Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before Adam Sandler sang their hit "Love Stinks," this band released a self-titled album that included an instrumental piece called "Ice Breaker (for the Big "M")". The band's name had initially included the word "blues," and this piece of music hearkened back to those blues roots, before they started turning out radio friendly hits like "Centerfold." Which band was it?

Answer: J. Geils Band

Initially called the J. Geils Blues Band, the group released their eponymous first album in 1970. J. Geils played the guitar and wrote the piece ("Ice Breaker (for the Big "M")"). Most of the band's songs, including "Love Stinks" and "Centerfold," were written by vocalists Seth Justman and/or Peter Wolf.

This question was chipped from the deep freeze by Phoenix Rising member pusdoc.
2. Which British progressive rock band released "Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day" as the second single from their 1974 album "War Child"?

Answer: Jethro Tull

Sadly, the song failed to chart for the band, however, it remains one of the favourite songs of the band's founder, Ian Anderson. In a 2018 interview with Rolling Stone magazine he listed it as one of the ten songs that defined the band's career and it has appeared on numerous compilation albums. Anderson advised that back in the early 1970s scientists were predicting a new ice age and this became the inspiration for the track. Anderson also noted that those scientists were wrong, terribly wrong. The world is warming and, as he says, it essentially made this song redundant.

This question was removed from the chiller by Phoenix Rising member Pollucci19.
3. Which band released the song "Cold as Ice", initially as the B-side of another single, off their debut album in 1977?

Answer: Foreigner

Foreigner's eponymous debut album from 1977 realised four singles. Originally, "Cold as Ice" was the B-side of "Feels Like the First Time", but was later released as an A-side in its own right. The song went on to become Foreigner's best known hit, reaching number six on the US Billboard Top 100.

Duran Duran and Supertramp are both well known bands from the 1970s and both were still performing forty years later. MOP (Mash Out Posse) is a hip hop band who released a song also called "Cold as Ice" in 2000, which sampled Foreigner's original version.

4. "Ice Cream Man" is a song written by blues guitarist John Brim and was featured on which band's debut album in 1978 at the insistence of David Lee Roth?

Answer: Van Halen

Laden with double entendre, this song is ripe for Roth's devilish sense of humour. He liked it so much that he would include it on his own solo album "Diamond Dave" (2003). Van Halen included this track on a three-song demo cassette when they auditioned for a recording contract and then incorporated it as one of two cover songs on their self titled debut. The other was The Kinks' "You Really Got Me", which was also the band's first single from the disc.

Brim wrote the song in 1953 but did not release it until 1969.

This cool question was licked into shape by Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.
5. In 1982, a Hank Williams Jr. song informed listeners that Hank enjoyed which of the following on ice?

Answer: Whiskey

The track is a red-neck country rocker that Hank uses to liven up his 1982 album "High Notes". The song is well backed up by "If Heaven Ain't a Lot Like Dixie", and "The South's Gonna Rattle Again". The former was released as a single and it peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. The other notes of interest on the album are a cover that Hank Jr. does of his father's song "Honky Tonkin'" and the Beatles track "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)".

This question was placed on the rocks by Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.
6. Metallica's "Ride the Lightning", is the band's second studio album and on it is a song with "Ice" in the title. What problem did Metallica have with ice?

Answer: Trapped Under Ice

"Trapped Under Ice" deals with a man awakening from a state of deep freeze. He soon realizes that he is trapped within his chamber, has nowhere to go and that there will be no one coming to his rescue. The track, recorded in 1984, was the first song on the second side of "Ride the Lightning", an album whose title was inspired by a line in Stephen King's novel "The Stand" (1978). Metallica, a "thrash metal" band, would became even more famous in 2000, when they led the case against the peer-to-peer file sharing service Napster.

7. In 1986, Billy Joel released an ice-themed song on his "The Bridge" album. What activity gave the song its name?

Answer: Running on Ice

Written by Billy Joel, "Running on Ice" was the first song on side one of the album, recorded in both New York and Burbank, California between 1985-1986. The song exhibits some influence of the New Wave movement, with overtones of Sting (in fact Joel stated he had Sting in mind when he wrote it), but the song was not well received. It speaks of the stresses and angst of modern life, and was used in an episode of 'The Office' in 2011.

This question was snow-ploughed together by Phoenix Rising member VegemiteKid.
8. "Black Ice" was both a song and 2008 album name for this internationally-acclaimed Australian rock band. It was their biggest album since 1980's "Back In Black". Which group?

Answer: AC/DC

"Black Ice" was the last song on the album of the same name. It was not released as a single but four other songs were, including the smash hit "Rock and Roll Train". This album debuted at number one in 29 countries. Sadly it was the last one recorded by the classic line-up before Malcolm Young left the band because of poor health.

9. The 2009 song "Baby's On Ice" was a hit for which Australian singer?

Answer: Vanessa Amorosi

Vanessa Amarosi was born in Melbourne, Australia of Italian parentage and began performing at an early age, having signed her first contract at sixteen. Her success in the charts is reflected in the number of Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards she has achieved. The song "Baby's On Ice" was on her 2009 album "Hazardous", her third ARIA Top Ten album.

This question was defrosted by Phoenix Rising member VegemiteKid.
10. Which of the following is a novel by Alistair MacLean that provided the inspiration for a Jack White song, appearing on his 2018 album "Boarding House Reach"?

Answer: Ice Station Zebra

Jack White traded in his white stripes for zebra stripes. "Ice Station Zebra" is one of two tracks (the other being "Over and Over and Over") that Jack had worked on for what was to have been a collaboration with Jay-Z. Both songs appear on "Boarding House Reach" but the project with Jay-Z did not get off the ground.

The initial attraction for the title did not come from Jack reading the Alistair MacLean novel, but an interest that he had in reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes and a quirk that he'd uncovered about the man. Hughes had purchased a Las Vegas television station and gave them strict instructions that, between the hours of midnight and 8 am, they were to telecast, for his benefit, the movie "Ice Station Zebra" over and over again. The 1968 movie, which stars Rock Hudson and was one of Hughes' favourites, was based on the MacLean novel. The other three titles listed above are all novels by Anna Stuart.
