Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who covered the 1967 Motown hit "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and took it to the top of the charts in the fall of 1970?

Answer: Diana Ross

The Diana Ross version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" made it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the fall of 1970 for a three week stay, and was a cover of the original 1967 version done by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. They had taken the song into the Top 20, but Ross' version was the one to make it to the top.

It was written by the aforementioned team of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson.
2. "I was born in the wagon of a traveling show..." begins this classic hit by Cher. What 1971 song was this?

Answer: Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves

"Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves" was Cher's first major hit of the 1970s spending two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the U.S. in the fall of 1971. It also reached number one in Canada and had Top 10 status in Australia, Ireland and the U.K.

The song was off an album of the same name and was Cher's first Top 10 hit since "You Better Sit Down Kids" four years earlier. The song is a description of the life of a young girl born to a band of gypsys and the things she saw growing up as well as the fact that she had gotten pregnant by one of the band, who then disappeared.
3. This crossover tune was a hit for country music artist Mac Davis in 1972 and gave him a hook onto the pop charts. Can you name it?

Answer: Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me

Mac Davis was a country music artist who enjoyed his best success with the cross over tune "Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me" which spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the fall of 1972. Oddly, the song only could muster a number 26 placing on the Country charts at that time.

In fact, Davis never scored a number one tune on the Country charts, in a musical career that spanned well into the 1980s. Davis also had major roles in two motion pictures, "North Dallas Forty" in 1979, and "The Sting II" in 1983.
4. A song with some sexually suggestive lyrics gave Marvin Gaye a number one hit single in 1973. Can you name it?

Answer: Let's Get It On

"Let's Get It On" was the correct title of the 1973 Gaye hit that branded him as a smooth sexy singer in 1973. It spent two non-consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard charts in September of that year. The term 'get it on' was a term used for having sexual relations during that time. Gaye's song lyrics couldn't be more explicit.
5. After three years away, this Canadian singer scored with "Sundown" in 1974. Who is he?

Answer: Gordon Lightfoot

Although all the listed artists were Canadian musicians of note, it was Gordon Lightfoot who took "Sundown" to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Lightfoot had reached Top 5 status in the U.S. with "If You Could Read My Mind" and although he was successful in Canada during the early 1970s, he did not have another U.S. Top 40 hit until "Sundown" reached the top for a one week stay in the summer of 1974.
6. This song, originally done by Jerry Butler, was retitled, covered and became a hit for Tony Orlando and Dawn in 1975. What's the song?

Answer: He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)

"He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)" is a cover of the Jerry Butler hit "He Will Break Your Heart" a number seven Billboard charting hit in 1960. Orlando wanted to cover the tune and requested permission from co-writer Curtis Mayfield to cover the song, but change the title.

He agreed and the song was a number one hit for Tony Orlando and Dawn, spending three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1975.
7. Who sang the number one tune "Kiss and Say Goodbye" in 1976?

Answer: The Manhattans

"Kiss and Say Goodbye" was the number one hit for The Manhattans that spent two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the summer of 1976. Although successful on the R&B circuit, this was there best selling single on the Pop charts.
8. Stevie Wonder had a number one tune in 1977 with a song that was written as a tribute to a jazz legend. What was the name of the song?

Answer: Sir Duke

Stevie Wonder penned "Sir Duke", a tribute to the late Duke Ellington, the legendary jazz musician. Wonder's composition along with his recording, spent three weeks at the number one position on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 1977.

It also got as high as number two in the U.K. The lyrics also include the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and Louis Armstrong.
9. Anne Murray scored a number one with this 1978 tune. In other words "I Was Required By You".

Answer: You Needed Me

"You Needed Me" was the Anne Murray title need here. The song was written by Randy Goodrum, a writer that would go on to have some success in the 1989s writing for acts like Chicago, Steve Perry, and DeBarge. Murray's tune here spent a week at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the fall of 1978.

Interestingly, the song did not reached the top of the country charts, where Murray had made a name for herself in the mid and late 1970s.
10. 1972 saw Michael Jackson hit the top of the charts with "Ben", however he had a seven year hiatus after that until this song topped the charts in 1979. Don't stop thinking until you come up with the answer.

Answer: Don't Stop Till You Get Enough

"Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" broke Jackson's seven year dry spell when it managed to hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for a week in the fall of 1979. It was a cut from the album called "Off the Wall", and was written by Jackson himself. The song also made it as high as number three in the U.K.
