Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'See the curtains hangin' in the window in the evenin' on a Friday night' is the first line of which song?

Answer: Summer Breeze

This song was written and recorded by Seals and Croft in 1972. It was later memorably covered by The Isley Brothers in 1974 who used their harmonies to great effect and made it into a soulful classic. Interestingly, the guitar solo on the record was performed by the youngest Isley brother, Ernie.
2. Who first recorded 'Summertime Blues'?

Answer: Eddie Cochran

Eddie Cochran recorded this song at the tender age of nineteen and helped to create his image of a rebel equipped with a guitar, singing about the trials of teenage life. The song was later recorded by many other artists, including The Who and even Olivia Newton-John.
3. 'Summer's almost gone' appears on which album by The Doors?

Answer: Waiting for the Sun

This features on the Doors' third album and is one of my favourite 'summer' songs. It contains the rather beautiful and wistful lyric: 'Morning found us calmly unaware, Moon burn gold unto our hair'.
4. 'Summertime' appears in which opera?

Answer: Porgy and Bess

The song was composed by George Gershwin in 1933 and is performed throughout the opera. It has been covered by numerous artists, including Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Janis Joplin and The Zombies.
5. How long did the John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John classic, 'Summer Nights', stay at number one in the UK charts in 1978?

Answer: seven weeks

The summer of 1978 was all about Grease! 'You're the one that I want' also topped the charts for a massive nine weeks and became the UK's best selling single for that year.
6. In which film did the Bananarama Song, 'Cruel Summer', first appear?

Answer: The Karate Kid

This was the trio's first hit in the USA although it was not included on the film's soundtrack. The song can be heard, however, on the soundtrack to the film 'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion', starring Lisa Kudrow.
7. Who wrote the Mungo Jerry hit, 'In the Summertime'?

Answer: Ray Dorset

The song was written by the lead singer of Mungo Jerry in 1970. It is one of the best selling records of all time and has featured in numerous advertisements. It was later revamped by Shaggy in the 1990s.
8. Whose names appear in the song 'Summer of '69' by Bryan Adams?

Answer: Jimmy and Jody

'Jimmy quit and Jody got married' is the actual line from the song. 'Jimmy' supposedly refers to Jim Wesledy who played drums for Bryan in the early 1980s whilst 'Jody' is Jody Perpick, Bryan's Tour Manager and Sound Engineer.
9. 'Summertime' by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince samples which 'summer' song?

Answer: 'Summer Madness' by Kool and the Gang

The song was awarded a Grammy in the 1988 and featured on the duo's fourth album, 'Homebase'. Will Smith, the Fresh Prince, is better known for his acting exploits than his singing career.
10. Who recorded 'Long Hot Summer' in 2005?

Answer: Girls Aloud

The song was not one of the band's biggest hits although it still made the top ten in the UK. The single was taken from the album 'Chemistry' and the saucy video features the girls dressed in overalls 'cooling down' in a garage.
