Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which era was Darrell Abbott credited on albums as "Diamond Darrell"?

Answer: Both

Darrell Abbott or best known as Dimebag Darell, was the guitarist of Pantera. He and his brother, Vinne Paul were the funders of Pantera. He was credited under this name from their debute album "Metal Magic", until their seventh album, the 1994 "Far Beyond Driven". That was the first album where he was mentioned as Dimebag Darrell.
2. Which era has the song "Die Young"?

Answer: Neither

Pantera never made a song called "Die Young". "Die Young" was a Black Sabbath song off of their ninth album and the first to feature Ronnie James Dio on vocals, instead of Ozzy Osbourne, "Heaven and Hell".
3. Which era has albums which had front covers feature a picture of the band members?

Answer: Both

Both era has albums with the members on the front cover. The first album cover like this was their second album, the 1984 "Project in the Jungle". This album was one of the three albums which had Terry Glaze on vocals. Dimebag Darrell was only seventeen during the recording of the album.

The second album with the members on the cover art was "Power Metal", which was the first album to feature Phil Anselmo on vocals. It was released in 1988 and the cover art was a picture of the members.

The third and last album featuring the members on the cover art was one of their most famous albums, the 1990 "Cowboys from Hell". The cover art features pictures of the band members in a pub.
4. Pantera performed on the "Monsters of Rock" festival.

Answer: Groove era

They performed on "Monsters of Rock" in 1991, in Moscow and in 1992, in Italy. This show was one of Pantera's first big gigs. They performed the songs "Hollow", "Domination", "Mouth for War", "Rise", "This Love" and "Cowboys from Hell".
5. Which era had a song with the lyrics "My soul was spawned from hell, my body coiled steel"?

Answer: Glam era

These lyrics are from the title track of the 1988 album, "Power Metal". This was the first album to feature Phil H. Anselmo on vocals. The song is about being a metalhead and listening to metal. This album was the last album which was produced and mixed by the father of Dimebag and Vinnie, Jerry Abott.

This and the previous three albums are often mislabeled as glam metal albums, which is not really true. They are much more like heavy or thrash metal.
6. During which era did Dimebag Darrell played guitar as a guest on a King Diamond song?

Answer: Groove era

He played the solo on the title track of King Diamond's eighth studio album, "Voodoo", which was released in 1998. The album is a concept album and it tells a story of the Lafayette family, who move to an old house on the Missisippi river, built next to a voodoo graveyard.
7. During which era was Dimebag Darrell shot onstage?

Answer: Neither

Dimebag Darrell was shot onstage by a crazy fan, Nathan Gale in 2004. He ran onto the stage shot Dimebag a couple times. Gale also shot fans and he would have killed the rest of the band if policeman James Niggemeyer hadn't shot him to disable him.

Pantera split up in 2001 and the Abbott brothers formed their new band, Damageplan. They could release only one album called "New Found Power". Dimebag was buried in the Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington, Texas.
8. During which era was Dimebag Darrell asked to join Megadeth?

Answer: Glam era

Dave Mustaine asked him to join them in 1988. He heard of Pantera from Dave Ellefson's (Megadeth's bassist) girlfriend, who was a friend of the members of Pantera.

Dave Mustaine asked Dimebag to join them as a guitarist, but he said he agreed only if he can bring his brother, Vinnie Paul to be the drummer. Dave Mustaine rejected it because he has already hired Nick Menza as a drummer.

"I actually called him up and asked him to play in Megadeth," Mustaine told the Tampa Bay Times in a 2019 interview. "Fate would have completely changed if I would have called him before I called Nick Menza. I said, "Hey, Darrell, I'm looking for a guitar player." And he goes, "Can I bring my brother?" And I went, "Who's your brother?" He goes, "Vinnie Paul! Don't you know Vinnie Paul?"
9. Which era's album has the redesigned cover art which features the band's name and the album's title on a steel plate?

Answer: Groove era

This design is the cover art of Pantera's last studio album, "Reinventing the Steel", which was remastered and redesigned for its 20th anniversary, in 2020.

After the end of the supporting tour of this album, Pantera has split up, due to conflicts among the members. In 2004, Dimebag Darrell got murdered on stage and in 2018, Vinnie Paul has passed away too, so unfortunately, Pantera will never reunite.
10. Which era has album covers featuring an animal?

Answer: Both

The front cover of Pantera's debut album, "Metal Magic" features a tiger or a panther, holding a sword in its hand. It was released in 1983 and Dimebag Darell was only sixteen years old at the recording of the album.

The other Pantera album cover with an animal on it is the 1996 "The Great Southern Trendkill". It was Pantera's eighth studio album and features a snake on the cover.
