Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What musical instrument was recovered by the submersible?

Answer: coronet

As the submersible crew was still looking for the Titanic, they stumbled upon a horn lodged in the rocks. When Dr. Vogel restored the horn, they found that it was a coronet and that it was once owned by a musician named Graham Farley. Farley was a coronet player onboard the Titanic.

This was according to Seagram's research. In the movie, Seagram said that Farley was once a coronet player on one other White Star ship; the Olympic.
2. What major part of the ship did the Deep Quest come upon, just before they found the ship itself?

Answer: smokestack

As Pitt was exploring in the Deep Quest, he went to the assistance of the Sea Cliff. Sea Cliff's operator stated that they were seeing something on the sonar. As the two subs went over to investigate, they found the remains of the second smokestack, that was missing from the ship. They could tell this by the grating that was at the top of the stack. The smokestack was on it's side.
3. In the meantime, which group of people was trying to get the Byzanium ore?

Answer: Russians

Captain Prevlov wanted to seize the Byzanium and take it back to Russia, to possibly build a Byzanium bomb out of it, to defend Russia from a U.S. attack. The Byzanium was taken from Russian soil and he wanted to be a hero for Russia by reclaiming what was theirs.
4. Compressed air was going to be used to raise the Titanic?

Answer: False

This was another difference between the book and the movie. In the movie, synthetic foam and explosives would be used to unglue the hull from the sea floor. There were so many differences between the book and the movie that Cussler actually prohibited moviemakers from ever doing movies on his famous books, unless Cussler approved of the script and cast of characters to star in the films. "Raise the Titanic" was made in 1980 and the next was made in 2004 ("Sahara").
5. Which submersible got trapped in the wreck?

Answer: Deep Quest

While attempting to remove a wayward hydrozine generator from the remains of the smokestack, the Deep Quest was forced back into the skylight by the weight of the generator. As the crew was attempting to free itself from the skylight, the submersible's batteries overloaded and caused an acid leak inside the submersible.

They had only 6 hours left before they suffocated! And with Gene Seagram onboard the submersible, the situation was serious. As Pitt said, "Seagram picked a lousy day to go sightseeing!"
6. Which method was going to be used to bring up the ship?

Answer: explosives

The original plans were to blow the ship off the bottom with explosives. However, because the Deep Quest was trapped and the crew inside it only had 6 hours to live, it had to be done right away. Pitt suggested using 80 charges with 100 lbs of explosives in each charge. Pitt noticed that Sandecker was shaking his head and asked him why. Sandecker replied, "I'm not shaking my head, I'm shaking all over! Those charges are double what we planned!" Pitt said that if they don't bring up the ship, the crew on the Deep Quest would surely die.

In Pitt's words, they had two chances to die and one to live.
7. What was the name of the support ship that helped out with the salvage crew?

Answer: Carpenter

Again, this was one of the differences between book and movie. The Carpenter was the name of the support ship in the movie. The Carpenter was used to store the submersible and basically be an all-around headquarters while the salvage crew was at sea.

The Mikail Korkov was the name of the Russian ship in both the book and the movie. Its captain had direct orders from Prevlov to blow up the Titanic if the Russian mission failed.
8. Did Captain Prevlov get the Byzanium?

Answer: No

Prevlov attempted to board the ship by saying he would assist during a force 12 storm. Sandecker and Pitt both knew what he was up to, however, and they were waiting for him. They organized the Navy force to give a "surprise package". Pitt's surprise was the presence of Navy submarines, battleships and a few fighter jets. Prevlov, seeing that he was defeated, went back to the Mikail Korkov emptyhanded.
9. When the vault was opened, what was found inside?

Answer: gravel and the body of Arthur Brewster

After the vault was opened on the ship, Seagram nearly stepped on the body of Arthur Brewster who had locked himself inside as the ship was going down. Once all the ore boxes were removed, it was found that none of the boxes held the Byzanium.
10. Pitt realized the Byzanium was in which English town?

Answer: Southby

As Seagram vented his frustration at not finding the Byzanium, Pitt showed him a postcard that depicted a small country church and graveyard in the village of Southby. In the movie and in the book, Brewster's last words were, "Thank God for Southby." Both Pitt and Seagram assumed it was another man, but it was the name of the town that the Byzanium was hidden in.

The movie depicted that the Byzanium was in Jake Hobart's grave. There was a difference between book and movie on this one, too.
11. Whose grave was Seagram checking?

Answer: Jake Hobart's

As the gravediggers went to get the shovels for exhumation, Seagram used his radioactivity meter over the grave fill. Grave fill is dirt which is placed back on the coffin after it is burried. It proved positive in the biggest way. When the one digger asked if Seagram wanted him to dig it up, Seagram thought about it and finally said no.
12. Who played the role of Dirk Pitt?

Answer: Richard Jordan

Richard Jordan was also in the movie "Gettysburg" as Confederate General Louis Armistead. My opinion is that if Richard Jordan lived, he would've made a good actor for the part of Dirk Pitt or Kurt Austin.
13. Who played the role of Admiral Sandecker?

Answer: Jason Robards

Jason Robards played in such movies as "Parenthood" and he also won an Oscar for his role as Washington Post reporter Ben Bradlee in the film "All The President's Men". Anyone reading the book would agree with me that the producers of the movie could not have picked a better person to play the part. Robards fit the role to a T. It's unfortunate that he is also gone.
14. Dana Seagram was a marine biologist.

Answer: No

This is another difference between book and movie. In the movie, Anne Archer played the part of Dana Seagram, who was a newspaper writer for the Washington Star. It was the only supporting actress role in this movie. There were other female roles in this movie as press people, but Archer's was the only major female role here.
15. Finally, can the Titanic actually be raised?

Answer: No

The Titanic is too far gone and rusted out to ever be raised. It also lies in two pieces and is in worse shape than the movie let on. But, it doesn't hurt to fantasize or dream that it will one day make it's first port in New York, 94 years after it set sail from the dock at Southampton. Thank you for taking this quiz and I hope you Titanic enthusiasts enjoyed taking it as much as I enjoyed creating it. Look for more of my quizzes in the future.
