Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which colour completes the title of this 1969 album whose last two words can be reversed to reveal the band's name? "In the Court of the _____ King"

Answer: Crimson

The band is King Crimson, a progressive rock outfit from England and the above was their debut album. Unlike most albums of the progressive rock genre at the time this one departed from the heavy blues influences to incorporate strong elements of jazz and classical music.

Despite only receiving a lukewarm reception upon release the album is now considered one of the most influential of its time. The band formed in 1968 and has had in excess of twenty members during its lifespan. The mainstay of the band has been its founder Robert Fripp.

The band would release thirteen albums to 2003 and provide influence to similar minded acts such as Genesis and Yes.
2. The Native American band Redbone had a hit in 1971 with which of the following voodoo inspired songs?

Answer: The Witch Queen of New Orleans

Brothers Patrick and "Lolly" Vasquez-Vegas formed the band in 1969, taking their band name from a Cajun term for "half-breed". "Witch Queen of New Orleans", which deals with the former voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau gave the band its first international success.

It reached number two on Billboard's Hot 100 in the US, number two on the UK Singles Chart and figured prominently in the Australian Top Ten. The band's biggest success would arrive in 1974 with their release of "Come and Get Your Love".
3. The song "We Can't Be Beaten" was a hit for which Australian band?

Answer: Rose Tattoo

Commonly referred to as the "Tatts" and led by Angry Anderson, the band formed in Sydney in 1976 and soon become a favourite of the "pub rock" scene. Their debut single "Bad Boy for Love" followed soon after in 1977. It only charted at number 19 on the local charts but it set the tone for the singles to follow such as "Rock & Roll Outlaw" and the above named "We Can't Be Beaten" which was released in 1982.

The band broke up in 1987 only to reform for a short period in 1993 to support the Australian tour of Guns N' Roses who had cited Rose Tattoo as an influence in their early days.
4. The 1989 album "A New Flame", spawned the US number one hit "If You Don't Know Me By Now". Who recorded it?

Answer: Simply Red

Manchester born Mick Hucknall formed Simply Red in 1985 and their initial success came through the cover of an old Valentine Brothers' song called "Money's too Tight (to Mention)". Subsequent singles, over the next few years, would fail to build on this foundation.

It wasn't until 1989 and the release of "A New Flame" that international success would come to them. This time the Launchpad was another cover track, the above name "If You Don't Know Me By Now" which had previously been a hit for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.

The band's success would peak over the next six years on the back of strong singles such as "Something's Got Me Started", "Stars" and "Fairground".
5. "Play That Funky Music" was a hit for Red Cherry.

Answer: False

The band was Wild Cherry, formed and fronted by Rob Parissi. Sadly, the band will only be remembered for this one hit but (boy) wasn't it a big one? The track would become one of the biggest selling songs of the 1970s and it would eventually be listed on Billboard's list of the "Greatest Songs of All Time". No other release from the band would go on to bother the US Top Forty charts.
6. Adam Levine leads which band that recorded the album "Songs About Jane" in 2002?

Answer: Maroon 5

"Songs About Jane" was the band's debut album and it sold over ten million copies on the back of hit singles such as "Harder to Breathe", "This Love" and "She Will Be Loved". The band originally formed in 1994 under the name Kara's Flowers and had released two albums that met with, at best, lukewarm success and saw the band members move apart.

They reformed in 2001 with a new image and a change in musical direction and the rest, as they say, is history. Not only did "Songs About Jane" provided the band with a launch into international stardom it helped them earn a Grammy as "Best New Artist" in 2005.
7. Which cool band reached number seven on Billboard's Hot 100 in the USA in 1970 with their rendition of "House of the Rising Sun"?

Answer: Frijid Pink

Frijid Pink's career stagnated as their first two singles failed to gain much of a market, however, their heavily distorted guitar version of "House of the Rising Sun", which was originally recorded purely as an album filler, soon put paid to that. The single sold in the millions, hitting the Top Ten on Billboard's Hot 100, the UK Singles Charts and Canada's Canadian RPM Magazine's Charts.

Their rising (no pun) popularity saw them sharing bills with The Stooges and MC5 and, on one occasion, they had Led Zeppelin, in their early days, open the show for them at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit.
8. "Sugar Baby Love" stayed at number one on the UK Singles Chart for four consecutive weeks in 1974 for which red hot band?

Answer: The Rubettes

Arriving on the coat tails of the glam rock era and using their doo-wop influenced sound The Rubettes became an instant hit with "Sugar Baby Love". Unfortunately, in most parts of the world, that remains their only remembered song. The band did enjoy further success in Europe with songs such as "Tonight", "I Can Do It" and "Juke Box Jive".

The band continued to tour well into the 2000s and made good use of the nostalgia circuit.
9. The Red Hot Chili Peppers first chart success in the USA came with the cover of the Stevie Wonder song "Higher Ground".

Answer: True

"Higher Ground" was the band's first single from their fourth album "Mother's Milk" (1989) and it found its way into both the US Alternative Charts and Mainstream Rock Charts. Their previous four singles; "Get Up and Jump" (1984), "Jungle Man" and "Hollywood (Africa)" (both 1985) and "Fight Like a Brave" (1987) did not manage to reach the Top Forty at all. Since "Higher Ground" the band has not looked back and has moved on to become one of the important influences in the rock music industry.

They were inducted into Rock and Roll's Hall of Fame in 2012 and marked their induction with an all-star jam of "Higher Ground".
10. Which Swedish musician had a hit in 1997 with "Save Tonight"?

Answer: Eagle-Eye Cherry

"Save Tonight" was the lead single from Eagle-Eye's debut album and it more than kick-started his career, it launched it and it has become his signature song. The single reached the Top Ten in numerous countries and earned Cherry a raft of accolades including "Swedish Song of the Year". Cherry's father, Don, was a renowned jazz trumpeter who was inducted into Oklahoma's Jazz Hall of Fame in 2011 and his half-sister is Neneh who gained international acclaim with her debut single "Buffalo Stance".
