Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Tonight you're mine completely. You give your love so sweetly"

Answer: The Shirelles

"Will You Love Me Tomorrow" was one of six songs by the all-girl group to reach the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 during the early part of the 1960s, and the first to top the chart, reaching number one in January of 1961. It was the breakthrough hit by the songwriting team of Gerry Goffin and Carole King, who went on to have incredible success during the decade.

Some of the biggest musical acts from the '60s recorded Goffin/King tunes, including Bobby Vee, The Monkees and Aretha Franklin, just to name a few. "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" has been covered by numerous artists, including a beautiful version by King herself that appears on her classic 1971 album "Tapestry".
2. "When I look up to the sky. I see your eyes, a funny kind of yellow"

Answer: The Status Quo

"Pictures of Matchstick Men" was the band's only top 40 hit in the U.S., peaking at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968. The song was written by lead singer and guitarist Francis Rossi, and paints a rather unflattering picture of his then wife, and soon to be ex-wife.

The group formed in London, England in 1962 and were originally called The Spectres. In 1967, they changed their name to The Status Quo, and finally just Status Quo in 1969. Although the band achieved little success in the States, Status Quo is one of the most successful rock acts of all-time in the United Kingdom, placing more than 60 songs on the UK Singles Chart, with 22 of those reaching the top ten.
3. "The eastern world, it is explodin'. Violence flarin', bullets loadin'"

Answer: Barry McGuire

"Eve of Destruction" was written in 1964 by P.F. Sloan, who at the time was only 19-years-old. It was initially offered to The Byrds, but they didn't feel it was right for them. The song was first recorded by the L.A. rock band The Turtles for inclusion on their debut album "It Ain't Me Babe", but it was not released as a single at the time. McGuire released his version in the summer of 1965, and it became an instant hit, despite being banned my many U.S. radio stations because of its antigovernment message. "Eve of Destruction" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in September of 1965, spending seven weeks in the top ten.

It also reached number three on the UK Singles Chart.
4. "Over bridge of sighs. To rest my eyes in shades of green"

Answer: Small Faces

"Itchycoo Park" was written by bandmates Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane, and released in the Summer of 1967. The song was initially banned by the BBC because of what they considered to be obvious drug references, such as the use of the word "high", which usually meant high on drugs.

The band, however, explained to the BBC that it was just about a park that they use to go to as kids, and that the lyrics were completely innocent. Incredibly enough, the BBC bought it and the ban was lifted shortly thereafter.

The band was quite popular in the UK amassing seven top ten singles between 1966 and 1968, but not so much in the US, where "Itchycoo Park" was their only hit, reaching number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968. Small Faces disbanded in 1969, with Marriott joining the rock group Humble Pie, and the remaining band members teaming up with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood to create the early '70s band Faces.
5. "Some folks are born made to wave the flag. Ooh, they're red, white and blue"

Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

"Fortunate Son" was released in 1969, during the height of the Viet Nam war. Long considered a anti-war movement anthem, it has more to do with class disparity than an indictment of the war. The lyrics are a perfect example of how rich and powerful men start wars, but poor men have to fight them.

The song was a double-sided hit, along with "Down on the Corner", peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in December of 1969. "Fortunate Son" placed at number 99 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time", and in 2013 was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
6. "When the truth is found to be lies. And all the joy within you dies"

Answer: Jefferson Airplane

"Somebody to Love" was the band's biggest hit, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967. Originally titled "Someone to Love", it was written by Darby Slick and was first recorded in 1965 by his band The Great Society, whose members also included lead vocalist Grace Slick and her then husband drummer Jerry Slick.

The group disbanded in 1966 and soon after Grace joined Jefferson Airplane, replacing lead singer Signe Toly Anderson who left the group to raise her newborn child. In 1967, the band recorded a new version of the now retitled "Somebody to Love" and another song written by Slick herself titled "White Rabbit" for inclusion on their second studio album "Surrealistic Pillow".

It was the group's biggest selling LP by far, reaching number three on the Billboard 200 album chart.
7. "The night we met I knew I needed you so. And if I had the chance I'd never let you go"

Answer: The Ronettes

"Be My Baby" was the group's only top ten hit, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in October of 1963. The Ronettes consisted of Veronica "Ronnie" Bennett, her older sister Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley, but on this particular recording Ronnie was the only member to perform. Produced by Phil Spector, it was one of the first songs to feature his innovative production technique known as the "Wall of Sound", which utilized orchestral instruments, such as strings, woodwinds and brass.

Many of the musicians who played on the song were members of "The Wrecking Crew", a group of session players who appeared on thousands of studio recordings during the 1960s and early 1970s.
8. "Girl, you thought you found the answer on that magic carpet ride last night. But when you wake up in the mornin' the world still gets you uptight"

Answer: Paul Revere & the Raiders

"Kicks", written by the extraordinary songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, was Paul Revere & the Raiders' first U.S. top ten single. Considered one of the first anti-drug songs, its message was thought to be somewhat outdated at a time when recordings such as The Byrds' "Eight Miles High" and The Association's "Along Comes Mary", were depicting drug use in a more positive light.

It didn't seem to matter though, since "Kicks" went on to become the Raiders' biggest hit to date, spending 14 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966, peaking at number four.
9. "Don't want your love anymore. Don't want your kisses, that's for sure"

Answer: The Everly Brothers

"Cathy's Clown" was The Everly Brothers' third and final U.S. number one, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks in the spring of 1960. It was an even bigger hit across the Atlantic, spending seven weeks atop the UK Singles Chart. Although their popularity in the U.S. began to wane with the onset of the British Invasion, they were still very successful in other countries, such as Canada, Australia and especially Britain, where they had nine top 40 hits between 1963 and 1968.

In 1986 Don and Phil Everly were part of the inaugural class to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
10. "Bill, I love you so, I always will. I look at you and see the passion eyes of May"

Answer: The 5th Dimension

"Wedding Bell Blues" capped off a very special year for the group, spending three weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in November of 1969. Earlier that year they scored their biggest hit with "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In", another chart topper that spent six weeks at number one. Written by the prolific singer/songwriter Laura Nyro, "Wedding Bell Blues" was just one of a number of her compositions to be recorded by The 5th Dimension. Two of these, "Sweet Blindness" and "Stoned Soul Picnic", were top 20 hits in the U.S. in 1968.
