Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song that topped the Billboard charts in 1979 inspired Al to make his first parody?

Answer: My Sharona

Originally, Al could not do a studio recording of this song, so he recorded it in the bathroom across from the studio. A remake of "My Bologna" was made for Al's 1983 debut album. The original recording of "My Bologna" can be found on Al's "Permanent Record" box set.
2. Al's second song was a parody of what Queen song?

Answer: Another One Bites the Dust

"Another One Rides the Bus" is one of Dr. Demento's favorite songs that Weird Al did. Al performed this song on National TV in 1981 along with John Bermuda Schwartz banging on Al's accordion case. There was never a remake of this song.
3. In 1983, Al released a song about "I Love Lucy". What was the song a parody of?

Answer: Mickey

"Ricky", from Al's debut album, was Weird Al's debut music video. For this video, he shaved off his moustache and put on a wig in order to resemble Ricky Ricardo.
4. Weird Al's parody of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" is about what?

Answer: Ice Cream

"I Love Rocky Road" was the first song that Al did for the record company Scotti Bros.
5. In 1984, Weird Al turned "Beat It", from Michael Jackson's Blockbuster smash hit album, "Thriller", into the spoof, "Eat It". "Eat It" made Al a satricial superstar.

Answer: True

The music video for "Eat It" was almost exactly the same as the video for "Beat It". After the music video for "Eat It" came out, some people who saw Al in person called him The "Eat It" Guy.
6. Al's second album, "In 3D", had another famous parody. This parody was about what game show?

Answer: Jeopardy

"I Lost On Jeopardy" was a parody of "Jeopardy" by Greg Kihn. "The Price is Right" is also mentioned on this song; the lyric is "...next weekend on The Price Is Right.", and that lyric always annoyed me because "The Price is Right" has never been on a weekend! In the early 2000's, Al was a contestant on "Rock & Roll Jeopardy", and coincidently, he lost!
7. Is "Dare to Be Stupid" a parody on another song?

Answer: No

Although, "Dare to Be Stupid" (the title track from Al's 3rd album) is an original, the style of the song is spoofing the band, Devo.
8. What is the biggest US hit on Al's 1985 album, "Dare to Be Stupid"?

Answer: Like a Surgeon

"Like a Surgeon" is a parody on Madonna's "Like a Virgin", and it was actually Madonna's idea for Al to make this parody!
9. Also on Al's "Dare to Be Stupid" album, he made a parody on a song by Huey Lewis & the News. What was the song called?

Answer: I Want a New Duck

In 1987, The Disney Channel had a special about Donald Duck called "Down and Out with Donald Duck", and "I Want a New Duck" was the theme song to the special.
10. "One More Minute" is done in a style similar to what artist?

Answer: Elvis Presley

This original was Al's very first love song.
11. Before he released "The Saga Begins", what was Al's hit Star Wars song?

Answer: Yoda

And it's still really popular today.
12. Which original on Al's 1986 album, "Polka Party" is making fun of the style of the band, Talking Heads?

Answer: Dog Eat Dog

Al doesn't sing this song very often. Whenever he does, some people may think it's a brand new song.
13. On "Living with a Hernia", Al is not only parodying a song by James Brown, but he is also making fun of him from how he viewed Brown.

Answer: True

Whenever Al sees James Brown perform, it always looked to him like he was in some critical pain, and that inspired him to make the song and video to "Living with a Hernia".
14. Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" became "Addicted to..."

Answer: Spuds

"Polka Party" was Al's worst selling album. "Addicted to Spuds" was the most popular song on the album. Originally, there was going to be a music video to this song, but sadly, it was never released.
15. Which song is it where Al switches one language to another?

Answer: Lasagna

"La Bamba" was a Spanish song, but Al's parody on "La Bamba" is Italian all the way. (an appropriate choice for an accordian player)
16. On Al's 5th album, "Even Worse" (released in 1988), Al is once again making fun of Michael Jackson, but this time, he turned Jackson's "Bad" into one big __________ joke.

Answer: Fat

"Fat" is Al's only music video from "Even Worse". This song won a grammy for Best Concept Music and stands as Weird Al's #1 hit song of all time.
17. Weird Al never did a parody on a Beatles song, but did he do a parody on one of their solo songs?

Answer: Yes

"This Song's Just Six Words Long" from "Even Worse" is a parody of George Harrison's "Got My Mind Set On You". I do not think that Beatles fans will ever play this song since George's death in 2001.
18. This song from the "UHF" soundtrack has a music video, which is actually a segment from the movie.

Answer: Money for Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies

19. In 1989, Al made a parody on an R.E.M. song. The song was about food. What food?

Answer: Spam

It's a parody on "Stand", and both these songs came out well before R.E.M.'s ultimate hit, "Losing My Religion".
20. Are there two different versions to "UHF"?

Answer: Yes

The album version of "UHF" is a 5-minute song. The single version runs at 3:45. The single version of the song can be heard on the "Permanent Record" box set and "Greatest Hits Vol. 2". "The TV Album" has the album version.
