Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sitting on my window ledge is Clint Eastwood's only musical, set during the gold rush. When he falls in love, Clint sings "I Talk To The Trees". What is this DVD?

Answer: Paint Your Wagon

"I talk to the trees,
But they don't listen to me.
I talk to the stars,
But they never hear me."

Clint plays Pardner, a simple farmer who gets caught up in the Gold Rush. After breaking an arm and a leg in a wagon accident, he is rescued by prospector Ben, played by Lee Marvin. They become partners in prospecting for gold and much fun, drinking and arguing follows.
2. Another film on the ledge is a modern musical. All of the songs were taken from the catalogue of one 1970's Super Group. The songs are all sung in the film by actors who are not known for their singing. It was a stage show first. What is this DVD?

Answer: Mamma Mia

All of the songs in "Mamma Mia!" are from the Swedish group ABBA. Despite what the critics say, I like Pierce Brosnan's singing, along with the rest of the cast. It is a "feel good film" as all of the cast seem to be having a great time.

The film follows the wedding plans of a young woman living on a Greek island with her mother. Having found her mother's old diary, the daughter invites three extra guests and much confusion, twists and turns follow.
3. The next musical on my ledge is from 1958. A MGM musical, the title was not capitalized to emphasise the diminutive stature of the film's title character. What is this family DVD?

Answer: tom thumb

Russ Tamblyn, most ably supported by a cast of mostly British actors, showcased his wonderful gymnastic skills in this film based on the fairy tale of the same name. I always want to play in his bedroom, especially with the giant pencils.

A childless couple wish for a child, even one "As small as a thumb". Although small in size, big hearted Tom charms all that he meets and manages to save the local town in the process.
4. An even older musical, this one from 1948 comes next on my ledge. MGM brought together Gene Kelly and Judy Garland and they performed the unforgettable Cole Porter song, "Be A Clown". The slightly complicated plot-line put many off. Which DVD with a nautical title, but set on dry land, is this?

Answer: The Pirate

This film was directed by Judy Garland's then husband, Vincente Minnelli. The highlight of the film for me, was the acrobatic dancing of The Nicholas Brothers along with Gene Kelly. Shorn of all the sub plots, it is really just the usual "boy meets girl" romance.

The pirate in the title refers to a pirate whom all in the film had thought was just a legend. By the end of the film many lives have been changed, mostly for the better and the pirate is unmasked.
5. Next is a musical based on a Neil Simon Broadway hit. The film stars Shirley MacLaine with an all star supporting cast, including Sammy Davis Jr and Ricardo Montalban. Which DVD is this?

Answer: Sweet Charity

Sammy Davis Jr sang "Rhythm of Life" as Big Daddy Brubeck, the leader of a sect. Ricardo Montalban was the charismatic movie star whose girlfriend turned up, necessitating Charity being put into a dressing room for the night.

Charity Hope Valentine is a rather naive dance hall hostess who wants to better herself, but does not know how. After meeting a shy young man and becoming friends, life starts to look up, but he does not know what her job is.
6. An Oscar winning performance by Yul Brynner is, for me, the highlight of this next musical, one in which Marni Nixon supplied her voice, but not her face. It is based on a true story of a woman of British descent who lived 1831 - 1915. Which DVD is this?

Answer: The King and I

The musical was written for Gertrude Lawrence, who starred in the Broadway production, but she unfortunately died before the film went into production. Many actresses were considered for the role of Anna, but Deborah Kerr got the part at the insistence of Yul Brynner. Marni Nixon supplied the singing voice and she and Deborah Kerr worked hard together so speech and singing matched.

Anna traveled to Siam, now Thailand, as the governess to the children of the king. She also advised the king on foreign matters and they became as friendly as two people from such differing backgrounds can.

The film is based on the book "Anna and the King of Siam" a semi-fictionalized biographical novel about Anna Leonowens.
7. Next comes the musical based on a book by James A. Michener and set during WW2. The use of coloured filters warns that a song is on the way, but you can forgive that minor aberration in this otherwise faultless film, set in an exotic location. What DVD is this?

Answer: South Pacific

The director wanted subtle colour changes for the songs, but 20th Century Fox made them stronger due to the limitation of the 35mm film used for non-cinematic release.

A WW2 nurse, serving on a Pacific island, falls in love with a local planter with a shady past. A newly arrived officer is cultivated by a local for a surprising reason.

James A. Michener's book is "Tales of the South Pacific". I am reading it, but finding it harder to read than to watch the DVD.
8. A biographical drama film comes next. This musical focusses on the early troubled years of a famous Country singer. It is full of songs sung by the two stars. Which Oscar winning DVD is this?

Answer: Walk the Line

Joaquin Phoenix was excellent as Johnny Cash, known as the "Man in Black" and that is the name of the autobiography used as a source for the film. Reese Witherspoon won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of June Carter Cash.

The film starts with Johnny as a young boy and catalogues the pivotal points in his life, including the death of his brother, family problems, drugs, drinking, meeting June, auditions, touring and Nashville.
9. Next in line is a 2004 film, the adaptation of a musical of the same name, which in turn was based on a French novel. The stage show is a massive hit around the world and has broken the record for the longest-running show on Broadway. What is this DVD?

Answer: The Phantom of the Opera

The musical film had a mixed reception from the critics. As the stage musical is so well loved, but expensive to attend, the DVD is a great way to your "Phantom" fix.

The young Phantom kills the man who has been keeping him as a freak, but is rescued by a pupil from the opera ballet. Some years later the Phantom coaches a promising young singer. Gerard Butler gives a powerful performance and makes the viewer understand why Christine, the impressionable young singer, is taken in by the Phantom.
10. Last, but by no means least, a film that has gone around the world since the release in 1965. This is another musical based upon a true story, though somewhat altered, but still set in Austria. Which much loved musical is this?

Answer: The Sound of Music

"The Sound of Music" won five Oscars, including Best Picture. It overtook "Gone With the Wind" as the highest-grossing film of all-time. Even the cast album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

The film follows Maria as she leaves the nunnery, where she is yet to take her vows, as she becomes a governess to the Von Trapp children. First she charms the children and then their father. After their marriage, the whole family escape the Nazis and climb the mountains to Switzerland.
