Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1953 historical epic, with an all-star cast of Marlon Brando, James Mason and John Gielgud, includes one of the most famous acts of betrayal, as the victim's toga-clad best friend literally sticks the knife in?

Answer: Julius Caesar

Based on 'The Tragedy of Julius Caesar' by William Shakespeare, the film centres more on the political machination of Marcus Brutus and Mark Antony in ancient Rome, indeed Brutus has four times more lines than the eponymous Caesar. The classic line of 'Et tu, Brute?', literally 'and you, Brutus?', has become a common quotation concerning acts of the utmost betrayal. I hope he wasn't wearing his best toga!
2. Marlon Brando was again involved in a spot of subordinate betrayal in which 1962 movie, when, alongside Richard Harris and the rest of the crew, he rose up and gave Trevor Howard his comeuppance for being a less than effective man-manager?

Answer: Mutiny on the Bounty

The film centres on the mutinous actions of some of the crew of HMS Bounty, led by Fletcher Christian (Marlon Brando), who decide that, on balance, life on the idyllic island of Tahiti is preferable to the punishing life on board ship. Although Captain Bligh is not portrayed in a favourable light, his actions after the mutiny were fairly impressive. Equipped with just a pocket watch and a quadrant, he navigated the remaining loyal crew in a seven-metre open launch on a 47-day voyage, covering over 3,600 nautical miles, to reach the Dutch East Indies and report the mutiny.
3. Clearly acts of betrayal are not limited to planet Earth. Which 2005 film sees Hayden Christensen succumb to the lure of the dark side, resulting in the death of Samuel L Jackson's character?

Answer: Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

Set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, this is the ultimate tale of betrayal and final redemption. After Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christian) assists Chancellor Palpatine in bumping off Jedi Master Mace Windu (Samuel L Jackson), he goes on to massacre all of the Jedi in the Jedi Temple including the 'younglings'. Probably not a viable candidate for the Baby Sitter of the Year award!
4. Acts of betrayal and treachery are not limited to humankind. Which popular, 1994 animated movie includes a case of fratricide, aided by a stampede of wildebeest?

Answer: The Lion King

The prize of becoming King is enough for the loathsome Scar, voiced by Jeremy Irons, to engineer the death of his brother Mufasa (James Earl Jones) and then convince Simba, the young lion cub and heir-apparent, that it was all his fault. This is what you get when you allow an animation studio to rework William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' with an Elton John/Tim Rice soundtrack and set it in the African savannah.
5. Betrayal of loved ones is fertile ground for movie makers. Which 1949 Cecil B Demille classic centres on the male character being betrayed by his femme fatale in the form of a decent haircut?

Answer: Samson and Delilah

The 1949 version of this biblical tale included Hedy Lamarr, Victor Mature and Angela Lansbury and ends with Samson bringing the the roof down. For me though, the unsung star was the plucky donkey's jawbone which was magnificent in accounting for the slaying of an entire army of 1,000 Philistines. That's what you get for a lack of culture, refinement and knowledge of the arts!
6. Which excellent Clint Eastwood film, set during World War II, involves a plot to identify a devious traitor within the Allied military staff?

Answer: Where Eagles Dare

A true classic, with more twists and turns than the Kama Sutra, this war film centres on a US Army Ranger (Clint Eastwood) and a British Army Major (Richard Burton) tracking down an establishment mole. Eventually the good guys succeed in uncovering the betrayal and treachery of the duplicitous Patrick Wymark.

The final scene sees Wymark's character 'doing the decent thing', jumping to his death from a military transport plane.
7. Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck both starred in this 2007 film which involves a classic case of treachery and leadership change?

Answer: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

There are very few surprises for audiences, with the broad plot of the film nicely summed up in the film's title! Having starred together in the 'Ocean's Eleven' trilogy, Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck swapped the lights of Las Vegas for the wilds of Alberta and Manitoba to film the tale of Jesse James and his underling gang member, Robert Ford.

The movie was adapted from a novel by Ron Hansen, which suggested that James psychologically manipulated Ford into his ultimate actions, in order to guarantee James legendary status after his death. I think I'd rather settle for a nice long retirement in anonymity.
8. Mel Gibson starred in which 1999 film, about a man betrayed by his wife and his best friend, who goes to extreme lengths to reclaim $70,000 which was taken from him?

Answer: Payback

With Mel Gibson at his brooding and bloodied best, this is probably not a film for the squeamish. The movie was based on the crime novel 'The Hunter' by Donald E Westlake, which was also the source of the 1967 film 'Point Blank' staring Lee Marvin. The director, Brian Helgeland, released a director's cut with a revised ending in 2006. Unlike 'Blade Runner', it doesn't centre on whether the lead is an android or not, and Mel Gibson still ends up with the cash and the 'broad'.
9. Bringing allegations of double-crossing to a contemporary corporate setting, which Jesse Eisenberg film had the tag-line 'You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies'?

Answer: The Social Network

In addition to Jesse Eisenberg, the film also stars Justin Timberlake and Andrew Garfield. Based on 'The Accidental Billionaires' by Ben Mezrich, the movie is an account of the origins of the Facebook behemoth and the resultant legal wrangling between various Harvard alumni on who should get a cut of the loot.
10. Sometimes the gravest acts of betrayal are the most subtle. In which 2004 Jim Caviezel film is the act of treachery sealed with a kiss?

Answer: The Passion of the Christ

Et tu, Judas? Mel Gibson was behind the camera this time, as Producer, Director and Screenwriter - although he probably had some assistance with the Aramaic script. The film follows the hours from the moment of Judas Iscariot's kiss identifying Jesus to the Romans, through to the resurrection. Of course there was not such a good ending for Judas who, according to the Gospel of Matthew, ended up committing suicide by hanging himself.
