Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first song is "Help Me" by Lafayette Leake and Sonny Boy Williamson. What famous song by Booker T and the MG's shares a bass line with "Help Me?"

Answer: Green Onions

"Help Me" features harmonica and has been recorded by Junior Wells, Magic Slim, Little Mack Simmons, Luther Allison and Fenton Robinson.
These are all Booker T and the MG's songs, by the way, except "Pigmy Beans and Rice." They did record a "Red Beans and Rice" and a "Pigmy" but as far as I know never did a medley of the two.
2. Here is a Willie Dixon song: "Well, _____, but I got to put you down a little while. Well, _____, but I got to put you down a little while. Well you done made me mess up my happy home, made me mistreat my only child." What goes in the blanks and is also the title?

Answer: I Can't Quit You Baby

Willie Dixon was unique among bluesmen in that he could read, write and arrange music. This made him very valuable at Chess Records.

Led Zeppelin also had a hit with this song.
3. What 1948 Muddy Waters hit inspired the naming of a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band?

Answer: Rolling Stone

"Rolling Stone" was based on Robert Petway's "Catfish Blues." In addition to the Rolling Stones there is also "Rolling Stone" magazine and Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone."
4. The next song is another by Willie Dixon with these lyrics: "The gypsy woman told my mother, Before I was born, I got a boy child comin', He's gonna be a son of a gun, He gonna make pretty womens, Jump and shout, Then the world wanna know, What this all about." What song is this?

Answer: I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man

David Johansen of the New York Dolls once claimed that he wrote this song. In his story he sold the song to Willie Dixon for a hot meal. The only problem is that Johansen was born in 1950 and the song came out in 1954 which means he would have had to have written it when he was 4 years old.
5. Consider these lyrics: "Now, when I was young boy, At the age a-five, My mother say I's gonna be, The greatest man alive, But now I'm a man, I past twenty-one, I want you to believe me, honey, I have lots a-fun." What Muddy Waters song are they from?

Answer: Mannish Boy

This song is a rearrangement of Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man." Diddley, as Elias McDaniel, was credited as one of the song's authors.
6. How about a Muddy Waters song. "I'm going down to Louisiana to get me a mojo hand, I'm going down to Louisiana to get me a mojo hand, I'm gonna have all you women right here at my command" are from what song?

Answer: Got My Mojo Working

A mojo hand in voodoo culture is a bag containing magical ingredients that the holder uses to ward off evil, defeat an enemy or make someone fall in love with them. It is alternately called a gris-gris, conjure bag, trick bag, jomo or nation sack.
7. "Well if the river was whiskey, And I was a diving duck, Well I would dive to the bottom, Never would I come up" are from what Hambone Willie Newbern song?

Answer: Rollin' and Tumblin'

"Rollin' and Tumblin'" has also been recorded by Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Cream, Johnny Winter, Canned Heat, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Bob Dylan. I would say that makes it a blues standard.
8. Which of the following is a B.B. King signature song?

Answer: Thrill is Gone

"Thrill is Gone" was written by Rick Darnell and Roy Hawkins. Another of Hawkins' songs was "Why Do Everything Happen to Me" which he wrote after a car accident paralyzed his arm.

"Born Under a Bad Sign" is a signature song for Albert King. "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" is a Freddie King song while "As Long as I Have You" is a song from the Elvis Presley movie "King Creole."
9. Complete these lyrics to find the name of the next song: "But If I ever get on my feet again, Then I'll meet my long lost friend, It's mighty strange, without a doubt, ______"?

Answer: Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out

This is a Jimmy Witherspoon song. He was one of the last of the shouting blues artists before that kind of music went out of style in the early 1950's. Witherspoon made a comeback at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1959 and had a little success after that.

In his life he recorded with Eric Burdon, T-Bone Walker, Long John Baldry, Earl Hines, Junior Mance and Robben Ford who called him "the epitome of cool," so he had that going for him.
10. What song are these lyrics from? "You gotta reap just what you sow, that old saying is true. You gotta reap just what you sow, that old saying is true. Just like you mistreat someone, someone's gonna mistreat you."

Answer: Further on Down the Road

This song is also known as "Farther Up the Road." Bobby "Blue" Bland recorded it in 1957. Bland was one of the Beale Streeters. This was a group of young Memphis musicians which included B.B. King, Earl Forest, Rosco Gordon and John Marshall Alexander (AKA Johnny Ace). Bland hit number one on the R&B chart with this song.

He also hit number one with "I Pity the Fool" and "That's the Way Love Is" and number two with "I'll Take Care of You," "Don't Cry No More," and "Turn on Your Love Light." He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. That's not bad for a man who at one time was valet and chauffeur for B.B. King.
