Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who played the guitar solo on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'?

Answer: Eric Clapton

George Harrison asked Clapton to sit in when the other Beatles showed little enthusiasm for his composition during the 'White Album' sessions.
2. Who played the saxophone on 'You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)'?

Answer: Brian Jones

The Beatles had invited the Rolling Stones to a session, expecting him to bring his guitar. He showed up with a sax instead and added some faux-lounge flavor to this B-side.
3. Who played the keyboards on 'Get Back'?

Answer: Billy Preston

Preston, an old friend who toured Britain in the old days with Little Richard, was invited to the 'Get Back' sessions in the hope that his presence would calm the infighting between the Fabs.
4. Who played drums on the album version of 'Love Me Do'?

Answer: Andy White

White, a professional session drummer, was brought in by producer George Martin after original Beatles' drummer Pete Best put in a poor performance at an earlier session, their first with Martin. The Beatles in the meantime had replaced Best with Ringo Starr, but Martin insisted on using White, relegating Ringo to tambourine. Ringo drummed on a later version, issued as a single in some pressings. Best's plodding version was included in the Anthology series.
5. Who sang back-up vocals on 'Birthday'?

Answer: Yoko Ono and Patti Harrison

Yoko was a new and unsettling presence during the marathon 'White Album' sessions. Here she joins George's wife on one of the few true collaborations between John and Paul from this period.
6. Who played the piano solo on 'In My Life'?

Answer: George Martin

Martin recorded the solo an octave lower and at half the speed heard on the final record. Speeding up the solo gives it a sound similar to a harpsichord.
7. Who played the flute in 'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away'?

Answer: Johnnie Scott

Session musician Scott played two solos, one on alto flute and the other on tenor flute, that were later mixed together.
8. Who say the background vocals on 'Yellow Submarine'?

Answer: Marianne Faithfull

Faithfull, as famous for her tryst with Mick Jagger as for her pop hits at the time, joined the Rolling Stones' Brian Jones, Patti Boyd Harrison and Beatle aides Mal Evans and Neil Aspinall on the backing vocals for this busy track.
9. Who played the sitar on 'The Inner Light'?

Answer: Shankar Ghosh

Ghosh joined 10 other Indian musicians on this tune, which had lyrics lifted almost word for word from the Tao Te Ching. The only contributions by the Beatles were George's lead vocal with backing vocals by John and Paul.
10. Who says the backing vocals on 'All You Need Is Love'?

Answer: Graham Nash

Nash, soon to leave the Hollies, was part of an all-star cast that included Clapton, Jagger, Richards, Keith Moon and a host of others singing background on this session, which combined live performance with pre-recorded tracks for a world-wide broadcast.
