Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Welsh actor to win an Academy Award won for his performance in 'The Lost Weekend'. Originally, he was named Alfred Reginald Jones. What was his stage name?

Answer: Ray Milland

Alfred Reginald Jones was born in Neath in 1907. He made movies from 1929 to 1985. He is said to have taken the name Ray Milland from the local Mill lands around Neath. His movies include 'Dial M for Murder', 'Reap the Wild Wind' and my personal favourite, 'X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes'.

His Oscar at the 1946 ceremony came for one of the all-time great movie performances as Don Birnam in Billy Wilder's searing examination of a man's struggle with alcoholism, 'The Lost Weekend'. To prepare for the movie, he spent time at a psychiatric ward where alcoholics were being treated.

The movie also scooped Best Film, Director and Adapted Screenplay (Wilder with Charles Brackett). Wilder was drawn to the subject partly because of his frustrating experience of working with the recovering alcoholic Raymond Chandler.

2. Austrian born director Fritz Lang started his film-making career in Germany during the Weimar Republic Era. After fleeing Nazi Germany, he continued his thread of film noir movies from Hollywood. Which of the following epic movies is NOT one of his movies?

Answer: Dial M for Murder (1954)

'Dial M for Murder' was directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and stars Ray Milland as a man who plots to murder his wife, played by Grace Kelly.

'Metroplis' is the first feature length science fiction movie with a dark dystopian theme.

Set in Berlin, 'M' was a harrowing movie about a child murderer hunted down by criminal gangs and beggars. Lang considered this to be his best film.

'Fury' was Lang's first Hollywood movie. In the movie, Spencer Tracy is arrested on flimsy evidence for kidnapping a child and narrowly escapes a lynch mob. The movie was honored with an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Story.

3. In 1987, Richard Pryor starred in a comedy in which he feigns insanity to keep from being tried for a jewelry heist and gets sent to the mental ward of a hospital. Of course, there is a terrible storm, with the hospital suffering from flooding and a power failure throughout the movie. Pryor ends up impersonating a surgeon and falling for the leading lady, played by Rachel Ticotin. Which one of Pryor's movies is this?

Answer: Critical Condition

Also cast in the film were Randall 'Tex' Cobb, Bob Saget, and Joe Mantegna. The movie was filmed in High Point, North Carolina at a local hospital scheduled for demolition after a new one was built.

My husband's employer got the job of set construction, and I was lucky enough to work part time on my days off. We got to hang around (but had to be quiet) when some of the filming took place. Of course, since I was covered in sawdust and perspiration most days, I didn't get discovered.

4. When I was a kid, rainy Saturdays were spent watching old black and white movies on TV. My favorite was the 'Tarzan' series starring Johnny Weissmuller set in the wild African jungle. Where were the jungle scenes filmed?

Answer: On the Silver River in Florida

Five of the six 'Tarzan' movies starring Johnny Weissmuller filmed location shots at Silver Springs Nature Park, Florida's oldest tourist attraction, starting with 'Tarzan the Ape Man' (1932). Mr Weissmuller won five Olympic gold medals in the 1920s, and the crystal clear Silver River was perfect for shooting his swimming scenes. One local entrepreneur offered tourists a jungle cruise ride to cash in on the movies' popularity. He put three pairs of macaque monkeys on an island in the middle of the river for the tourists' enjoyment. Unfortunately, he didn't realize that monkeys can swim. Now eighty years later, hundreds of monkeys populate the forests from southern Jacksonville to just north of Orlando. 5. British actor Daniel Craig, now a household name synonymous with the 'James Bond' franchise, made his first appearance as Bond in which film, released worldwide in 2006?

Answer: Casino Royale

'Casino Royale' is the 21st film in the 'James Bond' franchise and Daniel Craig's first, following Pierce Brosnan, who had portrayed Bond from 1995 to 2002, and whose last film in the role was one of the incorrect options 'Die Another Day'. Craig also appeared as 007 in 'Quantum of Solace' and 'Skyfall' in 2008 and 2012 respectively.

The movie involves Bond looking to defeat a weapons dealer at Casino Royale, a high stakes game of Poker.

7. 'Invictus' is a movie centered around the 1995 Rugby World Cup held in South Africa, which South Africa won. Who took the role of Springboks' captain, Francois Pienaar, in the movie?

Answer: Matt Damon

Matt Damon has appeared in many famous movies throughout his film career, including 'Good Will Hunting' (1997) and 'Saving Private Ryan' (1998). In 2007, he was chosen as the Sexiest Man Alive by 'People' magazine.

'Invictus' is based on a book by John Carlin called 'Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation'. The name 'Invictus' was used because Mandela shared the William Ernest Henley poem of the same name with Pienaar as inspiration for the team to get out there and win. The poem, meaning undefeated or unconquered, had inspired Mandela during his time in prison. In the end, the Springboks defeated the All Blacks 15-12 in the finals of the Rugby World Cup. The film was directed by Clint Eastwood and starred Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela.
