Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Former members of Curved Air, The New Animals, and Last Exit comprise this hybrid British/American band whose last new material was recorded in the 1980's.

Answer: The Police

Drummer Stewart Copeland was playing his last gigs with Curved Air when he met Sting playing with his jazz ensemble Last Exit at a local college in Newcastle, Sting's hometown. This was the spark that started The Police. Stewart and Sting were already playing in an early incarnation of The Police with guitarist Henry Padovani when Gong bassist Mike Howlett recruited them for a one time show in Paris under the name Strontium 90. Andy, who had played with The Animals and many others, was also hired for the show, and the rest was history.
2. This group lost not only a singer at first, but then their guitarist, but they went from cult status to international fame when their drummer took over the vocal duties.

Answer: Genesis

Many thought that having Peter Gabriel leave would end the band, but most were surprised at how effortlessly Phil Collins took over on lead vocals. Having guitarist Steve Hackett depart was minor in comparison to what they faced before and watched their fame grow. Their most popular period was the trio of Collins, Tony Banks on keyboards and Mike Rutherford on guitar and bass.
3. King Crimson and Asia frontman John Wetton once played with Rick Wakeman and Bill Bruford.

Answer: True

In 1977 Wetton, Wakeman and Bruford rehearsed together for six weeks, but never progressed to live performances. Out of these rehearsals came "Thirty Years" which would appear on U.K.'s debut release and "Beelzebub" showed up on Bruford's first solo outing "Feels Good To Me".
4. This ska/punk/reggae act lost their singer/guitarist to drugs in the 90s and came underfire from his estate when they made an attempt to resurrect the band with a replacement.

Answer: Sublime

Sublime frontman Brad Nowell died from a drug overdose in 1996. Afterwards, drummer Bud Gaugh and bassist Eric Wilson played together in the Long Beach Dub All Stars for a few years before reforming Sublime with an unknown guitarist/singer named Rome Ramirez.

After playing a festival in 2009, Sublime was court-ordered to cease using the name Sublime for touring purposes. Brad Nowell owned the rights to the name Sublime, but Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson never asked for permission from the Nowell estate. By mutual agreement, the band continued under the altered name Sublime With Rome.
5. This instrumental trio finds members of Billy Idol's band, King Crimson, and Missing Persons playing mind-blowing music.

Answer: Black Light Syndrome

Black Light Syndrome consisted of Billy Idol band member Steve Stevens on guitar, King Crimson/Stickmen member Tony Levin on bass/Chapman Stick, and Missing Persons/U.K. drummer Terry Bozzio. They had two releases in 1997 and 2000.
6. This Ontario, Canada band carried on after the loss of their singer in 1988 with the drummer taking over most of the vocal duties when they returned to the stage in 1992. In 1993, this group split, but reunited in 2008.

Answer: Triumph

Triumph formed in 1975 with Rik Emmett on guitar and vocals, Mike Levine on bass/keyboards ad Gil Moore on drums and vocals.
7. This German group was mostly known as a trio, with the one constant member being Florian Fricke.

Answer: Popol Vuh

8. This Japanese all-girl group started in 1981 and put out releases with names like "Rock Animals" and "Candy Rock".

Answer: Shonen Knife

9. This instrumental piano-bass-drums trio from Minnesota that formed in 2000 can be said to be either a rock band playing jazz or a jazz band playing rock.

Answer: The Bad Plus

The band is unique in covering material ranging from David Bowie to Rush to Blondie as well as their own compositions.
10. Ex-members of The Nice, Atomic Rooster, and King Crimson made up this instantly successful group when they debuted.

Answer: Emerson, Lake and Palmer

Keyboardist Keith Emerson and singer/bassist/guitarist Greg Lake first met in 1969 while still members of The Nice and King Crimson finding they shared common interests in music. An early attempt to recruit The Jimi Hendrix Experience's Mitch Mitchell on drums proved futile before finding Carl Palmer.
