Question 1 of 10
1. One of the most dominant of the One Billion and One Dalmatians at Splash's Rest Home for Pampered Pooches arrived with the number 49 on his collar - indeed some would say he bosses all the others around. Question 2 of 10
2. As a birthday treat, Kyle, the lowliest (and frankly, dimmest) of the kennel boys at Splash's Rest Home for Pampered Pooches, was given a chance to name one of our One Billion and One Dalmatians. He looked at the number on one collar and promptly named the dog "Heinz Beans". What was the number? Hint

Question 3 of 10

4. Kyle the kennel boy is not the brightest spark at Splash's Rest Home for Pampered Pooches, and he took it seriously when we suggested that he should count our One Billion and One Dalmatians just to be sure none were lost. If he took one second to count each dog, how long, roughly, would he take to count the lot? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Sometimes we at Splash's Rest Home for Pampered Pooches think that Kyle the dimwitted kennel boy has too much time on his hands. He worked out that at an average length of four feet, One Billion and One Dalmatians laid nose to outstretched tail would reach a fair distance. How far? Hint

Last week he read that the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich had ordered a new yacht costing $1.2bn. He started to work out how many coats from our One Billion and One Dalmatians he would have to sell to Cruella de Vil at $25 apiece to buy that yacht. How many was it? Hint

Question 7 of 10

Question 8 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the most dominant of the One Billion and One Dalmatians at Splash's Rest Home for Pampered Pooches arrived with the number 49 on his collar - indeed some would say he bosses all the others around. We named him after a country that sits on one side of the 49th parallel. What is that name?

Answer: America

A long stretch of the border between the USA and Canada follows the 49th parallel, though some parts of the USA are north of the line and some parts of Canada are south. The 49th parallel was chosen in 1812 as a convenient point at which to divide the British parts of north America, that is Canada, from the new United States of America.

The USA has more territory north of the line than Canada has south, but two of Canada's biggest cites, Toronto and Montreal, lie south of the line.

Answer: 57

"57 Varieties" was an advertising slogan used by the Heinz food company. H. J. Heinz was founded in 1869 in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania. The slogan "Heinz 57 Varieties" was chosen because the numbers 5 and 7 were considered lucky by the founder.
3. At Splash's Rest Home for Pampered Pooches, it quickly became obvious what name we were going to give to number 186,000 of our One Billion And One Dalmatians. What is that name?

Answer: Speed Of Light

Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. If a beam of light started off from the sun at noon, it would arrive on earth 8.3 minutes later. The only thing faster than light is Kyleisalive leaving a bar when told "it's your round".

Answer: 31 years

One Billion is also written as 10 to the power of nine, or 31.7 years in seconds.
5. Sometimes we at Splash's Rest Home for Pampered Pooches think that Kyle the dimwitted kennel boy has too much time on his hands. He worked out that at an average length of four feet, One Billion and One Dalmatians laid nose to outstretched tail would reach a fair distance. How far?

Answer: Thirty times around the equator

Bear with me, mathematicians, four feet multiplied by 1bn equals 4,000,000,000 feet, which equals 757,575 miles. The circumference of the earth at the equator is (just under) 25,000 miles. Twenty-five thousand miles multiplied by 30 equals 757,000 miles. (Please, pedants, allow me some artistic licence and do not quibble about the length of a Dalmatian.

The breed statistics say that a body length of 24 inches is about as big as they get. I'm adding another 24 inches for tail and head.)
6. There is a greedy streak in the head of Kyle the kennel boy at Splash's Rest Home for Pampered Pooches. Last week he read that the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich had ordered a new yacht costing $1.2bn. He started to work out how many coats from our One Billion and One Dalmatians he would have to sell to Cruella de Vil at $25 apiece to buy that yacht. How many was it?

Answer: 48,000,000

At 170 metres long, the 'Eclipse' was built in Germany. It was built with landing pads for two helicopters, and a docking bay for a mini submarine. Newspaper reports even claimed it had a special defence system to block the digital lenses of snooping paparazzi.
7. Not a lot of people people know this, but dogs easily fall asleep while being read to. Kyle the kennel boy has been reading the book "Billion Dollar Brain" to the One Billion and One Dalmatians at Splash's Rest Home for Pampered Pooches. Who starred in the movie version?

Answer: Michael Caine

"Billion Dollar Brain" was a Harry Palmer adventure from the pen of one of Britain's top espionage writers, Len Deighton. Ken Russell directed the 1967 movie, which starred Michael Caine, Karl Malden and Ed Begley. I hope you liked the little Michael Caine reference in the question. For many years it was said that Caine's catch phrase was "Not a lot of people know that".

He eventually owned up that he had never said it, but Peter Sellers had invented it and attributed it to him. Caine had a distinctive voice and many impressionists use the phrase in their act.
8. Ever since those One Billion and One Dalmatians were dropped off at Splash's Rest Home for Pampered Pooches, Kyle the kennel boy developed a fascination for the word "billion" He's a bit of a trivia buff, so one of the questions he asked at the Thursday night quiz was which was the first movie ever to gross more than $1bn? What is the correct answer?

Answer: Titanic

Made in 1997, "Titanic" was the first movie to recoup more than $1bn at the box office. "The Dark Knight" (2008); "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" (2003); and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" have also appeared in the billionaire club.
9. One Billion and One Dalmatians eat a lot of food here at Splash's Rest Home for Pampered Pooches. At $1 a head each week, the food bill we paid in summer 2009 came to $1bn (WalMart gave us $1 off for bulk buying). Which of these packages could we have bought instead?

Answer: Three Airbus A380s

Those Airbuses would come in at $317m each; the Rollers at $400,000 each; the Hellfires at $70,000 each and the Abrams at about $4.3m each. (Prices current when this quiz was written). Note that while all the prices may change, it is unlikely that any of the three "wrong" answers will ever match the price of the right answer. (I was tempted to put Snickers chocolate bars as a wrong answer, but that would have been silly, wouldn't it?)
10. The worst thing about having to look after One Billion And One Dalmatians here at Splash's Rest Home for Pampered Pooches is the noise when they howl. They particularly howl when Kyle the dimwitted kennel boy starts to sing "Billion dollar baby/Rubber little lady, slicker than a weasel". Who released a single and album called "Billion Dollar Babies"?

Answer: Alice Cooper

Released in 1973, "Billion Dollar Babies" is reckoned to be one of the best early Alice Cooper albums. It reached Number One in the Billboard album charts, and produced four singles. The title track peaked at number 57 in the charts.
