Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what town/city was the rock group, Deep Purple, formed?

Answer: Hertford, England

Deep Purple began their career in 1968 in Hertford, England. They were once considered to be the world's loudest rock group. During their career, they have sold over one hundred million albums. Although their line-up has changed several times over the years, they are most famous for the members that included: Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord and Ian Paice.
2. Which well-known Deep Purple tune came about as a result of someone firing a flare gun into the ceiling of the casino where the band was supposed to record an album?

Answer: Smoke On The Water

In December 1971, Deep Purple was in Montreux, Switzerland to record their huge best-selling album "Machine Head". They were going to use the Rolling Stones' mobile studio and record it at the casino in Montreux. The partying got too much and as the song says, "some stupid with a flare gun, burned the place to the ground". From that incident came their most popular song ever, "Smoke On The Water".
3. Outstanding guitarist, Stevie Ray Vaughan, did a special tour with Deep Purple from 1993-1994.

Answer: False

The outstanding guitarist that did the tour was none other than Joe Satriani, who did the "Deep Purple and Joe Satriani Tour" from 1993-1994. It would turn out to be Joe's only stint with the band.
4. Which song from their "Machine Head" album has the lyrical line "we danced around the Borealis"?

Answer: Space Truckin'

From the hard-driving song "Space Truckin'" we heard;
"Well, we had a lot of luck on Venus
We always have a ball on Mars
We're meeting all the groovy people
We've rocked the Milky Way so far
We danced around the borealis
We're space truckin' 'round the stars"

"Space Truckin'" is the seventh and final cut from Deep Purple's original vinyl cover of "Machine Head".
5. Deep Purple has its own online newspaper for fans of the band. What do they call it?

Answer: The Highway Star

Probably only the real diehard fans would know this, but the band has a monthly newspaper online called "The Highway Star", named after their song "Highway Star". Interestingly, it is chock full of articles, news, songwriting suggestions and other musical info about the band's going-ons as they are still touring over forty years after their inception.
6. Deep Purple's album, "Purpendicular", included all the original artists, save one. Which member quit the band for the "umpteenth" time before they could get the project off the ground?

Answer: Ritchie Blackmore

The band members agree that Blackmore, a very skilled and capable guitarist, was no longer being an important contributor to Deep Purple, so none of the other members were too upset when Blackmore finally quit for good. Another very good guitarist, Steve Morse, was recruited by the group and filled in Blackmore's place very well.
*Nick Simper and Rod Evans were also original members, but unlike Blackmore, they did not rejoin the band several times and quit again as Blackmore did, so for the sake of this quiz, the question will be left as is.
7. Russia's president, Dmitry Medvedev, has always been a huge Deep Purple fan and in 2011 invited them to his home for dinner and a musical jam.

Answer: True

True. Medvedev admitted that this type of meeting would have been impossible when Deep Purple first began, due to the political climate of the times. Before going to their concert appointment in Moscow, the band took time to have a jam session with Medvedev's fifteen-year-old son who joined them on his electric guitar.
8. What was the name of Deep Purple's first recorded album after the band's inception in 1968?

Answer: Shades of Deep Purple

September 1968 saw the original members begin the band's successful career with the album "Shades of Deep Purple". It was followed up in December 1968 by "The Book of Taliesyn". Since 1968, Deep Purple has recorded over 20 best-selling records.
9. In 1974, Deep Purple's success saw them draw approximately how many fans at their California Jam Festival?

Answer: 250,000

They had become successful to a point where they were able to draw two hundred and fifty thousand plus to an open air concert at the California Jam Festival, which took place on April 6, 1974, at the Ontario Speedway. They were promoting their "Burn" album release and co-headlined with Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Strangely enough, this was the band's biggest crowd ever and it came at a time where the band was in disarray and had some of the original members packing up for greener musical pastures.
10. Out of all of Deep Purple's group members, which musician has had the most years experience with the band?

Answer: Ian Paice

Ian Paice, with an incredible thirty-five years, is Deep Purple's longest serving member. Bassist Roger Glover has thirty-one years of membership, vocalist Ian Gillan comes in third with twenty-nine years experience, while keyboardist extraordinaire, Jon Lord, played for twenty-seven years. That adds up to an incredible one hundred and twenty-two years among the four longest serving Deep Purple musicians.
