Answer: Harlem Shake

The Harlem Shake actually began in 1981 when a Harlem resident created it, and in 2001 G. Dep featured it in a music video.

However, when Baauer released "Harlem Shake" in 2012, the original dance was nowhere to be seen. This 'dance' was completely different. Shortly after the song's release, thousands of videos were uploaded to Youtube every single day, all featuring a group of people crazily dancing this new "Harlem Shake", oftentimes dressed up in bizarre costumes.

Answer: Cha Cha Slide

"Cha Cha Slide" was released in 2000 by DJ Casper, and it became a dance party hit several years later. Upon its release, he song was sent to clubs along with videos of how to perform the dance so all could enjoy the new song at the clubs. The club version of the song is four minutes longer than what was heard on the radio. Even though the song is somewhat annoying, it still remains a favorite of mine as dance parties.

Answer: Gangnam Style

The success of "Gangnam Style" was phenomenal. It was first released in August of 2012, and by September, it reached 90 million views on YouTube, more than any other K-Pop song. However, the song burst onto the worldwide scene, gained millions of views every single day, and by December of 2012, it became the first internet video in history to be viewed one billion times. By May of 2014, the views of the video had nearly doubled the second place video ("Baby" by Justin Bieber), reaching nearly 2 billion views!

The song itself gained quite a lot of popularity as well. Besides being an internet video phenomenon, the song proved to be one of the greatest songs of all time when it reached number one on dozens of charts in over thirty countries around the world! The song brought K-Pop to the forefront of world music.

Answer: Cupid Shuffle

Cupid released "Cupid Shuffle" in 2007, and the song became a dance hit. In the Xbox 360 game, "Dance Central 3", the song was featured as the 2000s dance craze. Though the song is often thought to be similar to "Cha Cha Slide", there is a uniqueness that cannot be rivaled.

Funnily enough, Cupid himself sang a version of this song in 2012 in the blind auditions of "The Voice", but none of the judges liked him enough to turn their chair.

When the song first came out, I thought it was a "Cuban Shuffle". Since then, I've learned its real name several times; I still call it the "Cuban Shuffle".

Answer: Thriller

Michael Jackson released "Thriller" in 1983, and the accompanying video was released one month later. The 13-minute short film incorporated the song into a horror movie set in the 1950s. The video has been regarded by many as the greatest music video of all time, and the song itself has similar accolades.

When the song comes on, who can resist curling their fingers and wildly dancing like a zombie?

"Thriller" found its way into many other forms of media, including video games. The 2009 game "Plants Vs. Zombies" originally included a dancing zombie that resembled Michael Jackson from the video. However, a year after Jackson's death, the zombie was changed to a generic disco dancer after Jackson's estate objected to the inclusion of his figure in the game.

Answer: Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)

"Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" was released by Shakira and featuring Freahlyground in 2010 for the FIFA World Cup. The song became the fastest and best selling FIFA song, and in April of 2014, it was the eighth most watched video on YouTube.

The song was based on a 1986 mokossa hit by Golden Sounds, "Zamina mina (Zangalewa)". The Golden Sounds also helped with the songwriting of Shakira's song.

Answer: Boot Scootin' Boogie

Brooks and Dunn released "Boot Scootin' Boogie" in 1992, and the song seems to rekindle the desire to line dance in the United States. Of course, many songs have been released with varying versions of the line dance, but since the release of this song, it has remained iconic in the eyes of many as the "line dancing song".

I remember in grade school, everyone got very tired of this song because at least twice a week during PE class, we were required to learn line dancing to this song, over and over again. But now I love it all over again.

Answer: Footloose

"Footloose" was released by Kenny Loggins in 1984 as a single from the film of the same name. The upbeat dance moves of the film became a hit, and people everywhere were starting to dance "footloose". The opening sequence to the film is a personal favorite part of mine: in it, the shoes of people are shown, and the dancing is wild and crazy with just this view. I can only assume their top halves were dancing just as crazy (although poor Bill has no balance and must stay seated to dance with just his feet).

Answer: Animals

18-year-old Dutch DJ Martin Garrix released his single "Animals" in 2013 and it became a hit throughout the world. His accompanying music video shows several people dancing around in animal masks.

The club dance associated with the song is similar to the "Harlem Shake". In this dance, the idea is to don an animal mask, and when the beat drops, run onto stage and dance around wildly. Basically, if you're wearing a mask and moving while the song plays, you're successfully dancing to it.

Answer: Stayin' Alive

"Stayin' Alive" was released by the Bee Gees in 1977, and became one of their signature hits. The song, as well as the associated dance, was from the 1977 film "Saturday Night Fever". Interestingly, the song is used during CPR training because the beat of the song. Ideally, while performing CPR, the chest compressions need to be between 100 and 120 beats per minute. Because "Stayin' Alive" has 104 beats per minute, it was found that those thinking about the song while performing CPR actually did better than those who didn't.

I don't know about you, but when my friends and I think about disco dancing, this is the only song that comes to mind!
