Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Irish city was the 1995 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Answer: Dublin

Once again, the competition was held in the Point Theatre in Dublin. This year was the 40th anniversary of the competition, and it opened with a four-minute show encompassing the history of the Eurovision Song Contest.
2. Which country won the 1995 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Norway

Norway won with their entry "Nocturne", performed by Secret Garden. It was something of an unusual choice as it was mostly an instrumental for violins, with only twenty-four words in the entire song.
3. The UK's 1995 entry was a song called "Love City Groove". Who sang it?

Answer: Love City Groove

Love City Groove (the band) consisted of four students from the BRIT School For Performing Arts & Technology. The song was a big hit in the United Kingdom and the clear winner of the country's competition to select a song. The "Curse of Eurovision" struck the band, however, who failed to achieve success with subsequent recordings.

The others are all British groups from the same era.
4. As this was the third year that Ireland was to host the Eurovision Song Contest, there was concern that the cost of doing it again would be too great. The UK offered to host the 1995 competition. In which city did they propose to stage it?

Answer: Belfast

Ireland decided to bite the bullet and host the competition once again, but asked the European Broadcasting Union to hold it elsewhere the next year, even if they were to win it for a fourth time. That request turned out to be unnecessary as Ireland only placed fourteenth. (There was some speculation that Ireland chose a song which would not do well, just to make sure they wouldn't have to put on the show again, but this was never proven to be true!)
5. The current rules stated that each country had to sing in their own official language - but there are a number of countries with more than one official language. How many entries in the 1995 Eurovision Song Contest were sung entirely in French?

Answer: two

Belgium - "La voix est libre" ("The Voice is Free") and
France - "Il me donne rendez-vous" ("He Makes a Date with Me").
6. In order to ensure that the 1995 Eurovision Song Contest didn't exceed the time slot available, the European Broadcasting Union reduced the number of entries allowed. How many entries were permitted this year?

Answer: 23

Previously there were 25 entries, but timing was an issue. To make sure the competition could be televised in its entirety, the number of entries allowed was reduced to 23.
7. The five lowest-scoring countries from the 1993 Eurovision Song Contest all returned to the competition in 1995. How many of the lowest-scoring countries in the 1994 competition were excluded this year?

Answer: Mary Kennedy

The others are all Irish television presenters.
9. There's always a halftime - what was the entertainment for the halftime of the 1995 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Lumen

Lumen was a musical piece composed and performed by Moya Brennan with Michael O'Suillebhean and Brian Kennedy. Moya is a singer/songwriter and harpist who was part of her family musical group, Clannad, until she went solo and later former her own band.
10. Twenty-three countries vied for the 1995 Eurovision Song crown. That means there should have been a 1st position, 2nd position, 3rd etc, all the way to 23rd, right? Wrong - or is it? How many countries, if any, tied for position?
