Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What soul singer, also known as "The Mad Man from Macon" and "The King of Soul," originally wrote "Respect"?

Answer: Otis Redding

At the age of two, Otis Redding moved to Macon, Georgia, and at 15, he dropped out of school to support his family as part of Little Richard's backing band. His first album, "Pain in My Heart," was released in 1964. "Respect" was included on his third studio album "Otis Blue" and was released in 1965 as a single with "Ole Man Trouble" on the B-Side.

A cross-over hit, the song leaped from the Billboard's Black Singles Chart (where it hit the top five) to the white audience of pop radio.
2. Whose modified version of "Respect" became her signature song and was named the fifth "greatest song of all time" by Rolling Stone magazine in 2004, and the number one greatest song in the magazine's updated 2021 list?

Answer: Aretha Franklin's

Aretha Franklin recorded her version of "Respect" at Atlantic's New York studio on Valentine's Day in 1967. It was released as a single from her eleventh studio album "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You." The song became her first number one hit, and it remained at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for twelve weeks.
3. The original version of "Respect" does not have the "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" chorus.

Answer: True

Otis Redding initially wrote the song as a slow ballad for Speedo Sims, but when Speedo Sims was unable to produce a good version of it, Redding sped up the rhythm, rewrote the lyrics, and recorded it himself. His version did not contain the R-E-S-P-E-C-T chorus. That was added in the Aretha Franklin version. She also added the "sock it to me" chorus.

Otis Redding sang:

"Respect is what I need
Got to, got to have it...
Give it, give it to me, baby, everything I need
Give it to me, baby, everything I want
Give it to me, baby."

Aretha Franklin, on the other hand, sang:

"R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Find out what it means to me
R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Take care, TCB
Oh (sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me)."

Aretha Franklin's backup singers on this chorus were her sisters Carolyn and Erma. "The late Tom Dowd," reports Rolling Stone magazine, "who engineered the date, credited Carolyn with the saucy breakdown in which Aretha spelled out the title."
4. Diana Ross and the Supremes joined what bestselling, all-male Motown group in a live performance of "Respect" on the 1968 Mowtown television special "TCB"?

Answer: The Temptations

The two groups were promoting their joint 1968 album "Diana Ross & the Supremes Join the Temptations." The two groups performed Aretha Franklin's version of the song as a male versus female duet. Their version of the song reached number two on the U.S. Billboard 200.
5. Who recorded a cover of "Respect" in her kind of country style on her self-titled 1988 album?

Answer: Reba McEntire

"My Kind of Country" was Reba McEntire's eighth studio album. The self-titled "Reba" was her fifteenth studio album. The album peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums. On that album, she covered the Otis Redding version of the song and also performed it live at the Country Music Awards that year.
6. In 2012, Melanie Amara recorded a version of "Respect" alongside Elton John for the joy of what soda?

Answer: Pepsi

The "Joy of Pepsi" was one of Pepsi's many advertising slogans back in 1999. In 2012, however, the advertisers were using the slogan, "Where there's Pepsi, there's music." Melanie Amaro's version of the song was uptempo. Being able to record it with Elton John was part of her prize for having won the first season of the reality competition show "The X Factor" in the United States.
7. "What you want, ____, you got it / And what you need, ____, you got it." What endearments are missing from these blanks?

Answer: honey, baby

"What you want, honey, you got it
And what you need, baby, you got it
All I'm askin' is for a little respect when I come home
Hey now, hey hey hey, yeah now."

Rolling Stone magazine wrote that "Aretha Franklin took possession of the song for all time with her definitive cover." Redding's version, the magazine said, was "a brawny march" that "called for equal favor with volcanic force. Franklin wasn't asking for anything. She sang from higher ground: a woman calling an end to the exhaustion and sacrifice of a raw deal with scorching sexual authority. In short, if you want some, you will earn it."
8. "Do me ____, honey, if you wanna / You can do me ____, honey, while I'm gone." What word is missing from the blank?

Answer: wrong

"Do me wrong, honey, if you wanna
You can do me wrong, honey, while I'm gone
But all I'm askin' is for a little respect when I come home
Ooh yeah now, hey hey hey, yeah now."

"There is no mistaking the passion inside the discipline of Franklin's delivery," writes Rolling Stone magazine of Aretha Franklin's version in its "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" article, "she was surely drawing on her own tumultuous marriage at the time for inspiration."

Kelly Clarkson covered Franklin's version of the song for "American Idol" in 2002.
9. "Hey, little girl, you're so sweeter than honey / And I'm about to just give you all my ____." What's the singer about to give her?

Answer: money

"But all I'm askin', hey
Is a little respect when I get home
Hey hey, hey hey hey, yeah now."

Aretha Franklin omits the "Hey, little girl" line. She sings:

"Ooh, your kisses
Sweeter than honey
And guess what?
So is my money..."

Franklin's version of "Respect" has been covered by numerous musicians over the decades, including Adeva (1989), Ramsey Lewis (1967), Norma Frazer (1968), Joy Flemming (1975), and Leo (2015).
10. What soul singer saw fit to cover "Respect" on his seventh studio album?

Answer: Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder covered the Otis Redding version on "I Was Made to Love Her," which was released in 1967 by a Motown subsidiary called Tamla Records. Born Stevland Hardaway Morris, Stevie Wonder had his first number one hit when he was just twelve years old, in 1963, with a song called "Fingertips."
