Soon after Holly Martin arrives in Vienna, he learns several things about his friend's death that do not make sense. He is told that there were three witnesses to the accident, two of them friends of the victim, who carried the body away, and a stranger who happened to be in the area.

When Martin visits this last man trying to learn more about the accident, he is told there was a third person carrying the body away. Then, Martin realizes there is more to the story than what he is told by the deceased's friends.

In "Vertigo", Scottie follows Madelaine everywhere and when she throws herself in the water, trying to commit suicide, he rescues her and eventually falls in love with her. Then things take a strange turn and Scottie's fear of heights, his reason for retiring from the police, prevents him from saving a life. This tragic accident does not end the movie, there is much more after that.
