Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote the screenplay for this magnificent film?

Answer: Charlie Kaufman

Charlie Kaufman also wrote the screenplays for 'Being John Malkovich', 'Adaptation', 'Human Nature', and 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind'. Michel Gondry was the director for both this film and 'Human Nature'. Donald Kaufman was the fictitious twin brother of Charlie, made up for the story of 'Adaptation', although some believe him to be real. David Koepp had nothing to do with this picture, but he's a good writer too.
2. Along with a great writer/director team, this movie had a very impressive cast. Who, among the the following, did NOT play a character in the movie?

Answer: Jon Brion

Jon Brion was actually the one who provided the original score for the film. He's also done music for 'I Heart Huckabees', 'Punch-Drunk Love' and 'Magnolia'. Mark Ruffalo played Stan, one of the geeks sent to perform the memory erasure procedure on Joel. Tom Wilkinson played Dr. Howard Mierzwiak, and David Cross (a great comic actor) was Joel's friend Rob, who told him about Lacuna (the place that does the memory erasures).
3. Joel (Jim Carrey) ditches work and catches a train to which location?

Answer: Montauk

We find out near the end of the movie that Clementine whispered 'Meet me in Montauk' to Joel just before his last memory of her was erased. This was why he had an urge to go to Montauk, even though he doesn't know why.
4. What were the names of the couple who told Joel about Lacuna, and how Clementine had had the procedure done?

Answer: Rob & Carrie

Carrie was hesitant to give Joel the information he needed, while Rob wanted to tell him. It was also Rob & Carrie who brought Joel to the party where he ended up meeting Clementine.
5. After Clementine introduces herself to Joel on the train, she tells him not to make fun of her name, then references which Hanna Barbera cartoon character?

Answer: Huckleberry Hound

Huckleberry Hound was known for his fondness for the song 'My Darling Clementine', which is what most people think of when they hear Clementine's name for the first time. Since at this point in the story Joel has had everything to do with Clementine erased from his memory, he has no idea who Huckleberry Hound is and therefore can't make fun of her name. We later find out that when he met her the FIRST time, he did indeed think of Huckleberry Hound after he heard her name.
6. Clementine had a habit of changing her hair color all the time. Which is the correct order of her hair color, in the context of the actual story? (Remember, the memory erasing pretty much goes backwards in relation to the storyline. To make it easier, I'll give you the first one.)

Answer: Green, Red, Orange, Blue

When Clem and Joel first meet, at the beach party, her hair is green, but has already grown out, so you can see the roots. By their first date, she has dyed her hair red, and it seems to stay that way for all the happiest moments in their relationship. Once she dyes her hair orange, which is when Joel calls her a tangerine, problems begin to arise between them.

After they break up, and Clem has the memory erasure done, she dyes her hair blue. She then meets Joel for the second time on the train, and reveals her hair color to be 'Blue Ruin'.
7. Here's a bit of a tough one, what is Clementine's last name?

Answer: Kruczynski

It was only mentioned twice, as far as I know. The first time was on the train scene, when they are talking about hair dye, and how she would like to have the job of naming the hair colors (IE. Blue Ruin, Red Menace, Green Fever). She says, 'My writing career! Your hair written by Clementine Kruczynski.' It's also on the card that tells Joel she's erased him.
8. During Joel's erasure, one of the three technicians reveals to another that he stole something of Clementine's during her erasure. What was it?

Answer: Panties

It was Elijah Wood's character (Patrick) who did this. He ended up falling in love with Clem during her procedure, and he stole all of Joel's items which he brought that reminded him of Clem (one of the steps in the procedure). He used these items to begin dating Clementine, but he also ended up just freaking her out because he knew her so well and a lot of the things he said seemed familiar to her (as they were already said to her by Joel).
9. We find out that Mary, one of the technicians and the receptionist at Lacuna, had her memory erased of something as well. What was it?

Answer: She had an affair with Dr. Mierzwiak

She finds out when she confesses her love to the Doctor and kisses him. Ms. Mierzwiak sees this happen and tells her that she can have him, in fact she already did. So she breaks into Lacuna and finds her tape which explains about her previous involvement with Dr. Mierzwiak.

She decides that this 'service' they provide isn't as great as she thought it would be, and sends out all the patient's tapes to them so they can regain their erased memories. It's because of this that Joel and Clementine find out they've already been together.
10. What is the final line in the movie?

Answer: 'OK.'

This is in response to Clementine assuring Joel that he will find things about her that he doesn't like, and she'll get bored with him because it's what she does. He simply responds, 'OK.'. She says 'OK' back to him, and they laugh together before we see them running down the beach of Montauk together.

Interestingly, the original script of the movie had a much different ending, which was Clementine coming back to Lacuna to have Joel erased again, presumably for the nth time. I personally am glad they stuck with this ending, because you can decide what happens to them. Thanks for taking my quiz, I hope you enjoyed it.
