Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You say we've got nothing in common" begins this one hit wonder's group led by brothers Todd and Toby Pipes. Evoking a resurgence in popularity for Audrey Hepburn at the same time with their song "Breakfast at Tiffany's", what group saw their success wane quickly after their only hit?

Answer: Deep Blue Something

Deep Blue Something released "Breakfast at Tiffany's" in 1995, and it described a relationship on the rocks as the pair had "nothing in common", until he suggests the Audrey Hepburn movie that they both have a fondness for. Whether that is a factoid that can keep a relationship going or not depends on your point of view.

The song had chart success but not much critical reception; some have put the song on all-time bad song lists.
2. "I get knocked down but I get up again" begins this one hit wonder song from 1997. Seeing more success in the UK, most people only know this song in North America, and likely couldn't tell you the title; they know the song as the aforementioned lyric. What group gave this earworm to us, actually titled "Tubthumping"?

Answer: Chumbawumba

Chumbawumba's history goes all the way back to 1982, when they formed as an anarchist UK punk group playing anywhere they could find. With some minor success in their home of Great Britain prior to this song, Chumbawumba's irreverent anti-mainstream beliefs had them push back on the success of the song and they resisted the music promotional shows. Regardless, the song reached Number One is multiple countries.

But beyond that, the group didn't gain, or search for, continuing chart success.
3. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is Mambo No. 5." This artist made it clear the title of this song from the start. Finding some continued success in his native Germany, he never approached the success of "Mambo No. 5" achieved in 1999. What was the name of the artist?

Answer: Lou Bega

Lou Bega ended up in court with the estate of Perez Prado who originally performed "Mambo No. 5" in the 1940s. But it was an instrumental, and Bega had only used short riffs in his remake and wrote all original lyrics. German law allows this, and after a long court battle, Bega won the case.
4. "If God had a name what would it be?" begins an existential musical question from 1995 titled "One Of Us". Finding the Number spot in three countries, her second single failed to make the Top 40 in most countries, and her run of A-list fame was done. Who is the artist who performed "One Of Us"?

Answer: Joan Osborne

In an era when many women solo artists were having single hits they wrote and sang, Joan Osborne actually didn't write "One Of Us". Eric Bazilian of The Hooters authored the song, and recorded it for a project he was involved in, but he passed it on to Osborne during a recording session, and the song became a big hit with her.
5. "I know what you're doing, I see it all too clear" begins another one hit wonder from 1996. "Barely Breathing" is a break-up song that earned the artist a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance. His career would continue past this song, just in a different musical field. Who is this artist?

Answer: Duncan Sheik

Duncan Sheik also got some exposure with a song featured on the NBC medical drama "ER" called "Reasons For Living". But his attention went to theater later, writing much of the music for a Broadway show called "Spring Awakening". He won multiple Tony Awards from this production, a show that introduced the world to the talent of both Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele.
6. "I hate the world today" sums up much of the antisocial music of the 1990s, but this song actually became the woman's anthem of 1997. Subtitled "Nothing In Between", it found the Top Ten in ten different countries letting everyone know that the singer is numerous things, including a child, a sinner, a saint, and other entities. What artist is this?

Answer: Meredith Brooks

Meredith Brooks' song (actually titled "Bitch") pushed some censorship lines, but considering the level of success and countless phone-in requests she had with it, not many stations were refusing to play it. Brooks earned Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song Grammy nominations for the song, her first solo hit at the age of 39. But sadly her last major solo hit.
7. "Go on and close the curtains, cause all we need is candlelight," begins a song from a male artist in a family of one hit wonders, after his sister reached her status with the 1989 sing "Buffalo Stance". His song, "Save Tonight" had success all over the world, including his home country of Sweden. What artist is this?

Answer: Eagle-Eye Cherry

Eagle-Eye Cherry was born into a musical family; his father is jazz artist Don Cherry. After leaving Sweden he studied acting alongside Jennifer Aniston and Chaz Bono early in life, but moved to music later. "Save Tonight" would be the start of a little chart success mainly in Europe, but Cherry would not reach the same success as his debut song.
8. "I know it's up for me (if you steal my sunshine)" begins this next infectious tune from 1999. Sampling (not stealing) a segment from the 1970s disco hit "More More More" by Andrea True Connection, it found the Top Ten in multiple countries, and then in most of those countries they vanished. What artist brought us "Steal My Sunshine"?

Answer: Len

Siblings Marc and Sharon Costanzo formed Len in 1991, as a punk band, and switched to pop music with their 1999 album 'You Can't Stop the Bum Rush". Gregg Diamond was the author of "More More More", and he got partial credit for Len's song. He was unable to see a revival of his song, he passed away three months before the album was released.
9. "Yo listen up, here's the story about a little guy that lives in a blue world" represents a monster international hit in 1998. "Blue" made the Number One spot in twelve countries and the Top Ten on twelve YEAR-END charts across the world. But save some European short term success, they didn't have the legs for a long term career. Who is the artist that brought us "Blue (Da Ba Dee)"?

Answer: Eiffel 65

"Blue" was another 1990s song that people couldn't get out of their heads if they tried. Not pleasantly reviewed by American pundits, USA was about the only country where it didn't make the Number One spot. But everywhere else it exploded. Its followup, "Move Your Body", saw success especially in Eiffel 65's home country of Italy, but that song wasn't even released in the U.S.
10. "She's blood, flesh and bone, no tucks or silicone" begins this song of the faraway crush so many of us have had at some point in our lives. "She's So High" found the international charts in 1998, but this artist would not dent the charts much more than that, with the exception of his home country of Canada. What artist wrote and performed "She's So High"?

Answer: Tal Bachman

Tal Bachman was the son of Bachman Turner Overdrive frontman Randy Bachman. Soon after Tal's short lived music career, he moved to a career in political science media, as he had a Poli-Sci college degree.
