Hoagy Carmichael, from Bloomington,IN, first recorded it Sept. 15, 1930. Gorrell wrote the lyrics for Hoagy's sister Georgia Carmichael, not the state. In 1992 he underwent quadruple bypass, and in 1994 breathing problems revealed a lump in his nostril, luckily it was non-cancerous but he did quit smoking.

In 1999, Doug survived a plane crash at O'Hare in Chicaga, IL, and in 2000 a crashing of his ultralight plane in Robertson Co. TN, broke his ankle and cracked a rib. Seems he has been lucky not to be in that pine box.
