For my 20th quiz, I have decided on a music quiz about bands that have replaced at some time their lead singer for various reasons. I hope you enjoy playing it and possibly learn a bit about each band.

1. When Bon Scott passed away in in 1980, who took over as lead singer for AC/DC?

Answer: Brian Johnson

When Bon Scott died in 1980 - after a night of heavy drinking - he was recording what was to become AC/DC's biggest selling album, "Back in Black".

With initial thoughts about quitting, the remaining band members decided to continue, recruiting a new lead singer. Eventually they chose Brian Johnson, the lead singer of a band called Geordie. Ironical before his death Bon Scott had mentioned seeing Johnson perform with Geordie, likening it Johnson to Little Richard, a singer Scott admired.
2. After Peter Gabriel left Genesis, which band member took over as lead singer?

Answer: Phil Collins

After quitting the Genesis in 1975, the band began a search for a replacement for former lead singer Peter Gabriel - one of the founding members of Genesis.

Having already recorded backing vocal for the "Trick of the Tail" album, Phil Collins - then the drummer for Genesis- reluctantly took over as lead singer after going into the studio to record vocals for the album track "Squonk".

Collins himself was replaced temporarily with ex-Stiltskin lead singer, Ray Wilson on the "Calling All Stations" album.
3. After former Joy Division lead singer, Ian Curtis committed suicide, what did the band change its name to?

Answer: New Order

Having made a pact that the band would change its name should one of the members leave when Curtis was alive, the band was rocked when Curtis committed suicide, just become the release of their second album, "Closer".

Initially carrying on as a three-piece band for the promotion of the album, they eventually recruited Gillian Gilbert, the girlfriend of drummer Stephen Morris, and changed their name to New Order, reportedly suggested from a newspaper article on Cambodia by their manager, Rob Gretton.

Although continuing playing in the same, dark, melodic style, New Order (as the band was know known as) eventually became known for new wave, electronic dance music.
4. When former lead singer, Syd Barrett's mental health began to deteriorate, who replaced him in Pink Floyd?

Answer: David Gilmour

With a combination of alleged drug taking, and deteriorating health, fellow band members Waters, Wright and Mason decided to bring into the band David Gilmour - someone Barrett and Waters had known since their days growing up in Cambridge.

By default, Gilmour took over Barrett's duties in the band as lead guitarist, when Barrett's position became untenable, after Barrett failed to show up for a gig. Gilmour's first main recording contribution to Pink Floyd came on the album "A Saucerful of Secrets"
5. When Fish quit Marillion in 1988, who was drafted in as a replacement lead singer?

Answer: Steve Hogarth

When Fish (real name Derek William Dick) realised his health was at stake from having to tour so much whilst the band's manager to a high cut of earning, he gave his fellow band members a choice between him and their manager. The band though decided to stick with their manager.

Having been a part of the group, The Europeans, Steve Hogarth had quit along with another band member when long-term friend suggest he send Marillion a demo tape after Hogarth's new band flopped.

Reluctant to start with, Hogarth's first audition came at the home of Marillion band member, Peter Trawavas. When the rest of the band heard Hogarth's voice, they decided that he was an ideal replacement for Fish. Hogarth though was reluctant to join, already having an offer to joining, The The on tour. Hogarth though chose Marillion, making his debut on the album "Seasons End".
6. When lead singer Richey Edwards vanished, who took over as lead singer for Welsh band, Manic Street Preachers?

Answer: James Dean Bradfield

When lead singer and guitarist, Richey Edwards vanished, the remaining member of the Manic Street Preachers were on the point of deciding to quit, however with support for Edwards' family the decided to continue as a three piece band, with guitarist James Dean Bradfield taking over as lead singer.

Their first album together was entitled "Everything Must Go", which contained some songs written by Edwards, along with band member Nicky Wire who wrote most of the lyrics.
7. British heavy metal band, Deep Purple has over the years gone through a number of changes of band members. Who though has NOT been a lead singer for the band since their formation?

Answer: Paul Rodgers

Despite having gone through a number of changes in band members, Deep Purple has had four lead singers, with Ian Gillan and David Coverdale being the best known. Rod Evans sang lead vocals in the early years of the band before being replaced with Gillan, whilst Joe Lynn Turner took over during the late 1980s to early 1990s.

Other famous band members of Deep Purple include guitarist Richie Blackmore (who later founded Rainbow), Ian Paice, Jon Lord and Joe Satriani.
8. Fleetwood Mac is another band that has had numerous changes in lead singer, but which lead singer left first?

Answer: Peter Green

Along with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, Peter Green founded (along with Jeremy Spencer and Bob Brunning) in 1967. After some early success, Peter Green's deteriorating mental health jeopardised the bands future and he was asked to leave.

Christine McVie (wife of John McVie) joined the band in 1970
Lindsey Buckingham joined the band in 1974 along with his then girlfriend Stevie Nicks.

After the departure of Buckingham in 1987, Billy Burnette and Rick Vito were drafted in as replacements, sharing lead the role of lead singer with Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie. The first album recorded with this line up was "Behind the Mask". Buckingham though did play acoustic guitar on this albums title track.

Since then both Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie have left Fleetwood Mac and come back at some point along with Lindsey Buckingham.

Having decided to lead Rainbow (the band Richie Blackmore had founded after leaving Deep Purple), Ronnie James Dio joined Black Sabbath for a couple of years, until conflicts arose during the recording of the "Live Evil" album. This only came to light with the album's sound engineer began to complain the Dio was re-mixing the tracks on the album behind his back.

Dio left the band to form his own group called Dio, however in 1992 he briefly returned to Black Sabbath to record the "Dehumanizer" album.
10. In 2004, Brian May and Roger Taylor announced they were reforming Queen. Who did they bring in as lead singer?

Answer: Paul Rodgers

With the death of the iconic Freddie Mercury in 1991, Queen decided to carry on. However they were more focused on releasing tracks that were either demos or uncompleted during the time Freddie was alive along with various collaborations. Brian May, John Taylor and John Deacon though did return to the studio as Queen to record a tribute song to Freddie in 1997 entitled "No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young)".

In 2004 May and Taylor announced they were reforming Queen - minus Deacon who had decided to retire, and recruited former Bad Company and Free singer Paul Rodgers. This line up was promoted as Queen + Paul Rodgers, which embarked on a tour. In addition, they recorded an album together called "The Cosmos Rocks".

Rodgers left the band in 2009, stating he felt it was only every meant to be a temporary arrangement, but did not rule out working with May and Taylor again.

In 2012 May and Taylor were briefly joined by "American Idol" runner-up, Adam Lambert for a number of concerts, whilst May and Taylor have worked on releasing lost demos and unreleased songs featuring Freddie Mercury
