Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Second place is often known as 'the position of death' since no country has ever won the contest from that position. Which country performed second in the final in 2013?

Answer: Lithuania

Since the contest's inception in 1956, no country has ever won performing in either the second and 16th places. This remains true, since Lithuania could only manage 17 points on the night, finishing 22nd out of 26 entries.
2. It was a shock to many that Ireland, which had won the contest seven times, came in last place during the final. How many fewer points did they have than the penultimately placed entry?

Answer: 3

Ireland selected their entry, Ryan Dolan singing 'Only Love Survives', through the annual selection 'Eurosong'. The song achieved eighth place in the first semi final, but fell to last place in the final. Despite the fact Ireland have won the contest seven times, more than any other country, they have also come last on two occasions, in 2007 and 2013.
3. Sarah Dawn Finer, a Swedish singer, performed ABBA's 'The Winner Takes It All' while the votes were being gathered. However, viewers saw her previously that evening, but as whom?

Answer: Lynda Woodruff

Sarah Dawn Finer has entered the Melodifestivalen, Sweden's selection for the Eurovision Song Contest on a number of occasions, but has so far not been able to win. Sarah's comedy alter-ego Lynda was featured in three sketches in the two semi finals and on finals night, where she gave tours of different parts of Sweden, often getting into mischief.
4. What did Petra Mede say when Denmark had won the contest?

Answer: It's just 20 minutes away!

Malmo, the host city, is connected to Copenhagen via the Oresund bridge, resulting in only a 20 minute drive between the two cities, hence the comment.
5. How many of the 26 songs in the Final were sung primarily in English?

Answer: 18

Greece's song 'Alcohol is Free' and Spain's song 'Contigo Hasta El Final' had a few phrases in English, however, English remains the majority language for Eurovision entries. Its popularity increased when countries were not just limited to their majority language(s).
6. Causing some outrage after the show, the show's winner, Denmark, was announced before how many of the 39 countries were still to give their votes?

Answer: 4

After the show, one of the reasons given for the premature announcement was that the show was running late and the winner had to walk from the green room and into the main arena, which took a considerable amount of time.
7. More outrage in the contest now - it was said that which country may have rigged the vote by paying people in different countries to cast votes for them?

Answer: Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan came second on the night. Videos were published which showed Azerbaijani officials offering to pay 20 euros to people from countries with smaller countries to vote for them. Nothing was 100% proven, and some are even suggesting that their 2011 victory was bought in the same way. Again, this hasn't been proven.
8. Which of these were not referenced in the interval act 'Swedish Smorgasbord'?

Answer: Skype

The 'Swedish Smorgasbord' was a comedic song encompassing many aspects of Sweden and its culture. The Swedish Chef and Moose were mentioned at the beginning and it was said that recycling is 'in their hearts'. Although Skype was co-founded by a Swede, it wasn't mentioned.
9. The winner of the evening, Emmelie de Forest's 'Only Teardrops', featured a player of which instrument at the very start of the song?

Answer: Flute

Emmelie took many of Loreen's conventions from the previous year, including the small number of people on stage, and performing barefoot. The song won the show with 281 points and reached number one in four European countries, with many more top ten appearances.
10. What was considered strange about the running order in the 2013 contest?

Answer: It was not decided randomly

For the first time, the producers could decide the show's running order. This was continued into the 2014 contest as well. The only random position was the host nation's to avoid any strategy being applied to make the host's song seem more favorable.
