Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This song on Linkin Park's last album turned out to be way too true for the song's writer and singer, Chester Bennington. What song is it?

Answer: Nobody Can Save Me

In 2017, Linkin Park put out their last album, "One More Light." On that album, there was a song called "Nobody Can Save Me." It turns out Chester Bennington was not kidding when he sang that. Shortly after "One More Light" came out, Bennington hanged himself. Apparently nobody could save him. There is evidence that one of the major things that caused Bennington to kill himself was the suicide of his hero, Chris Cornell, which happened just a couple months earlier. Bennington tweeted that he didn't want to live in a world without Chris Cornell, and he killed himself on Cornell's birthday, and he killed himself the same way Cornell did.

The other answers are wrong because those songs aren't on Linkin Park's last album.
2. Who sang a song called "Rock and Roll Suicide?"

Answer: David Bowie

In 1972, David Bowie released an album called "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars." This is a concept album about a fictional character who is a rock star but also an alien. At the end of the story is a song called "Rock and Roll Suicide." In this song, Ziggy contemplated suicide, but his wife Lady Stardust urged him not to, telling him that she will be there for him.

In 1989, KISS released a tribute to David Bowie with a song called "The Street Giveth and the Street Taketh Away," a song that quotes lyrics from the last two songs on the "Ziggy Stardust" album.
3. What ballad by Metallica is on their album "Ride the Lightning"?

Answer: Fade to Black

Metallica's song "Fade to Black" is about a man who is contemplating suicide. According to singer James Hetfield, the band was really depressed because their equipment had been stolen and they were kicked out of their manager's house for bad behavior. The song was released on the band's second album, "Ride the Lightning," which was certified six times platinum in the United States and charted in 11 different countries.
4. This song by Audioslave mentions a father committing suicide, his daughter also committing suicide, and the narrator himself committing suicide. What song is it?

Answer: Exploder

Audioslave were a supergroup featuring Chris Cornell, formerly of Soundgarden, and the non-singing, or should I say non-rapping, former members of Rage Against the Machine. After Zach de la Rocha quit Rage Against the Machine, the rest of the band decided to go in a different direction. So they brought in Chris Cornell, whose band Soundgarden had also recent broken up, and they changed their name to Audioslave. In 2002 they put out their debut album, which was certified three times platinum by RIAA. One of my favorite songs on that album was called "Exploder."

"Exploder" tells short stories of several mentally ill people and their crimes. The second verse mentions a man who committed suicide. The daughter swore that she would not commit suicide, but she killed herself the same way her father did. Also in the third verse, the song's narrator kills himself. So this whole song is narrated by a ghost.
5. Who sang a song called "Suicide Solution"?

Answer: Ozzy Osbourne

"Suicide Solution" is a song on Ozzy's first solo album after he left Black Sabbath, "The Blizzard of Oz," which came out in 1980. The song is about a man who kills himself by drinking too much alcohol. According to Ozzy, it was about Bon Scott, the former AC/DC lead singer who died of alcohol overdose in his 30s. Bob Daisley, who wrote the lyrics, said that he actually wrote them about Ozzy.

Ozzy Osbourne was sued over this song by the parents of a teenager who committed suicide. The parents said that this song is what caused him to commit suicide. However, the lawsuit failed.
6. In this song by the Decemberists, two lovers commit suicide. Which song is it?

Answer: The Hazards of Love 4

"The Hazards of Love" is an album the Decemberists put out in 2009, in which a man who is a deer by day and a man at night and a nun fall in love with each other. The man's mother, AKA the queen, forbids the love, saying that the two of them can spend one night together but then he has to stay with his mom for the rest of his life.

Then the story's narrator, who is also the villain of the story and is known as the rake, kidnaps the nun and with the help of the queen he takes her across a river that is too dangerous to cross unless you make a deal with it.

The man makes a deal with the river pleading for it to allow him to cross once so he can save his true love and the river can kill him when he returns. The river accepts the deal, and the man, who is revealed to be the resurrected son of the rake, rescues his woman.

However, when they try to cross the river again to get home, it drowns them both. Why the two of them didn't just stay on the other side of the river is never explained on the album.
7. This song by Kix became a top 20 hit. What's it called?

Answer: Don't Close Your Eyes

No, I'm not talking about KISS. I'm talking about Kix, a band from Hagerstown, Maryland. Kix became popular in northern Maryland in the early 1980s but they weren't well-known nationwide until they released the Aerosmith-influenced power ballad, "Don't Close Your Eyes," in 1988. "Don't Close Your Eyes" peaked at number 11 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and it helped its album, "Blow my Fuse," be certified platinum.

"Don't Close Your Eyes" is a message to someone who, according to the song, is "In the middle of a suicide." The singer is trying to urge the other person to not commit suicide.
8. This song by the Mountain Goats is about someone in North Carolina who drowns himself, presumably because of loneliness. What's it called?

Answer: In Corolla

In 2006, the Mountain Goats released an album called "Get Lonely," which is a loose concept album that has 12 songs (or more if you have one of the versions that has bonus tracks) about different lonely people and how they deal with loneliness. Probably the saddest of these songs is "In Corolla."

The character is not in a Toyota Corolla car. Corolla is a city in North Carolina. The narrator goes into a lake or a pond and drowns himself.
9. This song by Avenged Sevenfold goes "Cry alone, I've gone away." What's it called?

Answer: I Won't See You Tonight, part 1

Avenged Sevenfold are one of the most popular metal bands of the 2000s. They have sold over eight million albums worldwide. In 2003, they released their second album, "Waking the Fallen." This album charted at number ten on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and it charted in five different countries.

A highlight of this album is "I Won't See You Tonight, part 1." Part One is almost nine minutes long. It starts off quiet, but it gets louder. At first, the singer is just calmly telling people that he is committing suicide, but as the song progresses, the singer starts screaming with more and more emotion. He's not only saying that the desire to kill himself is "building up inside of" him with his words, he's doing it with his changing tone of voice.
10. Who wrote "Adam's Song"?

Answer: Blink-182

"Adam's Song" is a departure from the usual sound of Blink 182. Rather than being a fast, silly song, "Adam's Song" is a slow, serious song. It charted at number two on the U.S. Modern Rock Chart and it charted in five other countries as well.

The song was about the fact that the band had been touring all over the world and getting sick of it. Despite the success they were experiencing, they were not happy because they wanted to get home to their girlfriends. The song was also inspired by the suicide of one of their fans, named Adam, who left the band a suicide note before killing himself.

The song was criticized when a survivor of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, who'd lost his best friend in that shooting, killed himself while listening to this song repeatedly. Blink 182 have stressed that this is an anti-suicide song.
