Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I've starred in several of Woody's movies, including "Bananas" in 1971 and "Stardust Memories" in 1980. One more thing, I was married to Woody in real life. Who am I?

Answer: Louise Lasser

Louise Lasser appeared in four of Woody's earliest films. Lasser was probably best known for the television cult favorite "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman", first broadcast during 1976-77. Louise and Woody were married for three years, Louise being his second wife. Woody's first marriage was to Harlene Rosen.

They married in 1956, and parted bitterly in 1962. She later sued him for making jokes about her in his stand-up comedy act.
2. I played music producer Tony Lacey in Woody's great film "Annie Hall" in 1977. I'm actually much better known as a musician, rather than as an actor. I used to be part of a musical duo, but I've mostly been on my own since the early 1970s. I was married to Carrie Fisher once upon a time. Who am I?

Answer: Paul Simon

Paul Simon has shown up in several films, and it's fairly obvious that his great talent is his music. Paul Simon is one of the all-time great American singer-songwriters. He began his career as half of Simon and Garfunkel, when he began singing with his friend Art Garfunkel.

They idolized the Everly Brothers, and imitated their sound when they began recording professionally, calling themselves "Tom and Jerry". They made many wonderful and successful recordings together, but finally parted ways in 1970.

They have occasionally reunited since. Simon's most famous and widely praised solo work is "Graceland" (1986).
3. I appeared in Woody's most serious film, his homage to Ingmar Bergman, "Interiors". I've been in a few of his films since then. Nowadays I make my living working in television; I'm on a popular and long-running cops-and-lawyers show. Do you know who I am?

Answer: Sam Waterston

Sam Waterston is well-known for his portrayal of District Attorney Jack McCoy on the television series "Law and Order". On the big screen, he appeared in "The Great Gatsby" (1974), "The Killing Fields" (1984) (he was nominated for an Oscar for that one), and Woody Allen's "Crimes and Misdemeanors" (1989).

He has also been nominated for several Emmy Awards. "Interiors" (1978) was an especially somber movie, that was not terribly successful at the box office. It was Oscar-nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Geraldine Page) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Maureen Stapleton).
4. One of my first movie roles was in Woody's masterpiece, "Manhattan". I played his ex-wife Jill, who left Isaac Davis (Woody's character) for another woman. I've done very well in films since, winning several Academy Awards. Who am I?

Answer: Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep's first appearance in a Woody Allen film was in "Manhattan", released in 1979. In the film, Allen kept saying how beautiful she was, and she did look especially lovely in this film. It was one of her first, and she has since gone on to a remarkable number of fine portrayals.

She has received numerous Oscar nominations. She's won thrice, for "Kramer vs Kramer" (1979) and "Sophie's Choice" (1982) and "The Iron Lady" (2011). A few more of her wonderful films are: "The Deer Hunter" (1978), "The French Lieutenant's Woman" (1981), "Silkwood" (1983).

These have been all Oscar nominated, brilliant performances.
5. I have worked on quite a few projects with Mr. Allen. In "Broadway Danny Rose", I played Tina Vitale, a gangster's moll, opposite Mr. Allen's character, talent agent Danny Rose. We had quite a productive collaboration, although that's in the past. After some personal differences, we no longer speak. Who am I?

Answer: Mia Farrow

Mia Farrow appeared in thirteen of Allen's films, and gave some lovely performances, from "The Purple Rose of Cairo" (1985)to "Broadway Danny Rose" (1984). Farrow and Allen were a couple for a long time, and had a child together, but separated when Farrow discovered that Woody Allen was having an affair with her adopted daughter, Soon-Yi. Allen and Soon-Yi eventually married.
6. Call me "Sir". I won an Oscar for "Hannah and Her Sisters" in 1986. I was born in London, and have appeared in over one hundred films. Who am I?

Answer: Michael Caine

Michael Caine, or Sir Maurice Joseph Micklewhite (his real name), first became known for his role in the 1964 film "Zulu". That was followed by two of his best-known roles: "The Ipcress File" (1965), and "Alfie" in 1966. Sir Michael is well-known for almost never turning down a role in a movie, and he's had his share of bad ones. But he's also had many successes, such as "The Man Who Would Be King" (1975 and "Educating Rita" (1983).

He won an Oscar for his role as the love-struck, philandering husband of Mia Farrow in "Hannah and Her Sisters" (1986).

He has a total of six Oscar nominations and two wins, the other for "The Cider House Rules" (1999). The other three actors mentioned are also "Sirs", having received the Order of the British Empire from the Queen of England.
7. My Woody Allen movie was "Crimes and Misdemeanors", made in 1989. I played Dolores Paley, who had a long-term affair with Judah Rosenthal (Martin Landau). Judah wanted to break up, and I didn't take it very well. My father was an Oscar-winning director and actor, and I received an Oscar myself. Who am I?

Answer: Anjelica Huston

Anjelica is the daughter of director John Huston and the granddaughter of actor Walter Huston. She began her career as a fashion model, and her first attempts at film acting were poorly received by critics. Anjelica Huston has an Oscar for "Prizzi's Honor" (1985), and was nominated for "Enemies: A Love Story" (1989) and "The Grifters" (1990) as well.

She also appeared in Woody Allen's "Manhattan Murder Mystery" (1993).
8. I'm the daughter of a well-known character actor, and I had my chance to work with Woody in "Mighty Aphrodite". I played a prostitute with a very squeaky voice, and I have an Oscar to show for it. So, who am I?

Answer: Mira Sorvino

Mira is the daughter of Paul Sorvino. Her parents were against an acting career for her, and she attended Harvard University, graduating magna cum laude in East Asian Studies. She then embarked upon a film career, appearing in "Barcelona", an independent film, in 1994. Soon afterward she was cast in "Mighty Aphrodite", in 1995, and pulled off her Oscar win.

She also starred in "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" (1997) and "At First Sight" (1999). More recently, she has taken several roles in independent movies. Mira dated director Quentin Tarantino for several years before marrying actor Christopher Backus in 2004.
9. I was the leading man in "The Purple Rose of Cairo" (1985). It was the story of Cecilia, a sad young waitress who found escape from her bleak and joyless life while at the movies. I played Tom Baxter, and I popped right out of the screen and into Cecilia's life. I also appeared in a movie with lots of spiders, but it wasn't one of Woody's films. Who am I?

Answer: Jeff Daniels

Jeff Daniels has appeared in "Something Wild" in 1986, "Terms of Endearment" in 1983, "Arachnophobia" (1990) and "Pleasantville" (1998). "The Purple Rose of Cairo" took place during the Great Depression. At the end of the film, when the young woman (Cecilia) found herself alone again, she went to the movies, as she had always done. Cecilia saw a film with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Astaire began to sing "Cheek to Cheek", then he and Rogers danced together. Cecilia's face was slowly transformed from sad to radiant as she watched their magnificent dancing, and was lost in their magic. Mia Farrow played Cecilia, and it's one of the most wonderful and moving moments in film that I've ever seen. Woody Allen has been quoted as saying that of all the films he's made, this one was his personal favorite.

The "Cheek to Cheek" number was from the 1935 film "Top Hat".
10. Well, la-de-da. I was Woody's leading lady in many films, and in real life for a while too. I won a Best Actress Academy Award for one of my portrayals, in 1977. I can sing okay, too. Did you catch my "Radio Days" number? Who am I?

Answer: Diane Keaton

Diane Keaton sang an absolutely beautiful rendition of "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" in "Radio Days", a 1987 Allen film. This talented and versatile star has appeared in many successful films in addition to her roles in Woody's films. Consider the "Godfather" Trilogy (1972, 1974, 1990) "Reds" (1981), "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" (1977) "The First Wives Club" (1996) and "Something's Gotta Give" (2003).

She's had a great career, and is still going strong. Woody Allen still continues to make movies, and there will always be an interesting group of actors in the cast. Everyone wants to be in a Woody Allen film.
