Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the comedic actor who helped bring the lead character, a singing and dancing funny man named Hubert Hawkins, to life?

Answer: Danny Kaye

Only Danny Kaye, star of such films as 'Wonder Man' and 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty', could have put such outstanding verve and gentlemanly panache into a single role. Despite his amazing energy, Kaye was only featured in fewer than 30 films during his career.
2. During the film, the gentle Hubert Hawkins takes on the identity of which dashing court jester, famous throughout Europe?

Answer: Giacomo

Giacomo is the King of Jesters, and Jester to the King!

The true Giacomo is played by John Carradine, but he soon gives way to the wild and crazy Danny Kaye version, after being bonked on the head. Kaye stays in his Giacomo disguise throughout most of the film.
3. Glynis Johns is one of the leading ladies of the film. What is the name of the beautiful maid she portrays?

Answer: Maid Jean

Lovely Glynis Johns, also appearing in 'The Seekers', 'The Sword and the Rose' and 'Mary Poppins', was known as 'The Girl with the Upside-Down Eyes', probably because her eyes were so gorgeous. The assertive Johns, as Maid Jean, plays a perfect foil for the sometimes wimpering and self-conscious Hubert Hawkins.
4. Which actress appears as the love-starved and desperate daughter of King Roderick, Princess Gwendolyn?

Answer: Angela Lansbury

Angela Lansbury, who is probably most well-known to modern audiences from her role as Jessica Fletcher in the television series 'Murder, She Wrote', has had quite a long film career. Some of her film roles include: 'The Lady Vanishes', 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks', 'Blue Hawaii' and 'The Long, Hot Summer'.
5. Another key character in the film is a villainous nobleman who has the ear of King Roderick. Played brilliantly by English character actor Basil Rathbone, what is the name of the devious chap?

Answer: Sir Ravenhurst

Basil Rathbone was a regular in some of the greatest costume extravaganzas of the 1930s, for example 'Captain Blood' and 'The Adventures of Robin Hood', before he settled into his most well-known character, namely Sherlock Holmes. He had played Holmes 13 times prior to taking up the role of Ravenhurst in 'The Court Jester', a return to 'medieval times' for Rathbone.
6. There are several classic, comedic dialogues in this film. One involves 'the pellet with the poison in the vessel with the pestle'. In that same dialogue, what is in the 'chalice from the palace'?

Answer: The brew that is true

Unfortunately, the chalice from the palace is broken, so the brew that is true is transferred to the vessel with the pestle. This dialogue occurs just before the scene in which Hubert Hawkins must confront another knight who has challenged him to a joust. The tongue-tying confusion is classic!
7. Ultimately, after some incredibly confusing and exhaustive dialogue, the pellet with the poison is to be found in which container?

Answer: The flagon with the dragon

Continuing from the same dialogue from whence the 'vessel with the pestle', poor Hawkins is utterly confused when Griselda the witch attempts to inform him that there has been a change in the location of the 'pellet with the poison'. Fortunately, it all works out as neither Hawkins or his rival drink from the flagon with the dragon!
8. A witch named Griselda has extraordinary powers, including those that bring other human beings under her control. Griselda hypnotizes Hawkins twice in the film. What is the signal that brings Hawkins in and out of Griselda's control?

Answer: A snap of the fingers

Griselda's machinations, which include making Hawkins out to be a dashing swashbuckler and a fantastic swordsman, allow for some of the most hilarious scenes in the film. Danny Kaye really shines in these scenes where he switches back-and-forth from the meek Hawkins into his Giacomo persona.
9. What color is the pimpernel birthmark, that can be seen on the backside of the true king, a tiny baby?

Answer: Purple

The purple pimpernel is the sign of the true king of England. King Roderick is simply a usurper of the throne. The thrust of the story in 'The Court Jester' is an attempt by a band of secret adventurers to place the true king on the throne.
10. In order for the child to assume his rightful place on the throne, what item has to be stolen by Hawkins and his associates in the royal castle?

Answer: A key

Hawkins and Maid Jean are dispatched by the Black Fox, the head of the secret band of swashbucklers, to steal a key that will allow a secret passageway to be opened. Tremendous hilarity ensues as a result of this simple plot device!
