Sir Michael Caine (b. 1933) played Ebenezer Scrooge in "The Muppets Christmas Carol" (1992). This role came during a lull in his career which might have been a prelude to retirement but instead marked a resurgence. Caine was born to working-class parents and began his lifelong connection with theater by getting a job sweeping up in one.

Kermit is imprisoned in place of his double, Constantine, by Nadya, who is first seen as a senior prison guard but later as the warden. Nadya knows his true identity but is madly in love with him and hopes to win him away from Miss Piggy. "Muppet Treasure Island" charts a course close to the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson but creates a number of roles especially for the Muppet members of the cast. Long John Silver is played by Tim Curry. Curry had no objections to Muppets appearing before him in the billing of the film but insisted that he be "first among humans" which was agreed.

Louis Zorich plays Pete, the chef/owner of the eponymous diner in Manhattan, where Kermit meets the rats led by Rizzo. The film also includes cameos by Art Carney, James Coco, Dabney Coleman, Elliott Gould, Gregory Hines, Mayor Edward I. Koch, Linda Lavin, Liza Minnelli, Joan Rivers, Vincent Sardi, Jr. and Brooke Shields.

It also introduced the Muppet Babies who went on to Saturday-morning television fame. Zorich married Olympia Dukakis in 1962 and once played a Russian Ambassador in the Japanese film "Gammera the Invincible" (1966).

Andie MacDowell appears in "Muppets in Space" (1999) as Shelley Snipes, an anchorwoman. This was the Muppets' first non-musical film. This was also Frank Oz' last film before stepping back from performance. Among the great cameos in this film are F. Murray Abraham, David Arquette, Kathy Griffin, Hulk Hogan, Ray Liotta and Joshua Jackson. MacDowell previously worked with Muppets off-planet in an episode of "Muppets Tonight" broadcast 4 January 1998.

Segel both wrote and starred in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" (2008). The story within the story of Sarah Marshall is that the main character is composing a comedy-rock-opera called "A Taste for Love" which features remarkably Muppet-like characters such as Dracula, Lucy and Dr. Van Helsing. Perhaps the similarity arises from their being created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. About the Muppets, Segel said, "One thing that I think never goes out of style is just purity. Niceness and purity. And the Muppets have never lost that. Kermit especially is just wide-eyed wonder, unblinking. And he can't blink. Which I think probably helps."

"The Muppet Movie" was notable for many reasons; one was the Academy Award nomination for Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher's song "Rainbow Connection". Durning's motion picture roles (more than 200) ranged from silly - "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" (1982), "Tootsie" (1982) - to serious - "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975), "True Confessions" (1981).

Nicky Holiday (Charles Grodin) steals his sister's jewels with the help of three of her models. The Muppets come to save the day (and the jewels). Diana Rigg plays Lady Holiday. She hosted "Mystery!" on PBS 1989-2003. Asked why she took the role in "The Great Muppet Caper", Ms. Rigg responded, "I did it for my daughter, who was passionately in love with Miss Piggy.

She was about five or six, and she came to the studio with a couple of friends to meet Miss Piggy, and she burst into tears when she saw Miss Piggy."

Dominic protects his concealed identity by telling Kermit and the other Muppets that his last name is pronounced, in French, "bahd-JEE." He is in league with the evil Constantine, at least until he attempts to double cross the Kermit look-alike criminal. Ricky Gervais, who plays Dominic, had scenes in the prior "The Muppets" (2011) but they were all cut before release.
