Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hi all. Your starter this time - Name the group who had a hit with a song containing these lyrics: 'Any time you want to you can turn me on to anything you want to'.

Answer: The Mindbenders

The song was 'A Groovy Kind of Love', which reached the #2 spot in both the UK and US in 1966, after Wayne Fontana had left the group. With Fontana as lead the group had previously had a US #1 with 'The Game of Love', a song which also got to #2 in the UK.
2. The lyrics this time are 'And the sun was made to burn so bright and light the sky'. The song?

Answer: You Were Made For Me

All were hits for Freddie and The Dreamers, with 'You Were Made For Me' reaching #3 in the UK in 1963 and #21 in the US in 1965. 'I'm Telling You Now' was a 1965 US #1, and 'Do The Freddie' peaked at #18 in the US but didn't chart in Britain.
3. From a Beach Boys hit, complete the lyric 'the sound of the city baby seems to ________'?

Answer: disappear

Hopefully you all got that. The lyrics came from 'I Can Hear Music', which reached #24 on Billboard in 1969. It did better in Britain, where it got to #10.
4. It's my quiz so I'll allow myself to break the rules by including these lyrics from 1976. This time I want the group who sang, 'Gonna walk out the door but I'll soon be back for more'...

Answer: Brotherhood of Man

The song in question is that Eurovision classic and UK #1 'Save Your Kisses For Me'. The New Seekers did enter the Eurovision Song Contest, that being with 'Beg, Steal or Borrow' in 1972.
5. Safely back in the Sixties this time with the lyrics 'I was wrong and I knew I was all along'. The song was called 'Sorry _________'?

Answer: Suzanne

A hit in 1969, 'Sorry Suzanne' took The Hollies to #3 in the UK.
6. It was a hit for Dusty Springfield and Noel Harrison, and it began along the lines of 'round - like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel, never ending or beginning on an ever-spinning reel', but can you complete the title '________ of your mind'?

Answer: Windmills

It was from the movie 'The Thomas Crown Affair' and a #31 hit on Billboard for Dusty in 1969. Noel Harrison had the British hit and got to #8.
7. I give you the lyrics 'The way you sigh has me waving my conscience goodbye'. You give me the singer...

Answer: Doris Day

It can only be Doris Day and her 1964 UK #8 hit 'Move Over Darling'. It surprises me that it only got to #8, and nowhere in America, as the song seems to be so well-known and recognisable.
8. 'So I wait and in a while, I will see my true love smile' - well known lyrics from a song by whom?

Answer: Peter & Gordon

A #1 smash both sides of the Atlantic in 1964, I'm sure you all must have known those lyrics came from Peter and Gordon's 'A World Without Love'.
9. 'Every day I wake up then I start to break up' - lyrics from which song?

Answer: A Man Without Love

From 'A World Without Love' to 'A Man Without Love', the latter was a 1968 UK #2 for Engelbert Humperdinck. It also reached #19 on Billboard. All the others were hits by Engelbert too, with 'Release Me' going to #1 in the UK and spending 56 weeks on the chart in all. No wonder he was the UK's biggest selling artist of 1967.
10. An easy one to finish (I hope). 'Walk out, girl don't you walk out, we've got things to say'. A well known opening from?

Answer: A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You

All were UK hits for The Monkees in 1967 (they must have rivalled Engelbert!), 'A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You' got to #3. The song, written by Neil Diamond, went one better in the US. 'Alternate Title' is 'Randy Scouse Git' renamed so as not to be too offensive (although I have a feeling its original name did much to generate publicity in taking the song to #2 in Britain).

Well there you have it. I think I was quite kind to you all this time. That'll have to change! Let me know whatyou think and I'll get to work on Memory Lane Lyrics Part 4.
