Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film was made up of two separate stories, based on classic tales by Kenneth Grahame and Washington Irving. True or False?

Answer: True

The title of this movie was a bit misleading, because the story about Mr. Toad came first and the story about Ichabod came second. In any case, the movie was based on "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame (focusing on the part of the story dealing with Mr. Toad), followed by Washington Irving's "Tale of the Headless Horseman" (telling of the foibles of Ichabod Crane).
2. Who narrated each story in "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad"?

Answer: Basil Rathbone and Bing Crosby

The stories were narrated by Basil Rathbone, who told the story of Mr. Toad, and Bing Crosby, who told the tale of Ichabod Crane. Neither narrator was seen in the animation. Rathbone was assisted in his retelling by Eric Blore, Colin Campbell and J. Pat O'Malley, and also played the role of the Policeman. Rathbone was probably best remembered for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in many movies.

Bing Crosby did practically all of the voices in his half of the picture. Of course, Crosby sang and did most of the sound effects too. But because he provided all of the entertainment in this story, it is my favorite of the two parts to this film.
3. Which holiday was "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" released for?

Answer: Halloween

Both stories were eerie and played up for fright. After being released together, each was subsequently released as a shorter feature, also for Halloween. Though the original stories were richer, and especially in the case of "The Wind in the Willows", contained more of a plot than what was shown in this double feature, the cleverness of the Disney adaptation and the stunning animation gave adults and children something to enjoy for multiple viewings.
4. Which of the following characters was NOT a good friend of Mr. Toad's?

Answer: Horse

The Mole, Rat and Badger (in this film adaptation), were all good friends of Mr. Toad's. Mr. Toad did have a steed in his employ, but he was not one of his three good friends. There were important horse characters in "The Story of Ichabod and Mr. Toad", but they appeared in the second half of the film, the part about Ichabod, which was based on the "Legend of Sleepy Hollow".
5. What was the thing that Mr. Toad was obsessed with?

Answer: A motorcar

Mr. Toad was always spending too much money and looking for the next new thing. His friends Mole, Rat and Badger were very concerned with his current "must have", and did everything they could think of to stop him from making a huge mistake. They locked him in the house, they had his trustee cut off his allowance, they berated and gave him unwanted advice...

In the end, in Mr. Toad's mind, they left him the only recourse of stealing the car (which he wouldn't do), or trading his home for it!
6. Mr. Toad was initially found guilty of stealing the wonderful red motorcar. True or False?

Answer: True

Though Mr. Toad tried to buy the car by trading the deed to his home for it, the problem was that the vehicle was already stolen property in the first place. Did Mr. Toad steal it? No, and he unwittingly signed over the deed to his mansion to the supposed owner of the car.

Then, Winky, the deceptive tavern owner, lied under oath in court and testified that Mr. Toad had tried to sell him a stolen car. The opposite was true, and Winky took over Mr. Toad's mansion anyway. Luckily, Mr. Toad's friends helped him prove his innocence and get things back to normal in the end.
7. What was the profession of Ichabod Crane?

Answer: Teacher

Ichabod Crane was the new schoolmaster, and one of the few people who was not from the Tarry Town, where he arrived to take over the school. Crane fell in love with the richest and most beautiful girl in the town, and that was the beginning of his troubles!
8. What was the name of the suitor who wanted to protect Katrina Van Tassell from Ichabod?

Answer: Brom Bones

Brom Bones was the most important and most popular person in Tarry Town. He had long assumed that Katrina was his girl, and had outshone all of the others in the town for her affections. Nevertheless, Katrina herself wondered if Brom was really the one for her, and often asked herself if anyone else could make her happier. Ichabod came on the scene at the perfect time for her to get the answers to those questions...
9. Ichabod was more interested in Katrina's money than in Katrina herself. True or False?

Answer: True

There were many indications in the story that Ichabod really only wanted security and money and was not really smitten. Luckily, Brom knew that Ichabod's weakness was his fright, and he got Ichabod to get into an encounter with the Headless Horseman. Bing Crosby's rendition of the part of the story where Ichabod was fleeing from the Headless Horseman was a tour de force.

In the end, no one was sure what happened to Ichabod, all that was known was that he was gone.
10. What did most people in Tarry Town believe had happened to Ichabod?

Answer: The Headless Horseman had gotten him and had stolen his head.

The story of Ichabod ended with the following words:

"Next morning, Ichabod's
hat was found.
And close beside it,
a shattered pumpkin.
But there was no trace
of the schoolmaster.
Shortly thereafter, Brom Bones led
the fair Katrina to the altar.
Rumours persisted that
Ichabod was still alive,
married to a wealthy widow
in a distant county.

But the good Dutch settlers
refused to believe such nonsense.
They knew the schoolmaster
had been spirited away
by the Headless Horseman.
With a hip-hip and a clippity-clop
Looking for a head to swap!"
