Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which was Marty McFly's desired vehicle in "Back to the Future" (1985)?

Answer: Toyota 4x4

Marty noticed a black Toyota 4x4 driven on the bed of a truck transporting for the Statler Dealership, in Hill Valley. You could tell the Toyota was a 1985 because it had a solid front axle, and EFI decals on the side. '85 was the last year for solid front, and the first for EFI. You may recall Marty's line from the film, "Check out that four by four! That's hot."

A note on the other possible selections: The BMW was owned by the McFly family in the "corrected" 1985, at the end of the first "Back to the Future", but Marty expressed no specific desire for having one. A Ferrari was never mentioned in the film, and the family sedan did not even exist in Marty's revised 1985.
2. Adam Sandler's character, Longfellow Deeds, provided fleets of what car to his New Hampshire townsfolk at the conclusion of "Mr. Deeds" (2002)?

Answer: Corvettes

Spoiler Note: Deeds received one billion dollars from manservant Emilio Lopez (portrayed by John Turturro) after determining Lopez as the correct heir to Blake Media. Deeds used all or part of this money to purchase Corvettes for Mandrake Falls' inhabitants, but they were selected only in red. Owing to the production year of the film, the particular Corvettes purchased were C5s, an entry in the line which was produced from 1997 to 2004.

They were distinguishable by their smooth fronts, ovular taillight pairs and unusually high back ends. Considering the base prices alone of all options for this question, the Corvette was by far the most expensive vehicle of this sporty American selection.
3. Towards the end of "Coming to America" (1988), this vehicle was used in the royal family's motorcade, once the king and queen reached America. What was it?

Answer: Mercedes-Benz

The royal motorcade of Zamunda included two Mercedes-Benz SEL* editions and one SEL stretch limousine. Prince Akeem's first visual indication of royalty to Lisa McDowell occurred when he borrowed one of the Benz cars to catch up with her on the way to the subway. For a great many of Generations X and Y, this was the first time they had seen a stretched Benz.

* Whether the vehicles used were 420, 450, or 560 SELs has been the subject of some debate, however most contend that owing to the long wheelbase, the 560 SEL was the most probable model used in the film.
4. "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (1989) featured Walter Donovan (played by Julian Glover) offering this fine auto as a gift for the privilege of crossing soil in the Republic of Hatay to uncover the Holy Grail. What was the spoken name given for the automobile?

Answer: Rolls Royce Phantom II

The Sultan receiving this vehicle at his palace in Iskenderun seemed to know more about the vehicle than anyone else there. "Rolls-Royce Phantom Two. 4.3 liter, 30 horsepower, six cylinder engine, with Stromberg Downdraft carburetor. Can go from zero to 100 kilometers an hour in 12.5 seconds. And I even like the color." The car in the film was actually not the Phantom II. It was the Rolls Royce 20/25, produced between 1929 and 1936. So its specs were clearly different from those spoken in the film.

Knowing automobile production dates can also help to sort out this question. This film took place in 1938. The Silver Shadow made its debut in 1965. The Silver Spirit was introduced in 1980. The Wraith nearly snuck into the correct time frame at 1939. The Phantom, however, has been produced from 1925-2008.
5. "I, Robot" (2004) had Will Smith cruising in style in this luxury vehicle. It was actually based on which concept car?

Answer: Audi RSQ

Audi developed the RSQ to suit a design standard for the year 2035 (the given year of the film). This was the first time Audi built a car intentionally for a film - before seeing it in mass production. The car must have appeared to make radical styling departures from then-current models of their line, while still being identifiable as an Audi.

The quad-ringed grille was a dead giveaway to consumers and movie-goers alike. In the movie, the Audi assisted Will Smith's character in unravelling a mystery with negative potential effects for humanity.
6. In "First Daughter" (2004), this was the car Katie Holmes' character, Samantha Mackenzie, wished for and received, as she left for her second semester at college.

Answer: Volkswagen Super Beetle

The car was a lime-green 1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle, with its front wheel scoop sporting mismatched gray paint. While it did not play a vital role in the film (it only appeared in the final scene), the psychological need for first daughter Samantha Mackenzie to have possessed a conveyance of the happily average, college-bound, and most importantly "non-presidential" student, was perfectly covered by this vehicle.

It came complete with a cooler containing sandwiches and hidden beers.
7. "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" (2002) showed Harry and Ron making a hasty departure to catch up with the returning students - who did not miss their train to Hogwarts. They made the journey in the Weasley family car, which "flew" them to school on time. What was the make and model?

Answer: Ford Anglia

The Anglia was a car model released by Ford only for purchase in the United Kingdom. The vehicle used in the film was a Ford Anglia 105E, which was produced from 1959-1967. This edition was supplied a new engine, a 997 cc overhead valve straight-4. This resulted in the breaking of six world records for an under 1000 cc car at the Montlhery circuit.

Considering the Weasleys were not a wealthy magical family, and the fact that "The Chamber of Secrets" was said to have taken place between 1992-1993 (a bit too soon for a car from the 60s to become an expensive classic), the Anglia seems a likely choice for their family car. Not only did Arthur Weasley enchant the vehicle with the ability of flight, but the car could also become invisible, and carry the entire Weasley Family in spite of its formerly non-enchanted interior dimensions. Upon arrival, Ron Weasley promptly crashed the car into the Whomping Willow.
8. "Renaissance Man" (1994) depicted Danny Devito's Princeton-educated character, Bill Rago, tooling around in which fairly basic vehicle?

Answer: Ford Thunderbird

Devito played an advertising executive who lost his job and found virtually all of his assets repossessed, except his car, an early 90s Ford Thunderbird. After a few weeks of unemployment, he landed a teaching gig at an army base, acclimating enlisted mishaps to Shakespeare. Driving up to the base for the first time, he received directions at the army base's gate in complex acronyms and jokingly asked if he could also buy a vowel.
9. Albert Brooks' character, Daniel Miller, faced a premature death in the movie "Defending Your Life" (1991). Which car had he just purchased for "thirty-nine grand"?

Answer: BMW Convertible

The car used in this film is the first luxury vehicle Daniel Miller purchased, in the short history of his life. It was technically a 325iS (2.5 liter) inline 'sport' or convertible. In the auto dealership, Miller was first shown the 750, a much bigger model, and then pointed to his own (smaller) reserved vehicle. "I wish you didn't show me the 750 first." Spoiler: The vehicle came complete with a CD player in the sound system, use of which created the distraction which lead to his collision with an oncoming bus.
10. "The Fast and the Furious" (2001) featured many unique and modified cars. This question is about none of them. What was the the make of the only company vehicle shown from Harry's auto parts store?

Answer: Ford F-150

We saw Paul Walker's character, Brian O'Connor driving a red Ford F-150 company vehicle shortly after he wrecked his Mitsubishi Eclipse in the first race of the movie. The vehicle was apparently used as a parts delivery truck, and wasn't seen much thereafter.
