Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Player LollyLegs1 asked which country is home to kangaroos, the Murray River, and Uluru?

Answer: Australia

Of course, the kangaroo is the iconic, hopping marsupial which is endemic to Australia, Murray River is Australia's longest river and Uluru, aka Ayers Rock, is the famous rock formation that lies like an island in the sea of the Great Sandy Desert and is sacred to aboriginal people.
2. Player cairnster asked which country you would associate with nationwide tobacco prohibition, Jigme Dorji National Park, and phallic paintings/symbols everywhere?

Answer: Bhutan

The Kingdom of Bhutan is a landlocked country in the Himalayas. It is the first nation to completely ban smoking in public and it is illegal to sell tobacco.

Jigme Dorji National Park is one of the biggest parks in Bhutan and spans all three climate zones, ranging to heights of 7000 meters. It harbors many of the endangered species of the Himalaya area.

The phallus paintings on buildings are a many century old tradition and are meant to ward off evil spirits. For some tourist visitors they are difficult to appreciate.
3. Player Upstart3 asked which country goes with Canton, Cathays, and Pontcanna? How about Splott and Tiger Bay?

Answer: Wales

These names are all areas of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales.

Canton - this has nothing to do with China or Switzerland, coming from "St Canna's Town". St Canna was a 6th century saint. She also gave her name to Pontcanna - Canna's bridge. Pont is Welsh for bridge.

Cathays likewise has no Chinese etymology. It's uncertain - take your pick from "battle area" or "enclosure where wildcats are seen".

Splott - this name comes from Old English - splott meaning patch of land, spot or speck.

Tiger Bay was an area that sprang up around the docks of Cardiff as it went through its massive expansion in the 19th century due to the coal industry, and was settled by people from more than 40 countries, including Somalis, Norwegians, Italians and West Indians. It had a racy image, and was sadly rebranded as Cardiff Bay in the 1990s.
4. Player bubbatom1 inspired us to a tour of Africa, final destination on the West coast, but we were seriously lost. To which country have we been lured by Payar, Dabo, and the Kayanga River?

Answer: Senegal

Senegal is the westernmost country of the African mainland. It's capital is Dakar - as of Paris-Dakar fame, and about 13 Mio. people live here. The climate varies from warm desert in the north, over semi arid in the middles to tropical savannah in the south. The official language is French, the main religion is Islam.

Before the French colonialists took control in the 17th century, the area had belonged to various ethnic groups and kingdoms, then coveted by European powers like Portugal, the Netherlands and Great Britain. Since 1960 Senegal is independent and political succession happens democratically and peacefully. On the Ibrahim Index of African Governance Senegal ranked 16/52 in 2012.
5. Player cairnster wondered which country you would associate with Rafael Correa, 15 million people, and Cotopaxi?

Answer: Ecuador

Ecuador is a county on the Pacific coast of South America and lies, as the name indicates, on the equator. The 2010 census puts the population number at 15 million.

Cotopaxi is the second highest mountain in Ecuador and a very active stratovolcano that belongs to the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Democratic socialist Rafael Correa became the President of Ecuador in 2007. He is one of the longest serving presidents since the 20th century, is popular in his country - under his presidency poverty was alleviated, but is internationally controversial - he opposed World Bank and the IMF. When warned off to accept Edward Snowden, he offered a multi-million dollar grant for civil rights education in the US, effectively repaying the preferential trade benefits Ecuador received.
6. Team member malama asked in which country can you find places with the seemingly incongruous names of Groningen, Tafelberg, and the Arya Dewaker temple? Hint: the country is not in Europe, Asia or Africa.

Answer: Suriname

Suriname on the north-east coast of South America is the smallest country on the continent. Since the late 17th century it has been under Dutch colonial rule and only in 1975 became an independent country.

The official language is still Dutch and many of the place names like Groningen and Tafelberg are Dutch in origin. One legacy of the Dutch rule is a great diversity of ethnicity, the largest group being of East Indian descent and Hindus are the second largest religious group.

The Arya Dewaker temple is one of the biggest Hindu temples in Suriname and one of the sights of the capital Paramaribo.
7. Player Pam1239 wanted to know in which country could you visit Solwezi, Kapiri Mposhi, and Chipata?

Answer: Zambia

Zambia is a landlocked country in Southern Africa.

Solwezi is the province capital of North-Western Province and has become the hub of "New Copperbelt".

Kapiri Mposhi is a small town North of Lusaka, on the map because of the connection between the end of the Tazara railway line from Tanzania and the Zambia Railway line to Lusaka and Livingstone.

Chapati is the capital of Eastern Province and lies at the border to Malawi.
8. Player Jackslade tried to lead us astray - but in which country can you find the Zoroaster Temple, Bright Angel, and Kaibab?

Answer: USA

These are all places in the US and to be more precise in the Grand Canyon area.

Kaibab Plateau in Northern Arizona is part of the Colorado Plateau, here the Kaibab National Forest frames the Grand Canyon.

Bright Angel Trail is a steep trail that descends more than 4000 feet over 8 miles from the Southern Rim of the Grand Canyon down to the Colorado River.

Zoroaster Temple is a stunning, very symmetric formation in the middle of the Grand Canyon and a very ambitious climb.
9. Player Ceistenna gave us the challenge of finding the country associated with San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Mount Teide and the worst aviation disaster of the 20th century. Which is it?

Answer: Spain

Correct answer is Spain.

Until 1833 San Cristobal de La Laguna - aka La Laguna - was the capital city of Tenerife, Spain, and is the seat of the oldest university on the Canary Islands.

In 1977 two Boeing 747 collided on the runway of Los Rodeos (now Tenerife North Airport), 583 people were killed. The accident happened after air traffic had to be diverted from Gando (airport on nearby Gran Canaria) to Los Rodeos on Tenerife. In consequence, at the time of the collision the taxiways were congested with parked airplanes and in this already chaotic situation thick fog developed and reduced visibility so that neither the tower could see the airplanes nor could the airplanes see each other - ground radar was not available.

Mount Teide on Tenerife is the highest point in Spain and in all the islands of the Atlantic. Measured from base level (on the ocean floor) it is the third highest volcano - after Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on Hawaii.
10. Team member malama asked which country would you associate with Negombo, Jaffna, and Yala National Park?

Answer: Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is an island nation East of the Southern tip of India, it's documented history reaches back 3000 years. In recent times Sri Lanka suffered through a long civil war, between insurgent Tamils and the ruling Sinhalese, which lasted from 1983 until 2009.

Negombo and Jaffna are major Sri Lankan cities and Yala National Park is the most visited national park in Sri Lanka, lying on the south east coast. The park includes a variety of ecosystems and is important for the conservation of Sri Lankan elephants and leopards. In 2004 it was severely damaged by the Indian Ocean tsunami.
