Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jazz: This pianist is quite simply one of the most talented persons to ever approach the instrument. His complex compositions and his use of electronic gadgets in his recordings have garnered him the respect of his peers across the globe. His MTV hit "Rockit" even opened the eyes of younger people and inspired them to look into his other work. Who is this pioneer of the piano?

Answer: Herbie Hancock

In 2002, Herbie Hancock picked up his ninth Grammy Award, the Best Jazz Instrumental Solo trophy for the song "My Ship". Oddly, his first Grammy came for the song "Rockit" in 1983, and that song strayed far from his original jazz roots.
2. R&B: This classic group spawned the solo careers of artists such as Philip Bailey and Maurice White. The band had super hot singles such as "September" and "After the Love has Gone". Can you name this act?

Answer: Earth Wind and Fire

Maurice White put this band together in 1969 after a stint with Chess Records and as a member of the Ramsey Lewis Trio. In 2005, the band made a resurgence on the scene and released the album "Illumination" with guest artists such as Kenny G and members of the Black Eyed Peas and Outkast.
3. Alternative Rock: This three piece band has had hits such as "We've Had Enough" and "Time to Waste". The band was formed by Matt Skiba in 1997. Which band have I described?

Answer: Alkaline Trio

4. Adult Contemporary: No quiz on the music of Chicago would be complete if the city's namesake wasn't included. Is it true that the band has had an album on the Billboard Pop Albums chart in five different decades?

Answer: Yes

In 1969, the album "Chicago Transit Authority" reached number 17 on the chart. In the 1970s, the band had an outstanding 13 albums on the chart, five reached the number one spot. In the 1980s, the band tapered off and only had seven albums appear on the charts.

In the 1990s, the band landed five of their albums on the Billboard list. In the decade beginning in 2000, the band released a greatest hits album that reached number 38 on the chart, guaranteeing them the distinction of having albums on the chart in five different decades.

The band is second only to The Beach Boys in record sales of any US band.
5. Hard Rock: Which band had success with albums titled "Equinox", "The Serpent is Rising" and "Crystal Ball"?

Answer: Styx

Of the bands listed, only Styx hailed from Chicago. The band's roots can be traced to an earlier band named Tradewinds, when brothers Chuck and John Panozzo teamed up with Dennis DeYoung. The band evolved into TW4 and then into Styx. The band only had one song to reach the top of the charts in the USA, and that was "Babe".

The song originally appeared on the 1979 album titled "Cornerstone".
6. Blues: This past member of "Saturday Night Live" found musical success as one half of the Blues Brothers. He was born in Chicago in 1949. Can you name this artist?

In addition to playing Joliet "Jake" Blues as one half of the Blues Brothers, along with Elwood Blues (as played by Dan Aykroyd), John Belushi charmed the American public with his characters such as The Killer Bee, a proprietor of the Olympia Cafe ("chee-buga, chee-buga") and Samurai Futaba. Belushi passed away on March 5, 1982 in Hollywood as a result of a drug overdose.

The band went on to international success and even won a pair of Grammy Awards for their efforts.
