meet again in New York. No more spoilers.
2. The main character, Ann Stanley, was played by whom?

Answer: Liv Ullmann

Liv Ullmann, was born in Japan, lived in Canada and the United States before moving to Norway. Ullmann is considered a Norwegian actress as her parents were Norwegians working internationally. Ullmann is probably better known for her work and liaison with Ingmar Bergman. Successful on stage and in film Ullmann has an impressive list of successes as well as film/role rejections.

In my opinion, she is an underestimated actress of incredible talent.
3. Who was the love interest Ann meets when her car breaks down?

Answer: Peter Latham

When Ann's car breaks down along comes Peter Latham on his motor bike. At first Ann is suspicious and hesitant to accept assistance from Peter, but he finally persuades her to come with him. A friendship begins and Ann lets her reserve down, talks and laughs, drinks ouzo and enjoys her time with Peter, finally highlighting in a summer sexual fling.
4. Who stars as Ann Stanley's ex-husband?

Answer: Gene Kelly

Gene Kelly plays the philanthropist husband extremely well. He still has feelings for Ann, on a friendship level, and wants to see her happy. It seems to be one of those movies where the "ex" is portrayed in a positive light instead of a negative one.
5. How does Peter meet Ann again?

Answer: At a party

Ann's daughter attends a party with Peter as her escort. Peter is only interested in Ann, whereas Ann is deeply concerned about the age difference. No matter what Ann says or does, Peter is unbending in his love and devotion for her, and finally Ann realises that she too feels the same for Peter.
6. Who makes Ann doubt her relationship with Peter (making her run away)?

Answer: Peter's father

Although Ann has doubts about their relationship it is the comments from Peter's father, played by Don Porter, that make her rethink the situation and run away. Peter's father's relentless "common sense" assessment of the situation ensures that Ann flees to release Peter from a relationship that "should not be".
7. Who encourages Ann to re-evaluate her relationship with Peter, and the meaning of happiness?

Answer: Billy Boylan

When Ann locks herself away after the confrontation with Peter's father, Billy, Ann's ex-husband, makes her see reason. Simply said Billy says "how do you see yourself without him?". Still doubting the situation Ann leaves New York and travels, to sort out her feelings, thoughts and future direction.
8. Where does Ann go to, and finally, re-kindle her relationship with Peter?

Answer: Greece

Ann returns to the Greek Islands with the hope or hopelessness of meeting Peter again. Peter returns on his own seeking to be with Ann knowing he is in love with her, no matter what age she is. Finally they re-meet and rekindle their romance.
9. Throughout the movie there is one form of transport that is represented more than anything else. What is it?

Answer: Motorcycle

The use of the motorcycle during the film extends the realisation of the age difference between the two lovers and is used as a symbol of the ridiculousness of the situation they have become entangled in. Ann is a serious business woman who is in real estate, with an ex-husband, a teenage daughter and should be travelling in limousines and here she is travelling on a motorbike. The youth of her suitor is exaggerated by the fact that he rides a motorbike.
When they fall in love it is the symbolism of the freedom of the bike that suggests the freedom of their relationship.
10. Who was the director of "40 Carats"?

Answer: Milton Katselas

Milton Katselas was probably more known for his coaching and acting classes than his directing. Katselas was an American director and producer of stage and film. Known for productions such as "The Zoo Story" and "Call Me By My Rightful" and was finally acknowledged with a nomination for Tony Award for "Butterfies Are Free".

Kateslas was heavily involved with teaching young actors their craft. Founding The Beverly Hills Playhouse in 1978 Kateslas spent 30 years giving acting classes. Some of Kateslas' students would be well known to you, such as, Gene Hackman, George Clooney, Alec Baldwin, Tyne Daly and Ted Danson, to name just a few.
