Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I recommend walking around naked in your living room."

Answer: You Learn

The most popular radio single in Canada in 1996, "You Learn" was the fourth track from "Jagged Little Pill" to become an official release. It showed on more Billboard charts (eight of them!) than any Morissette single before it and was, for all intents and purposes, the strongest track on paper, even if it didn't have as much staying power as "Ironic" would in the years to follow. "You Learn" was written by Morissette during the recording of "Jagged Little Pill", though recorded later than the other tracks, because her emotionality was inspired by an event in which she was robbed at gunpoint in an L.A. street.
2. "The moment I let go of it was the moment I got more than I could handle."

Answer: Thank U

Coming off the massive success of "Jagged Little Pill", Morissette released her fourth album, "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie", breaking sales records to significant critical acclaim. "Thank U" was the first track to become a single this time around, written after Morissette spent time in India, and it topped the charts in the U.S. and Canada.

The music video is known for its notoriety; it featured Morissette walking, naked, throughout busy city streets.
3. "It's like rain on your wedding day."

Answer: Ironic

Though we could debate time and time again whether or not the contents of the song "Ironic" are actually ironic, what is important to note is that the song was a runaway success and by far the most recognizable of Morissette's many singles. The third track to hit radios from "Jagged Little Pill", it showed on seven Billboard charts (topping two of them) and went Platinum in the UK. In Morissette's home country of Canada, it won a Juno Award and hit number one on both the Canada Top Singles Chart and the Canada Rock/Alternative Chart.

To set the record straight, rain on your wedding day is coincidence, which isn't necessarily irony.
4. "We'll fast forward to a few years later, and no one knows except the both of us."

Answer: Hands Clean

The lead single of Morissette's fifth studio album, "Under Rug Swept", "Hands Clean" was part of series of tracks written by the musician after a significant break in music-making following her touring for "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie". Featuring Morissette's characteristic honest lyrics, the track was an attempt to come forward about some of her earliest relationships.

It was another win for the singer, topping the charts in Canada and hitting a peak of number three on the Billboard US Adult Alternative Songs and US Adult Top 40 charts. Released in 2002, it would be her only time at these heights following the apex of her career.
5. "What it all comes down to is that everything's gonna be fine, fine, fine."

Answer: Hand in My Pocket

Hitting number one on the Canada Top Singles Chart and the Billboard US Alternative Airplay Chart, "Hand in My Pocket" was the second single from "Jagged Little Hill" and the first one to propel Morissette to a level of radio play that implanted her into the mainstream scene. Considered one of the strongest tracks from her album, it fits into a grittier aesthetic that would also be used by contemporaries like Sheryl Crow and Shawn Colvin.

At one point, before Paula Cole's "I Don't Wanna Wait" was chosen, "Hand in My Pocket" was slated to be the theme song for "Dawson's Creek".
6. "And there I go jumping before the gunshot has gone off."

Answer: All I Really Want

The final official single from "Jagged Little Pill", "All I Really Want" was also the final song to be written for the album (though it was the first track on the disc). Another track about relationships, it was the lowest-performing single from the disc, and a sign that while "Jagged Little Pill" was a powerhouse, it was time for a new sound. Alanis would release her next album a year and a half later.

It peaked at number two on the Canadian charts though only number fourteen on the Billboard US Alternative Airplay Chart.
7. "Did you forget about me, Mr. Duplicity?"

Answer: You Oughta Know

Though Morissette released two albums in the early '90s it wasn't until "Jagged Little Pill" that she broke into mainstream radio play to become one of the best-selling artists of the decade. "You Oughta Know" was the first single from that album, catapulting the alternative singer into stardom and allowing her to get a foothold on contemporary radio stations for years. Winning two Grammy Awards (and nominated for three), "You Oughta Know" peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100.

She recorded the track in-studio with both Dave Navarro and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who were recording their band's album "One Hot Minute" in Los Angeles around the same time.
8. "The course of a lifetime, you'll never forget."

Answer: Eight Easy Steps

Though Alanis' sixth album, "So-Called Chaos", was a popular international release, her singles failed to hit the consistent heights she previously achieved in the 1990s and early 2000s. The album still managed to hit number two on the Canadian Albums Chart and number five on the Billboard 200. "Eight Easy Steps" was the third single from the disc and far from its best-received, but it marked a noted difference in her aesthetic; notably, it appeared on Dance Charts in the U.S. instead of Pop, Alternative, or Contemporary.
9. "You've already won me over in spite of me."

Answer: Head Over Feet

Alanis' first number one single on the Billboard US Mainstream Top 40 Chart, "Head Over Feet" also, unsurprisingly, topped the charts in Canada as well, continuing Morissette's reign over adult contemporary and pop stations in the mid-1990s. The fifth single off "Jagged Little Pill", "Head Over Feet" was one of the handful of tracks to feature harmonica, one of the key instruments that saw a resurgence in alternative rock throughout this part of the decade.
10. "I am flattered by your fascination with me."

Answer: Uninvited

The 1990s was a decade for phenomenal movie soundtracks, and when Alanis' "Uninvited" was added to the "City of Angels" soundtrack in 1998, it joined popular tracks like "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan and the contemporary hit "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls. The soundtrack topped the US Billboard 200 while the exclusive track appeared on four Billboard Singles Charts (topping off at number one on the US Mainstream Top 40 Chart).

It won two Grammy Awards and was performed at the ceremony in 1999.
