Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993)is my favourite Christmas film. Chris Sarandon provides the spoken voice for Jack Skellington, but who provides the singing voice for this character?

Answer: Danny Elfman

Danny Elfman also wrote the music for the film. Danny Elfman has provided the music for several of Tim Burton's films, including "Big Fish", "Sleepy Hollow", "Planet Of The Apes" and "Edward Scissorhands". He has also written music for the films "Hulk", "Good Will Hunting" and "Spider-Man".
2. "Chicago" (2002), with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger, was a huge hit and won the best picture Oscar in 2002. Can you complete this lyric from the song "Roxie": "...and _____ will spit I know, to see her name get billed below Roxie Hart!"

Answer: Sophie Tucker

This is the final line of the song, sung by Roxie (Renee Zellweger). Roxie is talking to 'Mama' (Queen Latifah) about her desire to be on the stage and the movie slips into a fantasy sequence, with Roxie imagining herself performing and becoming a star. This is the 'airline' edit of the movie from the slightly more profane version!
3. "Moulin Rouge" (2001) is a movie musical in which all the songs are cover versions. In the "Elephant Love Medley", sung by Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, which of these songs is not included?

Answer: "I Believe" by Elton John

"Your Song" by Elton John is used. The "Elephant Love Medley" is performed in the Elephant room at the Moulin Rouge, by Satine and Christian. Christian uses the lyrics as 'poetry' to woo Satine, and by the end of the song it has worked and she has fallen in love with him.
4. "Evita" (1996), possibly the only decent film Madonna has ever made, is based on the life of a wife of an Argentinian politician. Who was she?

Answer: Eva Peron

Eva Peron led a very interesting and complicated life, by all accounts. This is a rare musical film, in which all dialogue is sung, with very little talking. Madonna had 85 costume changes in this film, including 39 hats and 45 pair of shoes.
5. As of 2004, "Cry Baby" (1990) is Johnny Depp's only foray into musical cinema. The film also features which chat-show hostess?

Answer: Ricki Lake

This was Ricki's second part in a John Water's film (she also appeared in "Hairspray") before she turned her hand to comforting the emotional masses of the US. Johnny Depp may be trying his hand at singing again soon, in a new Tim Burton remake of "Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory".
6. Can you complete this lyric from the song, "There Are Worse Things I Could Do", sung by Stockard Channing (Rizzo) in "Grease" (1978)? "I don't ___ and I don't ___, but I can ___ and I can ___. That's a fact I bet you never knew"?

Answer: steal, lie, feel, cry

This is sung towards the end of the movie when Rizzo thinks she's pregnant. She has broken up with Kenickie, although she's still in love with him, and she watches him from a distance as she sings. The song is about her bad reputation leading people to believe that she has no feelings, and is one of the more melancholy songs on the soundtrack but I like it.
7. Cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (1975) is an unusual musical, with some of the story concentrated on gay alien sex! In the opening song, "Science Fiction Double Feature", which of these films is not referenced?

Answer: The Brides of Dracula

The song is sung by a pair of red lips in the opening sequence. The lips belong to Patricia Quinn, who played Magenta in the film, but the voice is that of Richard O'Brien, who played Riff. "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" has been shown continually in certain cinemas since its release.
8. Which of these songs from "Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory" (1971) is the only one that takes lyrics from the actual Roald Dahl book?

Answer: There's No Earthly Way Of Knowing

Roald Dahl (the author of the book on which the film is based) wrote a sequel to his book "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" called "Charlie And The Great Glass Elevator", which was also intended to be filmed. However Roald Dahl disliked "Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory" so much (mostly because of massive changes to the original book) that he refused permission for the sequel to be made.
9. "Fame! I'm gonna live forever!" (1980) - just those words bring so much nostalgia. Remember the leg warmers?! Can you remember who directed this movie musical?

Answer: Alan Parker

As of 2004, this was one of four musical outings for director Alan Parker who also directed "The Commitments", "Bugsy Malone" and "Evita".
10. "Bugsy Malone" (1976) is an odd film - kids playing gangsters with adult singing voices, cream pies firing everywhere and Jodie Foster as the oldest 13 year old that ever lived. Finish this quote from her song, "My Name Is Tallulah". "When they talk about Tallulah you know what they say, no one south of Heaven's gonna treat you finer, Tallulah had her training in _______."

Answer: North Carolina

Sung early on in the film, this is Tallulah's first appearance and the song sets her up to be the seductive 'Gangster's Moll'. None of the children sang their own songs, so this was performed by an adult vocalist, with young Jodie miming during her performance. How many people have performed "Bugsy Malone" as part of a school drama project? You know you all have.
