Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1995 Michael Jackson became the first artist to debut at number one on the Hot 100 chart. What artist bumped him out of the number one spot the following week?

Answer: Coolio

It was an amazing accomplishment to debut at the top but even more amazing that the song was only at the top for one week. "You Are Not Alone"(1995) was blindsided by Coolio's hit "Gangsta's Paradise" (1995) from the movie "Dangerous Minds" starring Michelle Pfieffer.
2. In 1982 Olivia Newton-John started a fitness exercise craze with her hit "Physical". What song was forced to remain at number two on the Hot 100 for nine of the ten weeks that her song stayed at number one?

Answer: "Waiting For A Girl Like You" by Foreigner

Its highly probable that if not for Olivia's hit Foreigner would have been number one for several weeks. Sometimes it's a case of bad timing that hurts a song. The song remained at number two for a tenth week when it was jumped by Hall and Oates' hit, "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)".
3. In February 1982 there was a song that hit number two on the Hot 100 for six weeks and was kept out of the top spot by two songs. What was this hit single?

Answer: "Open Arms" by Journey

"Centerfold" by J.Geils Band was number one for six weeks and during the last three weeks "Open Arms" was at number two. "Centerfold" was replaced by Joan Jett's song "I Love Rock 'n Roll" so Journey was forced to stay at number two for three more weeks.
4. In August of 1992 the female group TLC was at number two on the Hot 100 for six straight weeks with "Baby-Baby-Baby". It was replaced at number two by the song "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" by Patty Smyth and Don Henley which also was at number two for six weeks. What smash hit was number one during that 12 week run?

Answer: "End Of The Road" by Boys II Men

The song was Boyz II Men's follow up to their first hit "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday". It stayed at number one for 13 weeks.
5. In March of 1996, what song by the Beatles debuted on the Hot 100 at number 11 but didn't even hit the Top Ten?

Answer: Real Love

Amazing that a song would debut one step away from the Top Ten but never make it. "Real Love", "Free As A Bird" and "Now And Then" were all songs that were written by John Lennon which were re-mastered by the remaining members of the Beatles. The songs were part of the "Beatles Anthology".

The song "All Those Years Ago"(1981) was a song written and recorded by George Harrison as a tribute to John Lennon. It peaked at number two for three weeks in 1981.
6. In 1995 history repeated itself when Whitney Houston debuted at number one only to drop out the following week with the song "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" from the movie "Waiting To Exhale"(1995). The song stayed at number two for 11 straight weeks after falling from the top. What song bumped her out and stayed number one on the Hot 100 for sixteen weeks?

Answer: "One Sweet Day" by Mariah Carey & Boys II Men

As noted in question one of this quiz Michael Jackson's "You Are Not Alone" which debuted at number one was knocked out by Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise". This time Whitney's song was destined to become as big as "I Will Always Love You" (1993) but along came the hit collaboration from Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men called "One Sweet Day" which debuted at the top and had the 16 week stay at number one.
7. In August 1996 Donna Lewis had the hit, "I Love You Always Forever" and it peaked at number two for nine consecutive weeks without ever reaching the top. What song which started a worldwide dance craze kept her out of the top spot on the Hot 100 by remaining there for 14 weeks?

Answer: Macarena

The "Macarena" craze wore out as fast as it entered mostly because people got so damned tired of that song which was played constantly. The "Electric Slide" lasted longer because the group dance had more apppeal. The "Butt" was another popular dance craze during the 1990s. The "Dinosaur" never really got off the ground.
8. In December of 1992 the R&B group Shai recorded the song "If I Ever Fall In Love". It spent a total of eight weeks at number two but not consecutive weeks. What hit movie song kept it out of the top spot of the Hot 100?

Answer: I Will Always Love You

It's rare when a song starts to drop that it turns around and moves back up on the charts. The hit by Shai did just that and did it twice. It hit number two for one week, dropped to number three for a week, went back to two for three weeks then down to number three for three weeks and then back up to number two for four more weeks.

While all that was going on Whitney Houston was dominating the top spot for thirteen straight weeks.
9. On August 23, 1997 Usher debuted in the Billboard Hot 100 charts at number 25 with the song, "You Make Me Wanna". Which of the following songs debuted at number one and kept Usher's hit from reaching the top?

Answer: "Something About The Way You Look Tonight" by Elton John

The smash single by Elton John remained at number one for twelve weeks. It was part of a double-sided number one hit which also included "Candle In The Wind 1997", the remake of his 1988 hit about Marilyn Monroe. He re-wrote the lyrics as a tribute to his close friend, Princess Diana, who died in a tragic automobile accident in Paris on August 31, 1997.

He performed the song at her funeral in London. "Honey" and "I'll Be Missing You" also debuted at number one. "4 Seasons of Loneliness" debuted at number two but did reach the top.
10. Van Halen recorded their first and only number one song on February, 25 1984 with the hit "Jump". Which of the following singles from Michael Jackson's smash album "Thriller" (1983) debuted at number 20 on the Hot 100 but failed to bump Van Halen out of the top spot?

Answer: Thriller

The album which was released in 1983 became the biggest selling album of all-time and the songs even spilt over into 1984. The song "Thriller" gained a lot of commercial success with the release of the award winning music video directed by John Landis. In spite of debuting at number 20, the song peaked at number four behind "Jump".
