Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who plays Christopher Emmanuel 'Manny' Balestrero?

Answer: Henry Fonda

The part of Manny, played by Henry Fonda, is a role well-suited for him, as his real personality shown through in the character. Henry Fonda played a lot of strong but unassuming, silent types with honesty, stamina, and courage, such as his character in "Grapes of Wrath".
2. Where does Manny work, and what is his profession?

Answer: At The Stork Club, as a bass fiddle player in a band

The sequences at The Stork Club were filmed on location. There is a thank you at the end of the movie for the use of The Stork Club.
3. What kind of gambling does Manny like to fantasize about?

Answer: Horse Racing

Manny likes to buy the newspaper and go to his favorite coffee shop, where he sits with his coffee and toast, and picks his favorite horses of the day. He rarely actually goes to the track.
4. What are the names of Manny's two sons?

Answer: Bob and Greg

He enjoys seeing his boys when he can. He gives them both music lessons, as time permits, before going to work at night.
5. Who plays Manny's wife, Rose?

Answer: Vera Miles

Vera Miles of "Psycho" fame, is another standout as the mentally ill wife, who has a nervous breakdown. She cannot handle the nightmare that unfolds with her husband being wrongly accused of a crime. They face a number of setbacks, including two possible alibi witnesses that they find out are dead. She breaksdown at this point and Manny must seek treatment for her.
6. Why does Manny want to borrow money on his insurance policy?

Answer: To get his wife's wisdom teeth out

Rose has four impacted wisdom teeth, and they do not have dental insurance. They need to raise $400 to pay for the dental surgery. Manny has borrowed on his own life insurance policy before but never on hers.
7. What is the name of the insurance office where Manny goes to borrow on the policy?

Answer: Associated Life of New York

Manny goes into the insurance office. He approaches a woman working there, who is standing behind a counter. Immediately, there is an uncomfortable vibe from the woman. As she stares at him, he reaches inside his coat for the insurance policy. She reacts as if he was going to pull out a gun, instead of an insurance policy.
8. What do the women at the insurance office think that he did?

Answer: Robbed their office twice

They are so sure that Manny is the robber, that they can barely handle themselves. Another woman is forced by the others to take a look at him, and she acts like she is going to faint. This behavior indicates how sure that they are that it is him.
9. After Manny leaves the insurance company, the women call the police, and file a report. The police go to Manny's house, and wait for him to come home. They watch him walk up to his doorstep, and call his name. What name do they call him?

Answer: Chris

They approach him at his front door before he is able to enter the house. The detectives tell him to come downtown with them for questioning about some matter. He asks if he can go tell his wife but they won't let him. They assure him that he can call her later. Manny does not understand any of this but tries to remain calm, and trust the detectives.
10. The detectives take a sample of Manny's handwriting by having him print the note that the robber used at the insurance office. What mistake does Manny make that is identical to the real robber's note?

Answer: Instead of writing cash "drawer", he spells cash "draw"

The detectives dictate the note to Manny, so he does not see it himself. The fact that Manny makes the same mistake with the word "drawer", by leaving off the same two letters, is remarkable and sort of seals Manny's fate at this point.
