The limited budget was the main reason it was shot in black and white, not to hide the gore. It was also a deciding factor in shooting on 35mm.

It was a shell of a house that was scheduled to be bulldozed. It took production director Vince Survinski 2 months to furnish it.

Fran demanded to know how to fly the helicopter in case something happened to Steven. Peter originally sent Fran away to the chopper, intending to kill some zombies then himself. He changed his mind at the last minute.

Joe Pilato also played a cop in "Dawn of the Dead."
