Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "Call Me By Your Name" soundtrack includes a rap song played during volleyball. What is it?

Answer: Paris Latino

"Paris Latino" is the song played during the volleyball game. The song was originally written by Carlos Perez and José Perez. It was released in 1983 and performed by the group, Bandolero. However, "Call Me By Your Name" used a cover version that was performed by the group, Star Academy 2.
2. According to Oliver, who rendered him first-aid when he fell from his bike?

Answer: Anchise

Anchise is the Perlmans' handyman, grounds keeper, chauffeur, gardener, etc. When Oliver fell not only did he injure his body he also dented the bike which Anchise repaired. Oliver shows Elio the scrape he got during the fall and that Anchise had applied some black ointment to it.
3. What whimsical nickname does Elio give Oliver when he arrives at the villa for his summer of tutelage with his father, Professor Perlman?

Answer: The usurper

Elio is up in his room moving his things for the summer guest. He is visited by his friend Marzia, a French student. He suddenly hears a car pulling up outside. His mom yells upstairs to let Elio know the student has arrived. Elio says to Marzia, "The usurper." He calls Oliver the usurper because like every summer, once the new graduating student arrives he must vacate his room and move to the smaller room next door. To usurp is to take over one's place or position.
4. What is Mafalda cooking when Elio comes home in the winter and gives her a hug and kiss on the cheek?

Answer: Latkes

It is the winter time and the Perlmans are preparing for Hanukkah dinner. Elio comes into the kitchen and greets Mafalda with a hug and kiss that shows he has matured since Oliver. Mafalda is preparing a Hanukkah dish known as latkes and Elio grabs one for sampling. He obviously likes the potato pancake since he says, "Mmm... Latkes." Latkes are a traditional dish eaten during the eight-day Hanukkah celebration.

The introduction of latkes into the story has to give further credence to the Perlmans supporting Elio's choices and especially his decision to wear his Star of David openly.
5. Which producer of "Call Me By Your Name" has a cameo appearance in the film as part of a couple?

Answer: Peter Spears

Peter Spears is Issac in the film and is half of a gay couple. Within the family the couple is lovingly called Sonny and Cher by Annella, although they look more like Laurel and Hardy. Isaac, in his pink suit with boutonniere, takes an interest in sharing Sammy's snapshots. Isaac and Mounir sent Elio the flower shirt he wore during dinner the night of their visit.
6. Oliver arrives at the Perlmans' villa in what make of car?

Answer: Fiat

Oliver is driven to the villa in a Fiat. Anchise brings Oliver to the villa so it is safe to believe it is his personal automobile. The car, which was actually a Fiat 127 Hatchback, can be seen parked alongside the Perlmans' car as Elio and Oliver are outside chatting about Chiara.

The 127 was the first hatchback for Fiat. If you watch the car closely you see the hinges on top indicative of the hatchback.
7. After Professor Perlman tells Oliver about the word apricot, Oliver disagrees with him then gives his own knowledge of the word. Oh what does Oliver base his knowledge?

Answer: Philology 101

Oliver gives such a long and drawn out explanation of how the apricot got its name through language after language, country after country. When he is done he gives a little smile and says it was courtesy of philology 101.

Oliver tells the Perlmans everything they already know about the word 'apricot'. The professor says to him, "Flying colors," as he makes the sign of the cross. Elio says to Oliver, "He does this every year."

Philology is knowing the very beginnings of the word all the way through all its languages and countries to present day usage.
8. Annella reads to both her husband and Elio from "The Decameron".

Answer: False

During some bad weather Annella reads from her "Heptameron". She reads the story of The Princess and The Knight who loved her but dared not to speak it. The inevitable question for him was, "Is it better to speak or to die?" Elio is in the same position with Oliver. He doesn't know how to approach Oliver and he seems not to relate to anyone around, not even his parents who let him know he can always come to them. As Annella reads the story Elio lays across both his parents' laps.

He talks to Oliver about the story, and Oliver asks what the knight decided. Elio says he fudges... to which Oliver makes a joke about Frenchmen. However, shortly after this Elio speaks his truth to Oliver. For him it is better to speak; he is already dying, and he needs to save himself.
9. Elio's favorite reading spot is fed by what mountain's waters?

Answer: Alpi Orobie

Elio's spot is a pond or little lake that catches water from the Alpi Orobie. Alpi Orobie is also known as Bergamasque Alps or Bergamo Alps. It is located in Northern Lombardy and named for the town of Bergamo to its south.

As Oliver and Elio ride the bus on that winding trail they are headed to Alpi Orobie which is the mountain they climb during the waterfall scene. Elio once shared a little spot of his life with Oliver. He now shares the entire Alpi Orobie with Oliver to show the growth of his love for him.
10. In "Call Me By Your Name" how does Oliver know the man named Romano?

Answer: Man outside poker bar

Oliver and Romano know each other because they play poker at the same bar/club. Oliver gives him a friendly, "Ciao Romano!" and Romano answers back, "Ciao Oliver!" Oliver asks "How are things?" Romano replies, "All good!" Oliver and Elio then enter the club and greet the men playing poker in a knowing manner as well. Oliver played poker in college in the States so it would be like him to find a group to play with in Italy. Romano was a part of that group.
11. After Elio's call from Oliver he picks up something from the table and flips it. Is what Elio picks up known as a gelt?

Answer: Yes

After Elio's call from Oliver he walks by the table, picks up a gelt and does a heads or tails flip of the gelt. Gelt is a traditional Hanukkah treat made of chocolate. It can also be a coin. And at this time Elio has to make a decision about his life; flipping a gelt which is a winner's gift during this very sacred season would seem like a win/win for Elio.

Elio told Oliver that they came to Italy in the winter to celebrate Christmas. However, their home is adorned to celebrate Hanukkah from the menorah, to the latkes, to the gelt. These are all traditional Hanukkah objects. Elio's family is giving him support as he found the courage to proudly display his Magen David.
12. Which one of the books below by Heraclitus is Oliver reading during his stay with the Perlmans?

Answer: The Cosmic Fragments

"The Cosmic Fragments" would be a part of Oliver's doctoral thesis. He is doing a paper on Heraclitus who wrote the book. As Elio prepares to snoop in Oliver's room he picks up "The Cosmic Fragments" and reads from Oliver's notes on how thing remain the same by changing as in a flowing river.

The river is steadily moving water so it is changing constantly. However, it is always there as the river; it can swell or diminish but it will always be the river. "The Cosmic Fragments" is a constant companion of Oliver's during the early part of the movie.
13. The morning after Elio and Oliver's date night, the breakfast table is without what usual item?

Answer: Apricot juice

The vessel of apricot juice is symbolic to the lovers like so many other things in the movie. The colors green and peach are seen a lot in the movie. Annella grows apricots and peaches but the apricot juice is more of a delicacy. It has a different texture and taste than orange juice and perhaps requires an acquired taste. Oliver has no problem downing the juice and showing he welcomes more.

It is something he could get used to. After their date night and the consummation of their desires the apricot juice is not served.

The union of the lovers is complete.
14. While dancing on the street, what band does Oliver tell his dance partner he saw while they were in New York?

Answer: The Psychedelic Furs

The Psychedelic Furs led by Richard and Tim Butler formed in London in 1977. Their music style consists of New Wave, Post-Punk, and Alternative Rock. In "Call Me By Your Name" their song "Love My Way" is a song of freedom for Oliver. On the dance floor and again during the street scene, his inhibitions are lost as he soaks in the words and meaning of "Love My Way".

The album "Forever Now" was recorded in 1982 by the Psychedelic Furs with Todd Rundgren as the producer. From this album came "Love My Way" which was the first song by Psychedelic Furs to hit Billboard's Hot 100.
15. While Annella and Mafalda prepare the outdoor table for dinner guests, Elio is asked if Oliver will be there. He doesn't know. As he walks on by he hears them speaking about Oliver in a flattering way and listens. What does Elio do next?

Answer: Shaves

Elio hears the housekeeper call Oliver "movie star", and his mom saying, "Yes, those Americans!", after he leaves the volleyball game. Elio goes inside and is then seen shaving. He then takes a look at himself in the mirror and shows a wrinkled brow. Oliver is a blond, tanned, tall guy of 24. Elio is a dark, slightly shorter, pale and thin 17 year old.
