Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Run-DMC, in their fun and farcical "You Be Illin'" sing "(To)day you won a ticket to see Doctor J/ Front row seat (in free!) no pay." We all know that Doctor J is the remarkable Julius Erving, but do you know the mascot of his college team?

Answer: Minutemen

Dr. J was an All-American for the University of Massachusetts Minutemen from 1968-1971 before he made a name for himself with the Virginia Squires and the New York Nets of the old ABA and the Phildelphia 76ers of the NBA. He was a 5-time ABA all-star and an 11-time NBA all-star. One of the all-time greats!
2. "You're a loaded gun/ There's nowhere to run/ No one can save me, the damage is done/ Shot through the heart, and you're to blame/ You give love a bad name." Bon Jovi compares his hurtful lover to a gun. What rhetorical device does he employ here?

Answer: metaphor

A metaphor is a rhetorical device in which one thing is said to be another dissimilar thing. It differs from the simile in that the simile uses the words "like" or "as" (You're like a loaded gun). Either way Jon Biongiovi (his real name) should stay away from that dangerous girl!
3. When Hall and Oates sang "I'm down on my daydream/ All that sleepwalk should be over by now/ I know" in their hit "You Make My Dreams," I wonder if they knew that the scientific term for sleepwalking is ________________.

Answer: Somnambulism

Somnambulism is more prevalent in children than in adults, and 5-15% of children are reported to have episodes. Sleepwalkers can actually answer questions put to them, and if they aren't awakened, rarely remember anything of the incident. Might be a good way to learn the dirt about your big brother!
4. Dead or Alive had one hit in "You Spin Me 'Round." The lyrics went like this: "You spin me right round, baby/ Right round like a record, baby/ Right Round round round." The question is this: How many revolutions per minute does a properly tuned long playing record make?

Answer: 33 1/3 rpm

Singles were 45 rpm records and 78's were played on the old Victrolas. Now if we could just get the stylus unstuck!
5. The Bangles had a hit with the weird "Walk Like an Egyptian." One of the lines runs, "All the Japanese with their Yen/ The party boys call the Kremlin." What is the bricked expanse just outside the eastern wall of the Kremlin?

Answer: Red Square

Moscow's Red Square was the site of many May Day parades in which the Soviet Union displayed to the world its military might. However, the Square, originally called the Torg, was a marketplace as early as the 15th Century.
6. Dire Straits tries to trick us when they sing, "Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies/ Be-Bop-A-Lula, Baby What I Say/ Here comes Johnny singing I Gotta Woman/ Down in the tunnels, trying to make it pay." Johnny didn't record these songs, but who had a smash hit with "Be-Bop-a-Lula"?

Answer: Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps

Gene "Vincent" Craddock supposedly wrote this song while convalescing in an Army hospital. It was his biggest hit. "Be-Bop-A-Lula, she's my baby/ Be-Bop-A-Lula I don't mean maybe/ Be-Bop-A-Lula sheeee's my babydoll."
7. Eddie Money asked his romantic interest, "If I could walk on water/ Would believe in me?" Whom did Jesus ask to walk on water with him?

Answer: Peter

From Matthew, Ch. 14: "Peter stepped down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, 'Lord, save me!' Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, 'You of little faith, why did you doubt?"'"
8. Was, Not Was had a little fun with their only hit "Walk the Dinosaur." One line runs, "The sun was spitting fire, the sky was blue as ice/ I felt a little tired, so I watched Miami Vice." Who actually wrote the theme song for the popular detective show?

Answer: Jan Hammer

The "Miami Vice Theme" was voted the best theme song of the last 50 years by readers of "TV Guide." Faltermeyer wrote the theme to "Beverly Hills Cop," Mancini the theme to the "Pink Panther." Now to put on my pastel, cropped-sleeve jacket and hunt down some drug lords. Right, Sonny?
9. In their hit "Wind of Change," the Scorpions sing, "I follow the Moskva/ Down to Gorky Park/ Listening to the wind of change." Who was this Gorky guy that they named a park after him?

Answer: A Russian writer

Maxim Gorky was a Russian author, a founder of the socialist realism literary method and a political activist. He was a friend of Lenin's but later ran afoul of the Communists and claimed that Lenin and Stalin had no concept of human rights (boy, was he right!).

He was an expatriate for years but returned when Stalin invited him. Later Gorky found the displeasure of Stalin once again in 1934 and was placed under house arrest until his death in 1936.
10. Finally, Sting likes the mythical and metaphysical in his lyrics, and this little piece from The Police's "Wrapped Around Your Finger" is no exception: "You consider me the young apprentice/ Caught between Scylla and Charybdis." Just who are Scylla and Charybdis?

Answer: Two sea monsters

Scylla--a sea nymph--was transformed into a monster with 12 feet and 6 heads because she loved the same man as Circe, daughter of Helios, the Sun. Charybdis sat on the opposite from Scylla in the Strait of Messina. She would swallow huge amounts of water three times a day and then spit it back out causing whirlpools. They wrecked ships and ate men as they passed.

It was the Sirens who lured sailors to their destruction with their beautiful songs.
