Chic - Remembering the 'Good Times' Quiz

When we were in high school, Chic was my friend's favorite group. I liked them, but they weren't my favorite. Over the years, however, I've come to appreciate them much more in retrospect. My quiz is a mix of lyrics and general info. Have fun!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "...A Rhumba, and a Tango; Latin hustle, too...."

Answer: Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)

This song was Chic's introduction in 1977. Written by group members, the late Bernard Edwards, guitarist, and Nile Rodgers, drummer, along with Kenny Lehman, who played woodwinds on this track, the single peaked at #6 on both Billboard's Pop and R&B charts. By the way, this song featured background vocals by Luther Vandross.
2. "...Let's cut the rug, a little jive and jitterbug./ We want the best, we won't settle for less...."

Answer: Good Times

A sort of capsulation on cultural phenomenona, "Good Times" was featured on the "Risque" LP. A classic, the song hit #1 on both the Pop and R&B charts, and it was "sampled" by the Sugarhill Gang on their hit, "Rapper's Delight".
3. "...All alone, in my bed at night. I grab my pillow and squeeze it tight..."

Answer: I Want Your Love

Featured on the "C'est Chic" LP, the single hit #7 on the Pop chart and #5 on the R&B chart. This song, by the way, featured the instrument, tubular bells, which was somewhat unusual. The bells were played by Joe Rossy. Of course, back in the mid-70's, Mike Oldfield's song, the theme from the movie, "The Exorcist" featured and was entitled "Tubular Bells".
4. "...But it don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing...."

Answer: Everybody Dance

Another song from the "Chic" LP, this single hit #38 on the Pop Chart, and # 12 on the R&B chart.
5. "...I need some help, I get beside myself. And I've got so many things in life to do...."

Answer: My Feet Keep Dancing

Featured on the "Risque" LP, this was my favorite Chic song. The single peaked at #101 on the Pop chart and #42 on the R&B chart in 1979.
6. "...just come on down, to 54. Find a spot out on the floor..."

Answer: LeFreak

Written by the team of Edwards/Rodgers, "LeFreak" was an instant hit and a #1 smash. According to the songwriters, this song was a 'protest song'. It was written because they were denied entry into the famous "Studio 54" in New York City. The club was well-known for its policy of selective admission--if you weren't famous enough or interesting enough, you might not have been allowed entrance.
7. "...Why must I be so depressed, mmm. / I'm feelin' not like the rest..."

Answer: Soup for One

The theme from the Warner Brothers film of the same name, "Soup for One", which was recorded at the legendary "Power Station" studios, hit #80 on the Pop chart and #14 on the R&B chart in 1982. The film, which starred Saul Rubinek and Marcia Strassman, and featured singer Teddy Pendergrass, was not theatrically released at that time, however, because it was felt that it was not 'relevant enough'.
8. The Chic Organization, Ltd. produced an LP for Diana Ross.

Answer: True

Her 1980 release, "Diana", was produced by the Edwards/Rodgers production team. Filled with hot, danceable tunes, including "I'm Coming Out" and "Upside Down", the LP bore the unmistakeable Chic sound.
9. This female vocal group released an LP produced by the Chic Organization, Ltd. Name them.

Answer: Sister Sledge

Sister Sledge's super successful LP, "We Are Family", which featured the memorable title hit as well as the dance classic, "He's the Greatest Dancer", was released in 1979.
10. Chic's image and persona was always one of class--from their impeccable, well-dressed appearance, to their smooth, palatable sound. A big part of their sound included a certain instrument section. Which one?

Answer: strings

The Chic strings- Marianne Carroll, Cheryl Hong, and Karen Milne- brought a classy, orchestrated sound to several of the group's songs, such as "I Want Your Love" and "My Feet Keep Dancing".
