Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most people instantly recognise Rubber Duck as the CB radio handle of Kris Kristofferson's character in "Convoy", but do you remember the character's real name?

Answer: Martin Penwald

Released in 1978, "Convoy" was based on a hit song from 1975, also called "Convoy", and sung by C.W. McCall.
The film tells us the story of how Kris Kristofferson, as 'Rubber Duck', Martin Penwald, finds himself a victim of the corrupt sheriff, 'Dirty' Lyle Wallace. He then gets the better of him in a truckstop brawl, and then finds himself at the head of a convoy of trucks running for the Mexican border to escape Wallace's revenge.
We find out Duck's real name when the Governor of New Mexico flies out to the convoy in a helicopter and tries to parlay with Duck. He uses a loud speaker to address "Mr. Martin Penwald" which causes some amusement for the other characters.
2. In "Convoy", the corrupt sheriff 'Dirty' Lyle Wallace was played by Ernest Borgnine. What was his character's CB handle in the film?

Answer: Cottonmouth

A cottonmouth, also known as a copperhead and a moccasin, is a venomous snake common to the eastern United States. Its bite can be fatal, and it has a habit of 'lying in wait' for prey to pass by, rather like Sheriff Lyle in the film.
One of the most memorable scenes in the film has Sheriff Wallace atop an armoured car, using a machine gun to explode Rubber Duck's truck as it crosses a bridge, near the end of the film. A spectacular explosion and the demolition of the bridge lead us to believe that the Duck is dead, and it is only at the very end of the film that we find out he actually managed to escape the fireball.
Ernest Borgnine won an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in the film "Marty", which was released in 1955. His performance in the TV series "ER" also saw him nominated for an Emmy Award in 2009, when he was 92 years old.
3. Who directed the film "Convoy"?

Answer: Sam Peckinpah

Sam Peckinpah is famous both as a film and television director, and is renowned for the violence of many of his works.
"Convoy" was the final film to be directed by him in the 1970s, and was only followed by "Jinxed!" (on which he was the stunts director) and "The Osterman Weekend" in 1982 and 83 respectively, before his death in 1984.
4. During the fight at the truck stop diner, Rubber Duck and his friends handcuff Sheriff Lyle to something - what do they cuff him to?

Answer: Counter stool

Lyle is enraged when he realises he is cuffed to the support leg of a bar stool at the diner counter. He draws his gun and tries to shoot through his cuff when Violet, one of the waitresses, simply removes the seat of the stool so he can slide the cuff bracelet off the top of the leg.
Lyle swears he will get his revenge on the Duck, for his humiliation, and sets out in pursuit of the truckers.
5. In "Convoy", the character Bob is renamed Pig Pen in jest by Rubber Duck and Spider Mike because he is hauling a load of pigs and they smell bad. What is his usual CB handle?

Answer: Love Machine

In "Convoy", the character Pig Pen/Love Machine is played by Burt Young who also played Paulie Pennino in the Oscar winning film "Rocky" in 1976. The doors of Pig Pen's truck in "Convoy" say "Paulie Hauling".
One has to pay attention to realise that Love Machine is actually called Bob; Rubber Duck calls him by name two or three times during the film, and implies they are old friends who have known each other a long time. Bob announces himself over the CB radio as Love Machine, but Spider Mike just laughs and complains about the smell from his trailer as he is behind it. This is when Bob is renamed Pig Pen for the duration of their trip.
The best scene during the film to see the "Paulie Hauling" badges on the truck doors is when the truckers have liberated Spider Mike from Trucker's Hell by bringing down the roof.
6. As Sheriff Lyle chases Rubber Duck and his friends, he manages to drive his police car off the road, through the air, and crash it through a large roadside sign board. What does it say on this sign?

Answer: Take A Friend to Church

Altogether Duck and his trucker friends cause the wreckage of at least eight police patrol cars during their journey, but Sheriff Lyle will not give up. He is determined to "make them pay" and pursues them doggedly no matter how much damage is caused along the way. Eventually of course, Lyle "wins" a somewhat Pyhrric victory when Duck's truck is blown up completely, taking a bridge with it. The sign that Lyle crashes through is outside a church by the road.

As Lyle emerges from the remains of his car, all the truckers drive off laughing at his plight. Duck does have a pang of conscience though, and uses his CB to check that Lyle is alright and ask if he is injured or needs assistance.
7. As the trucks head for the state line between Arizona and New Mexico, the Governor of New Mexico comes in a helicopter to talk to Rubber Duck. What is his name?

Answer: Haskins

Governor Haskins and his advisors realise that since it is an election year, the truckers could be big vote winners if he handles the publicity around the convoy just right. First he overflies the convoy in a helicopter, accompanied by Lyle, and then he meets the truckers in person at a camp site he has arranged for them.
He basically tells Duck "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" and offers to take Duck to Washington with him.
Governor Haskins is then left bewildered when Duck takes off, initially alone, to rescue Spider Mike from Trucker's Hell.
8. In the film "Convoy", Sheriff Lyle locks one of Rubber Duck's friends in a Texan jail, as bait to get Duck to come and rescue him. Who is this friend?

Answer: Spider Mike

Spider Mike leaves the relative safety of the convoy to rush home to be with his wife as she has their baby. Sheriff Lyle lies in wait and jails Mike in the infamous "Trucker's Hell" on trumped up charges, then beats him up badly.
A sympathetic janitor at the jail gets on the CB radio and passes the word along; when Duck hears what has happened he rushes to the rescue along with several other truckers, and they liberate Mike in spectacular scenes of the destruction of the small town jail.
Spider Mike was played by Franklyn Ajaye, who is also a comedian known as "The Jazz".
9. In the film "Convoy", the doors of Rubber Duck's truck say "R.D. Trucking" followed by the name of his home town. Where is this?

Answer: Albuquerque

All the places listed are in the State of New Mexico.
When Malissa (Ali McGraw's character) asks about his family, Duck tells her that Albuquerque is his home town, that he has two children that he "sees when he can", and that they live with their mother. Other than those few remarks he is very reticent about his personal life, although we know from the scenes outside the diner that he is having a relationship with Violet, the truck stop waitress.
10. At the end of "Convoy", we see Rubber Duck taking part in his own funeral procession. What is his wisecracking last line of dialogue? (said to Ali McGraw's character as she realises he is alive after all.)

Answer: "You ever see a duck couldn't swim?"

Duck is riding with the Reverend Joshua and his Church of the Wayward Stranger, mentioned in the original 1975 C.W. McCall "Convoy" song as "Eleven long haired friends of Jesus in a chartreuse micro-bus", when we see him at his own funeral procession. This is when we realise that he wasn't killed in the fireball from his load of explosives after all.
Duck's line about swimming implies that he somehow managed to get out of the cab of his burning truck once it was in the river, and swim ashore somewhere out of sight.
