Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film "CODA" begins with Ruby, her father Frank and her brother Leo working at the family business. What was this business that had her waking up very early in the morning?

Answer: Fishing

Ruby, Frank and Leo Rossi work aboard the ship 'Angela Rose' trying to catch haddock to sell to a local fishing company. As they work the nets and separate the fish from the trash Ruby sings loudly. Their work is difficult and the small amount they receive prompts Leo to tell his father that they should sell directly to customers but he initially rejects the idea. Since Ruby works on the fishing boat early she does not get to change or shower before going to school prompting both another classmate and her mother to tell her that she stinks like fish.
2. Known as 'America's Oldest Seaport', in what coastal city is the film "CODA" set?

Answer: Gloucester, Massachusetts

A permanent fishing outpost was established in 1623 and in 1642 the town was named Gloucester. The city of Gloucester, Massachusetts is located in Essex County which also includes the cities of Salem, Lawrence and Lynn. The city had a population of just under 30,000 per the 2020 census and its main industries were fishing and summer tourism. "CODA" was both filmed and set in Gloucester.
3. What social networking app where you swipe left or right does Leo use at the dinner table that annoys Ruby?

Answer: Tinder

The family is eating a nice, home-cooked meal but Leo is more interested in his possible matches on Tinder. Ruby is upset because she is not allowed to listen to music at the table so she believes Leo shouldn't be allowed to be on Tinder. However, their parents Frank and Jackie enjoy 'assisting' Leo with his matches and provide advice on what direction he should swipe. Their reasoning is that they can all participate in Leo's Tinder usage whereas only Ruby can enjoy the music since Leo, Frank and Jackie are all deaf.

The Tinder app was released in 2012 and after registering some initial preferences the app shows the user possible matches. If two possible matches both swipe right indicating that they're interested they can then communicate via text on the app.
4. Ruby ends up picking choir as her school elective. What popular song is she unable to sing her first day in the class?

Answer: Happy Birthday to You

The choir teacher, Bernardo Villalobos, has all of the students line up and one by one they sing "Happy Birthday to You" so he can determine if they have a tenor or alto voice. Ruby is one of the last ones to go but she gets anxiety and is unable to sing any of the song and she runs out.

The main reason she joined choir as an elective was that she had noticed a boy she liked had registered for the class.
5. Leo desires to be accepted by other colleagues in his industry. He decides to hang out with them but ends up getting in a fight. What prompted this fight?

Answer: Another guy bumped him spilling beer on him.

After the fisherman had returned back to shore they all went to a local pub and invited Frank and Leo. Frank declines but Leo goes with them. While at the bar another guy bumps into Leo knocking over his beer and doesn't apologize when Leo calls him out for it and he then makes fun of Leo's use of sign language. Leo gets a black eye during the fight but he gets the last laugh as his bravery impresses one of the bartenders who just happens to be Ruby's best friend Gertie.
6. Miles and Ruby are picked by Mr. Villalobos to represent the school singing a duet to "You're All I Need to Get By". What unique technique do they use when they first practice at Ruby's house?

Answer: They sing the song with their backs to each other.

When Miles goes to Ruby's house he is impressed by her turntable and record collection. Miles play the guitar when they practice as Mr. Villalobos recommends it for his pacing. At first they are facing each other but Ruby has a hard time singing and concentrating because she feels awkward and doesn't know where to look. Miles suggests that they stand back to back while they sing and they end up sounding much better.
7. After Miles tells one of his friends something personal about Ruby's family she shuns him for a long time. What activity do they do together to mend their friendship?

Answer: Cliff dive

Ruby ignores Miles after he tells one of his friends that Ruby's father had given him and Ruby a sign language description about safe sex through non-verbal gestures. This friend ended up spreading what had happened and other kids at school made gestures to Ruby. Eventually Miles texts Ruby asking what he can do to make it up to her.

She takes him to a beautiful lake and tells him he has to jump into the water. Their second cliff dive is from a height of 40 feet above the water. They eventually share a kiss while balancing on a log in the water.
8. The school's seasonal choir concert is a great success and Ruby gives an excellent duet performance. Unfortunately Ruby's deaf family could not fully appreciate it. What does Ruby's father request that she do once they get home?

Answer: Sing him the duet.

Cleverly the film's production crew decided that while Ruby and Miles are singing the duet their voices and all sounds would be muted to show what it may be like for deaf individuals at a concert. When the family gets home Ruby's father seems sad so she asks him what's going on.

He asks her what the song she sang was about and if she could sing it for him. While singing he feels her vocal vibrations to better appreciate her abilities. Earlier in the film it is mentioned that rap is his favorite genre of music as the use of bass in the songs helps him feel the vibrations and beat.
9. Mr. Villalobos assists Ruby in both applying and auditioning to a great college within Ruby's state. What was this music college that Ruby gets accepted to?

Answer: Berklee College of Music

For Ruby's audition to Berklee College of Music located in Boston, Massachusetts she sang the song "Both Sides, Now" by Joni Mitchell. During her audition her family sneaked up into the rafters to see her. When she saw them up there Ruby performed in sign language while she sang so her deaf family could know what words she was singing.

It was an emotional moment for Ruby and her family when she gets accepted to the school. The driving distance is only about 38 miles but it was the first time that Ruby had lived away from home.
10. The cast of "CODA" that portrayed the Rossi family included three deaf individuals and one hearing individual. Which of the following cast members played the only hearing member of the Rossi family in the film?

Answer: Emilia Jones

Emilia Jones is a hearing actress who was born in London in 2002. One of her major roles before "CODA" was in the first season of the Netflix drama "Locke & Key" which premiered in 2020. In "CODA" Emilia Jones played the role of Ruby Rossi. Troy Kotsur, Marlee Matlin and Daniel Durant are all deaf actors that starred in "CODA" as Ruby's father (Frank), mother (Jackie) and brother (Leo).

Other credited cast members of the film included Eugenio Derbez as Bernardo Villalobos, Amy Forsyth as Gertie and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo as Miles.
